The RIP thread

Roebuck, the greatest cricket writer since Cardus, on Warne's Ball of the Century, first published in 2005:

Good morning, Mr Gatting. Good morning, England. My name is Warne and I bowl leg spin.
Had never read that. Brilliant. Roebuck was something else.

Not going to lie, shed tears when I heard about this. I watched him play his first test and thought how is this chubby bugger going to get another game, and I watched his last.

Not only the greatest cricketer I have witnessed in my lifetime but also the nicest bloke you could ever meet. Life is pretty shitty sometimes.

Rest in peace S.K Warne.

And so he was Mick, so he was.

The Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger called the Australian the “greatest spin bowler ever”

Four Aussie sporting Legends gone in one week.

Landy

Marsh

Warne

Woods How remiss of me to forget Dean Woods, one of our gretest ever cyclists.

RIP Gentlemen Thank You from the bottom of my heart.

Stunned and saddened.

The pressure for a sporting icon to be in shape must be immense. Warne passed away just 4 days into a new shredding phase of dieting after a history of yoyo dieting.

Losing weight quickly is something we celebrate. Maybe Warne's passing can lead to a positive addition to improve Australian culture - it becomes an Australian way of thinking to "get healthy... but take your time".

When it comes to dieting, "don't throw a fast ball, throw a smart one".

Cheers for sharing that. Great reminder how great a wordsmith Roebuck was.

Still incredibly flat about Warne.

The most charismatic and great sportsman of Leysy's lifetime.

Just on Rod Marsh, he was a Richmond supporter.

He told me so himself.

I was at the WACA ground in the late 80s for an Eagles Bulldogs night game. Yep pretty weird, but a teacher from my school had organised a student trip to go and had a spare ticket.

I think all the kids were Eagles fans, so I wore my Tigers gurnsey to be a smart arse.

Anyway, Rod Marsh at the time was working for Channel 9 but for some reason was doing a live cross from the WACA before the game. For another reason I will never understand, the crowd were giving it to him too.

Turns out our teacher knew Rod from their younger days and they were pretty good mates. So the next thing Rod has come up to our group and is chatting to the teacher. He then offers to get us a chance to go up and see inside the old scoreboard at WACA, which was right behind where we were sitting. While we are up there, he sees my Tigers gurnsey and we have a chat about it.

The upshot of the conversation was that he was a Tigers supporter too. At the time, he was the only other person in the state that I knew followed the Tigers!
Great story, Heath.

It's funny hearing stories like this.
People you wouldn't automatically associate being Tigers supporters being interstate or in other sports.
eg Ash being a Queenslander and Simon Katich from WA/NSW.
Just shows how broad Richmond's appeal is.

But getting back on topic.
RIP Tiger Bacchus.
RIP The Sheik of Tweak.
Still can't quite believe it.
