Dustin Martin

Hope the champ is ok.

Season appears to be unravelling fast….although the report doesn’t completely rule him out of playing this week.

Anyway, *smile* last few weeks for the club.

He's been through a fair bit lately, hopefully the break gives him the time to sort whatever it is that's troubling him out.

Sadly his life has been flipped on its head with his father's death.
Unrealistic to think it wasn't going to have a profound impact on the lad.
Irrelevant for what the media had reported since his Dads passing . He is finding it extremely hard . . Footy isn’t everything

When I moved from Melbourne to QLD, I lived and went to uni on the Gold Coast. I met a bloke who was captain of the U19s for Kedron Grange in the QAFL. We got talking footy. He was keen to get me to play for them as they were chasing players. It was over an hour drive to the club from wher I was living so I said I'm happy to play but I wouldn't be able to train. I wasn't very fit but I stood in the forward pocket for a few game and kicked a few sneaky goals (the standard wasnt great in the mid 90s in QAFL). I ended up pulling out as I knew that I was taking the *smile* with playing but not training and knew I didn't really have the respect from my teammates.

But Dusty is no BrisTiger24.....if he wants to just play and couldn't be arsed training to achieve his mental health goals.....go for your life Dusty!!!

Just watched Dimma's presser and he sounded quite emotional speaking about Dusty. I hope whatever it is, it is not too serious. Never in doubt with our great club, but I'm glad the club is giving him the space he needs.

Think the emotional toll is hitting him now. Some people are really good at blocking it out and compartmentalising it but sooner or later it catches up with you and you have to deal with it.

He just needs to do what is right for him.

Hopefully the boys lift. It's a real test of how much desire there still is in the group.

All the best to the champ.

Would not surprise me if he was to pull the pin shortly. As you said, he needs to do what's right for him and I reckon he's almost done with footy..

He owes us very little, if anything at all. Take all the time you need champ.

He hasn't been able to go to NZ since his dad passed, right? I believe the borders open soon (prior to easter form memory).

Nah i don’t think so. one of the reasons why he nearly went to Norf at the end of 2017 was because his career options post-footy were limited and he needed to make hay while the sun shines. I can see him playing on after his current contract expires.

I hope not, but I'm a little bit with you on this. I don't live in Melbourne but imagine his life down there would be pretty tiring at times.

It really comes down to how much he's banked since 2017 and what his financial advisors are like. Lets say he's earnt $1m per season from 2018 to 2022, thats $4m and add to that his earnings that he's making from his corporate sponsorships and endorsements, that could take that to $5m.

Sure he has to pay tax on that, but invested wisely, he could still easily end up being in a very strong financial position coming out of this.

I'd think his focus after footy, may still be on footy but maybe grass roots footy. I could easily envisage a Dustin Martin football academy being setup post footy.

If we have another poor season and look to rebuild, the questions Dusty will ask himself, would be, how does his career look post footy, how do his financials look and does he want to continue to play when wins are less likely and his focus is on developing the next group. I'm not sure he will. Could potentially take a similar decision to Barty, leave money on the table for the benefit of her long term physical and mental health.

Yep, sure does take time to break out. Hope Dusty does well and comes back strong.
