Pick 29: Shai Bolton

Played like a bloke whose been reading his own press last night. If he keeps this up, a stint in the 2s might be needed to put the ego back in check

It wasn't the kicking that was the issue. I haven’t seen the replay, so it may not have been as obvious on TV, but the issue was horrible decision making.

For at least 3 of his behinds, he has one or two team mates steaming forward ahead of the ball in easy handball position.

He's a genuine star, but played like he had to be the match winner.
I too havent seen the replay but at the ground he was electric. He was dancing around Port players like they were statues. Yes he burnt some team mates but in all sports the stars want to be the match winner.

How old is he - 23? Plenty of football yet before he reaches maturity as an AFL player.

For a guy with exquisite skills and talent his goal kicking is decidedly average. George is a better shot, both set shot and snapping. I'd prefer almost anyone else in our side with a set shot to Shai.

Add to it his petulance towards umpires and he's got a lot of growth to go.

Imagine if he can get those aspects out of his game, he'd be a Top 5 player in the game. Maybe Top 3. Maybe No.1?
As I said in my previous post he hasnt reached maturity in AFL terms. Still 2-3 years away from that.

Good call, hopefully it is happening.
I’d imagine Jack would always giving advice to the other forwards ;)

Must say I don’t like taking natural flair away from goal kicking forwards , Shai is unique in that though , kicks the impossible and misses too many easy ones , I’m sure that will improve though.

Dusty has never burnt teammates like Shai does. You can win matches without kicking the goal yourself. (unless you are dusty of course).

Firstly lets stop comparing Shai or any other footballer to Dusty.

His conversion rate remains worse than Castagna’s.

His finishing was woeful, he just didn't seem to be concentrating, or care, just seemed to throw a leg at the ball. Did some great plays to get shots, but the shots themselves were so bad. All of his shots, snaps, long on the run, close set shot, none were anywhere near it, and contrasted to many examples this season where his body language is good, he looks like he is applying himself and they sail through and are never in doubt.

His worst miss was when he could have run to the goal line and kicked it through, but chose to dribble it from 15m out and missed. He looked back too so should have known he was on his own.

Anyway, enough Shai bashing, he still slipped and wriggled his way out of contests like no other player can in the AFL, and as another poster said if he'd kicked a goal or two he'd be BOG.

You said all stars want to be the match winner. Yep, but match winners in team sports make the right calls at the right times. IMO there are question marks over Shai's selfishness both with the ball and without it. If it doesn't change he won't maximise his talent. I'm sure it will, he's still a young player and I'm syure he's got plenty of great mentors in the club. No one wants to eliminate his flair.

To me he could be another dusty, his clearance work and vision in the middle is amazing. And he loves a goal, he loves creating goals. He could be anythng, the No.1 player in the game if he wants to be. But he's gotta get the balance right.

Dusty should burn teammates more. He's a great finisher, and sometimes he's too unselfish and he ends up over egging the pudding.

Shai Bolton has all of the skill in the world but lacks the composure when the game is on the line. Forget about the sitter he missed going into an open goal. The game was over at that point. But that set shot from 25m out earlier in the quarter… I knew he was going to shank it. He’s 23, played 80 games and played in 2 premierships. You can’t excuse that.

I was criticised a month or so ago when I said Bolton is going to be too expensive to retain because the WA clubs will come knocking every time he’s out of contract. I stand by those words.

When he comes out of contract next year, other clubs might offer him close to a million on the open market. He’s not worth anywhere near that because he is not a clutch player. Of course, I do not want to lose him, but we shouldn’t sell the farm to keep him neither.

Honestly, I think Bolton is a bit overrated, but I don’t hold him on a pedestal as some other people do. He will never, ever be Dusty.

Yeah - not deserving of bashing but hopefully gets a message that he can’t afford to lairize

His set shot in the last quarter was an awful kick - but during a period where there were turnovers galore due to miskicks by players on both sides.
Slippery footy makes it hard at times I guess.

Just wasn't his night but not far from still being a good one.

Just lucky his misses especially the sitter didn't come back to bite us.

There is bad games when players can't get near the ball. Shai was still creative & gave us a spark.

Sadly I think that’s they way he’ll be. He’ll be brilliant in some games and stink it up in a few.
