Lots of non Tasmanians making assessments on whether Tasmanians will go to games in the winter. If they hadn't for the past 100 years then it wouldn't be a football state. People adapt to the climate they live in.

They’ve (the AFL) never lost a customer Jim. The tv ratings in TAS haven’t changed in years. And won’t if there’s no team there.

Maybe not yet, but it will happen. Not sure you understand the tipping point Australian Rules is at in Tasmania ATM.

How do you think ratings will be in 10 years when the JackJumpers and a Tassie A-League team are dominating both young talent/media/viewers.

With the JackJumpers my mates from the North West are all completely engaged (along with their kids) and go to every second game in Hobart.

That's when they can get tickets of course. As they sell out!!

And even then, Northern politicians have said they won’t support funding of a southern stadium. So there you go….the north v south geographical combativeness and jealousy has already started and they don’t even have a team yet !

Which politicians? Be interested to know who and what they said?

When you say critical mass v the NRL states are you aware of how many more players come via NSW or Queensland v Tasmania now ?

Exactly. You have inadvertently made a good point why Tasmania should have a team.

As you know draftees from Tas have dropped like a stone. From 1986-100 it had circa 10% of all draftees.

It is now 1.4%.

You can bet London to a Brick that will do a U-Turn with it's own team. Kids will have it's own local heroes, media will be all over them, money will flow to junior football pathways etc.

I don't think the AFL will care about any of that

Cmon Nobet Pays. It’s as rubbery as all hell. You (and others) have been complaining about Norf, GC, GWS etc being propped up financially for years. Concessions, priority picks and on. And now we’re gonna add another club to that social welfare list ? And for what ….just to keep the existing interest in AFL football which from a tv perspective hasn’t changed much ? Tipping in massive amounts of money as a retention exercise as opposed to a growth one ? Doesn’t make any sense for the AFL at all. And that’s without all the other issues down there as well eg geographical spread, having to use multiple grounds, keeping players in Tasmania, generations of Tasmanians already wedded to AFL teams etc etc.

A team in Tasmania would be great - if it’s sure to be a success. But I just don’t see it. Right now it’s an emotional and ethical platform more than a sound long term successful business one. At least half of the required revenue coming from government and AFL donations ? Cmon Nobets. That’s got whiskers on it.

And the state government has only committed to 10 years of funding. What happens after that, particularly if the team is struggling ? Along with the missing capital investment required for a new ground, is that something else that’s missing from your wonderful Carter report ?

Can’t be too wonderful if the AFL have spent the last 2 months feverishly working with proposal representatives to address a whole host of blank spaces.

Read between the lines with the AFL. The possibly only thing Gil does well is negotiate. Especially with Governments.

He is stalling to get a better deal on that front. Plain to see.

Cmon Nobets. Stop being so ridiculous. There are generations of Tasmanian families wedded onto VFL-AFL teams over the last 100 plus years. Even with the significant degradation of Australian Rules in Tasmania over the last 30 years. Hawthorn alone has over 10,000 members in Tasmania.

And the Jackjumpers - a new phenomenon- are going to change all of that are they ? Sold out ? All 4,000 tickets. You need to sell out 25,000 for an AFL team Nobets. Cmon. The Jackjumpers are 2 bad seasons away from being the Tassie Devils and you know it.

There was an article in The Mercury about the northern dissent towards funding of a new stadium in Hobart when Gutwein first started spruiking it. Look it up.

Nobets, as I said to Snakes, you need to draft and build a team from all over the country. Not just your local domain. Again, you know that. Yes, a re vitalised football industry and academy will help but you need players from all over the nation and you need to KEEP them.

And finally, we must have different mates back there Nobets. Most of my mates are members of Victorian AFL clubs and were insulted when I asked them who they’d follow, support and be a member of if Tasmania got a team.

You yourself said you’d continue to support Richmond.

He’ll want to. He needs a few more hundred million.

And you still haven’t answered my question: where’s the funding for a new or re vamped stadium coming from ? Nobody in Tasmania has proffered that yet.

And don’t tell me that an un re vamped Blundstone or York Park fits the bill either Nobets just because they’re already playing there. That’d be silly. They’re only holding infrequent boutique games like Manuka is. You need a proper stadium with proper facilities for a home based AFL club that holds 25,000 minimum for its home based supporters to attend. Bellerive and York Park currently only cater to North Melbourne and Hawthorn fans - not an entire state following its home team. Otherwise you’re pretty much admitting it’s only gonna get small crowds.

Hey zips - can you find a date when it got to -5 deg in Hobart. This weekend is a shocker weather wise, but I think this southerly low is hitting Melb as well, we have snow on the mountain now and it may snow down to 200m tonight and I can guarantee you it won’t get to -5 in the city. It will be lucky to get to zero tbh.
I saw footage of people skiing down the streets of Hobart a few years back, think it might have been before global warming kicked in n melted all the snow.

The Tassie Two-Step! The National dance of Australia! You see it on the dancefloors of pubs and wedding receptions everywhere. One step to the right, one step to the left, repeat.
