Thought it was a bit of a stretch Arnold saying Albo should give Australians the day off work.

Drinking his own bath water me thinks.

This team and the qualifiers have failed to catch the imagination of the Aussie public, something is missing with the squad or is it soccer more generally maybe.

FFS if he was a half decent manager we would have qualified months ago. The only reason we had two sudden death matches to make the finals is because Arnold is the Mark Neeld of soccer coaches.

Off topic but can an expert on the world game tell me what level Aleague is equivalent to in UK football? 2nd 3rd division? How about the lower leagues in France Germany etc?

mid to lower level championship for mine and the better teams would finish 3rd in Scotland. the A-League is much better quality than most Australians give credit to because they are obsessed with always comparing with the premier league.

People who are asking “who is Andrew Redmayne” this morning only have themselves to blame for not being more engaged in the domestic competition. About half of the squad that qualified for the world cup this morning play in the A-League.

How good is Kye Rowles?

Apart from a period in the first half we surprisingly had the better of that game in general play but as usual couldn't finish our chances. Team was extremely disciplined and kept great shape.

Peru unlucky with the header onto the post but on balance we deserved that and have to give Arnie some props - team obviously benefitted from a long training camp in Qatar.

Yeah well said. I still don’t think Arnold is international standard and he still likes his favourites. However, they planned these playoffs meticulously and it paid off.

As happy as I am this morning (and spewing because I have decided not to go to Qatar), I now have concerns that Football Australia will wallpaper over the cracks. I hope I am wrong and the governing body takes a long, hard look at itself. But I am not holding my breath.

But if we perform well in Qatar (we are in a decent group) and a home women’s world cup in 2023, maybe we will get the boost in the game domestically we so desperately need.

sidenote: How funny was the Redmayne look and stance after the winning save? He'll never have a bigger achievement in his lifetime, so good on him for milking it :mhihi

Somewhere on the long voyage by sail our English Welsh Scots and Irish forebears lost the singing gene. we don't sing in public.
Sad thing is. It possibly only went missing as late as the second half of the 20th century. In my grandparents generation (depression-WWII generation) there were still remnants of this phenomenon in society.

It's hard to recreate it once it's gone too. Look how hard we all cringe at Port Adelaide's "Never Tear us apart" because it feels just so manufactured and forced. Like an instantly created, 'ancient tradition'.

The players are not as well known. The super team of Germany had many recognisable players - there is no Tim Cahill, Kewell or Viduka these days. Think the public was spoiled by the relative success of that team too.

Arnolds not been coaching well, but bringing Redmayne on was a smart move. It was designed to play tricks in the Peruvians heads. I highly doubt they would have scouted the reserve goalkeeper, so would have been wondering why he was brought on. Any seed of doubt in a penalty shootout is worth its weight in gold.

Talking to a young fella who was born in the mid to late 1990s, it's funny how perspectives are just totally foreign to each other if we are born in different times. He looks back on those times as the norm - as if, that is the default standard of Australian teams.

Whereas to me, it was a once only generation and now we are back to the default.

I love sport but *smile* hate soccer. Didn't even know this was on until this morning and on hearing about the win my reaction is disappointment that it means I'll have to hear more about it now.

The fact you can play a game for 90 minutes and it's a draw because no-one can score and then the game is basically decided by luck for me sums up why it is a *smile* game.

Worst thing about it is it will take kids away from playing footy.

I am nowhere near qualified to know whether it is the team or the Coach or a combination of both but to me this team is the most uninspiring Socceroos team I have seen in a long time.
We can't score
It concerns me that what we are going to see in the World cup is damage limitation and hope for the odd point from disciplined defence
I'm not sure that is going to excite the masses into a major growth spurt for the game in Australia

You're a moderator on PRE and post this tripe? FYI, 4% of games end 0-0.

I don’t particularly like NRL, cricket or golf, and I haven’t posted on those threads in years (if at all). maybe next time you should just move on to the next thread without commenting.

Although I am more than happy to debate you on why Real Football is the best sport in the world and why the AFL has been stealing gameplans and sports science from this sport for many, many years

Probably a mix of both. We don't have the high quality cattle we've had in previous years. I can't think of anyone playing regularly in the EPL. The formation of the A-League and FA seems to have crippled our youth pathways and talent development.

Arnold is a spud. The best thing FA could do now is replace him with a manager who can give us a better chance in the World Cup, but looking at our group, Tunisia might be the only team we might be able to get a point or 3 off even with a decent manager.

But the World Cup is the World Cup. Better to be there than not.

I didnt know you were Mike Sheehan. I think you should stick to commenting on umpiring decisions and leave this topic to the grown ups.

You think the A League stacks up to those levels? Not sure on that Bin. Championship is a brutal league.

Yeh, that's pretty surprising and mostly ignorant from TBR. Would have assumed that type of response would come from some bogan Wyndhamvale footy head.
