2022 Draft Thread

What 18 year olds are performing well in the seniors in their league football.
Jed Hagan for one, there are more.

This is the first year I've watched a lot of u18s on a sustained basis. In the past I've just watched the odd game when I've had the time, like most I guess. I've learnt a lot. Its not easy, a lot of hours, sustained concentration, so I understand the circular and mostly shallow discussion of the talent. Most people a) wouldn't watch many games and b) even if they did wouldn't watch them closely or actively. We're only human, we are aware of certain players and we hear them or see them and we take more notice, it takes a lot of energy and discipline to watch for long periods and stay 'neutral'.

There is not a lot of insightful analysis, there is a bit, and it stands out, but not a lot. Its mostly just comments on how the glamour big names have gone. Just to give one example, and this was from some 'pros' there were a couple players in the Vic Metro game v Allies who looked like Ashcroft, the commentators just called Ashcroft whenever any of them got the ball.

There was another game where a glamour player was beaten in the midfield cold by a low profile player in a NAB league game, objectively, to the eye, by the stats, but all the match reports just trotted out how good the touted top 10 pick had gone, no mention of the unknown. The top 10 pick is a good player, and he has played a lot of good games and deserves to be drafted, but its just an example.

I think the above would be normal, happen every year, but this year, with covid wrecking 2 years of development, a lot more nuance and consideration of context is required. Its a big ask, but would reap big rewards this year.

I think with these picks we might have to roll the dice on a ruck forward, Trent Knobel's son deserves to be drafted, I think there is decent forward potential, plays a bit like Mason Cox with his ability to outstretch & mark the ball at its highest point. Max is already 205cm so he's going to be a unit.

Lemmey I'm lukewarm about, he looked a different player this year, but I suppose with a junk pick it's fair weight.

There's mature age recruit Kaelen Bradtke who is the perfect rookie selection, he has the explosiveness to go with the role.

Phoenix Foster another to consider, he can take a contested mark & is solid at ground level.

Knobel son looks like has plenty of upside and Foster I like. Who else could we target from the wafl , sanfl etc ?.

Bullus Kaelen Bradtke could be a perfect pick up how do you rate him.

Those who watch the Ovens & Murray league will have better insight but his form in the VFL showed glimpses of talent, particularly the ability to run off his opponents. He's a nice height at 196cm and being 21, a club can make a call in 12 months, it really is a low risk/high reward selection.

Will Verall is another worth considering, I see him more as a ruck but you might get lucky as a forward, nice height & has an excellent contested game.

As for the mature age guys, horse has bolted with Darcy Fogarty, he would have been great, not aware of any Ben Brown bargains at this stage.

Reckon its a lot more than that. A lot.
He's worth a lot more but Collingwood seem intent on freeing up some cap space - watch this space I guess, will be interesting to say the least.

Thoughts on Cadman, Keeler & Jefferson? With the way things are going the Taranto opportunity cost will be at least Cadman & potentially Jefferson & Keeler combined.

How is the Taranto opportunity cost Cadman? He's likely to go top 5

Cadman is ranked 4-8 based on several rankings, 12 + 19 would be around the mark.
I find it difficult to follow your logic sometimes Bully.

You have made it abundantly clear that you don’t want us to trade our first 2 picks for Taranto, an established quality midfielder at a time when we are crying out loud for midfielders, but you’re happy to trade them for some kid who may or may not become a good footballer. Even if he does it won’t be for 3 to 4 years minimum.

May as well close thread for Thai years draft :cool:No doubt we have a KPF free agent lined up for 2025 .

Potentially the next 2 seasons forward half is better then our Premiership 2017 one , Lynch, Jack, Dusty , Timmy T , Cumberland, MJ , Bauer , Bolton, Clarke etc

Midfielders are a dime a dozen, key forwards as rare as hen's teeth, there is some logic, even if you don't see it.

Okay I see that. I think the club is looking to win another flag within the next 2 years whilst not sabotaging the medium term.

A 19 year old kid is more of a long term fix

I can see your point mate no doubt thanks God we got Lynch free agency. We don't need a gun forward , but I reckon we can get some value with our later picks to

But you are still dealing in hypotheticals. Why would a club with a top 5 pick trade it for picks 12 & 19? History says that never happens.
