Who was third man up?

109th most games played and 38th most goals kicked for Richmond. Ryan couldn't carry Vickery's bags as yet.

I agree but I'm not sure the last quarter was his most important priority.
It was a one on one contest.

You have set the bar really high with those Vickery stats.

Vickery was quick and agile but didn't have much of a leap. As Leysy says, a junior prodigy. Very talented. Kicked 36 goals as a 21-year-old. Never bettered it. Never became a ruck (less then 7 hit-outs per game, never averaged 10 hit-outs over a season). Very accurate kick at goal with 160.87 for his career. Most would agree he didn't fulfill the promise he showed at 21. 200cm. Couldn't jump. Seemed to fall out of love with the game and was finished at 27, an age when most bigs are peaking.

Samson has a big leap, splits packs and is 206cm. Transport him back in time to 2011, would he have kicked 36 next to reigning Coleman Medallist superstar Jack Riewoldt? Maybe. Scoop doesn't see it but Leysy, Jack, Smokin, Ezy, spook and others have noted the eye of the tiger. I think Samson will be peaking at 27 and beyond, which is not to say he won't contribute before then. Will become a ruck but will play mainly forward in any AFL appearance for the next 2-3 years.

I'm wondering. We have to think of Jack as a medium these days. He was never big or quick and the blokes manning him are getting bigger and quicker. He's a slow medium now. A Caddy. We're not going to take many marks inside 50 with just Jack and Tom against May, Lever, Petty and Gawn. Lynch plays his best footy when he gets on his bike. Great runner. Maybe he plays CHF and we see Samson at FF.

Samson needs games. And we might well need Samson.

We have always played a second ruck/forward. Miller was that player towards the back end of last year. So playing Ryan would be no different. Right now I see him a better option than Miller and Soldo.

Yes Martin playing predominantly forward throws a spanner in the works but once the season starts I can see that changing.
A better option than Miller on the back of a practice match which he was fresh as a daisy compared too everyone else.
Ryan ahs a future but ahead of Miller.Really?

It's a noticeable improvement. Physically looks much stronger & with that comes confidence.
Credit to the lad. He's obviously put in the work & is now reaping the benefits.

TV was tracking really well until he did his shoulder. He barely took a mark over his head again, and certainly lost the appetite for body contact with his arms up. I reckon the injuries led to a loss of love for AFL footy.

Ryan likewise is tracking well, it remains to be seen where the track ends, but it is heading the right direction. And you are spot with the hopeful progression- a forward/2nd ruck until about 27 when he transitions to a no1 ruck- Brad Ottens style- at least the is hope.

Fresh as a daisy is a bit much - played 3 quarters on the ball earlier in the day. ! Had to hang around all day after that, cool down, warm up again, and mentally switch back on. Hence getting his ears boxed at 3/4 time

I reckon if Riewoldt wasn't so smart he would have been retired two years ago. At some point he is going to hit the point where the balance tips too far physically that it doesn't matter how smart he is. Sooner than later.

It will be this year. He has gone on one year too many in my view

He's a natural forward and the size of a true ruck. Miller's a better mover but a compromise in both positions.

Jack was our MVP in our last AFL game . Very nearly got us over the line off his own boot.

If he wants to play, he keeps playing.

I feel like I've had this same argument every year for the last 5.

Jack will be Jack this year. Will kick 35-40 goals & that's fine.

It's just nice to see a young tall that we have drafted in our forward line take a few grabs & look promising.

Been a while since we have been able to say that.

Jack will benefit from some 666 leads now we have a better clearance setup. He has a knack of slipping away even though he’s slow.

Lynch will find easy goals too. We lacked these in 2022.

Martin is not a lead mark type but will drag attention regardless

I like Smokin’s assessment. Ryan could be a wildcard in this mix.

Really? And when Lynch was injured last year who was going to basically play one up in forward line, take the best defender? Cumberland only debuted half way through the year, Balta got thrown back. Miller, Soldo?

Jack looked like he was there for the pay packet on Saturday. Could be that he only wanted a run. Could be that the oppo are now better than him.
