Umpire farce - Getting worse by the minute!

36 umpires over 23 rounds at $130,000 each is a total spend of $107,640,000 over the season. Add goal umpires plus reserve umpires plus boundary umps plus the VFL umps plus finals, it is a lot of dollars to budget for
Them 36 umpy's are each earning $130,000 per year not per round. Need to do ur rithmetic again. Helps if you've got lots of fingers n toes to count on.
36 umpy's at $130,000 each per year comes in at a bit under $5mill. Then add a bit more for some spares to cover for form, injuries or illness. Then of course add on the fees for all the other umpy's. Guesstimate that the whole total would still come in around $ 10 to 12 mill for the lot, depending on how much the minor umpy's get paid.

My guess is on his 'game' - a slow lumbering big bloke who doesn't get too defenders taking marks or intercepting the play in front of him to cause interference.
He doesn't tackle so less likely to get frees against him for incorrect tackles like in the back or a too high tackle, and doesn't take part in the game as much as some of the others other than marking and taking shots at goal.

Franklin - 860 tackles, avg 15 disposals, 223 goal assists. Jack - 698 tackles, avg 12 disposals, 243 goal assists. Hawkins - 615 tackles, avg 12 disposals, 273 goal assists.
Ben Brown - 185 tackles, avg 10 disposals, 61 goal assists.

Amazing how there is usually a rationale explanation beyond the umpires are cheats. Nice post.

I don't disagree, I think he should have a few more for scragging as well(y)

Could also be the case that because he is smaller he has to engage more strongly with bigger opponents and it costs him frees.

Jack 92kg, Darling 95kg, Cameron 96kg, the lightest of all the big talls is Jack!!

I see your point but if we agree that the majority of the 36 are not A Grade decision makers then we need to cull them which requires a bigger pool. My contention is that a professional pathway (both Admin and on field) may/will increase the pool with a better output. Current AFL thinking seems to be if it aint broken it does not need fixing. I think it is broken needs fixing and submit a strategy. Does it need fixing if so what are other strategies?
I suppose my issue is, magically making them all professional and paying them more, does not fix the issues. It rewards mediocrity.

Nah. $120-130k pa. Each. Not per round. So for fielding 36 fieldies it would total around $4.32m to $4.68m pa. Without boundary/goal umps.

I know of one umpire who’s officiated a lot of games. On between $250k and $300k a season depending on how many finals ect.
Same bloke also works full time in another job and earns $250k doing that.
It’s not bad coin is it? So to make him professional and throw in his day job which might last 20 plus years longer than umpiring. How much??? To entice him to turf his main gig? And at the same time it will improve umpiring standards. Me not convinced.

Bit of the Nankervis syndrome with free kicks perhaps?
Nank does give away stupid free kicks, let's be honest here, at least once a game the aggression is a bit too much and you're like why dude :(

But funny the guys who are smaller in height and lighter in weight, have negative free kick counts. Stanley -73, Hickey -110, Nank -99

The median income in Australia is around $60k and average is about $90k.

So, if they are being paid $130k per annum that is plenty to make it a full time job.

They can be full time now, no reason they can't be.

Yep, that's what I'm getting at, when you are outsized like Nankervis and to a lesser extent Riewoldt you have to compensate by attacking the body a bit more, hence more free kicks.

It's a great guess and very well considered as a black box. However, every time I see him play I can't believe what he gets. Watch the two he received in the last on the weekend. Very soft, I'd say he's elite at accentuating contact and falling forward the slightest touch to his back.

Yeah he gets the softest frees and plays soft for me too.

But it's more that he doesn't give any frees away my reasons above were mentioned - 97 frees against in 162 games is very low.
Every big bloke gives at least 1 free against a game, he is around 0.60 frees against a game.
He doesn't get involved in extra plays by running, he doesn't get in the game and he doesn't tackle so that's why he has such a massive plus rate because there's nothing you can give a free kick against him for.

I'd be interested to know what his reach is. Only listed as a cm taller than Lynch which surprises me as he seems to play a lot taller.

Reckon his hit point on the ball would be pretty high compared to most forwards which would cause issues for the defenders.

Jack used to do petulant free kicks the other forwards don’t do IMO in regards to unrealistic marking attempts where he just jumps into his opponent and the ball is 2m above or in front of him.

Hawkins has got away with a lot of pushes too IMO or would be more against him.

Not sure why brown gets so many relative to against. I guess he gives up once he thinks he can’t get the ball so he can’t infringe.

Yeh, he knows that he only has to throw his arms up and accentuate any contact and he'll draw a free. The worst part is he is actually a very poor overhead mark. Players should be leaving him alone and letting him drop it.

He's an awful player to watch and an unlikeable competitor, the best part was the sideshow bob hair. No redeeming features now.

I don’t think there is a discrimination thing with regards to hair but he needs to grow it back. That scone needs to be covered up.

I dislike his playing style. He rarely makes genuine attempts to mark. He's more interested in seeking umpire assistance. It's a disingenous way to play. A bit like the Selwood shrug seeking to draw frees. Not behaviour to be celebrated IMO.

Yes, but he’s a pale vegan so let’s cut him some slack.
