Like many have said. His tank should/will develop. Even way back v North in the Feb practice match, he sowed lots of good signs but lots of walking around too, not because he was disinterested, he just had nothing in the tank. This may take 2-3 more years to develop. Still a few years away from his man body. Good signs though.

I think over the next 18 months we can get the best of both worlds with Nank / Samson. The key is to balance the workload of the rucks between the 2 of them. Maybe even something like Nank takes stoppages in the back half of the ground and Samson in the forward. Obviously wouldn't be a hard and fast approach, sometimes 1 will be on the pine etc, but Nank has great strength intercepting in between midfield and the backline and some of Samsons taps are super aggressive and put our players out in space. I reckon he would be an awesome weapon for us at F50 stoppages especially with players like Shai buzzing around him.

We can balance the ruck load between the 2 of them for the next 18 months, with the aim for Samon becoming our primary ruck in 2025.

That will come with physical maturity.

Gonna be a beast.

Most guys his size don’t have the footy IQ he has. How long is he signed for?
Yep, a few more kg's and he wont know himself, and agree on his "footy IQ', he's a very smart footballer.

Easily the most improved Tiger in the squad, though he is coming from one of the worst debut matches in the history of the world.
Jonathan Brown, to his credit, likes to compare his debut with Sampson's. They were very similar. I saw JBs and said to my mate I don't think I've ever seen a more useless, slow lump of a footballer, and as someone who followed the tiges through the 80s and 90s, that is saying something.

What do people here think his ideal weight should be for him to be number 1 ruck? He’s 206cm and I’ve seen his weight listed between 103-105 kg. Just curious as to what others think.

Functioning muscle strength and core strength can actually be achieved without putting on extraordinary amounts of weight but reckon another 5-8Kg of muscle wouldn’t hurt or impede him if it’s done over 2 seasons and not just 1 preseason

5-10 kgs of muscle but through the core I would say , so that around the ground he isn’t pushed off too easily.

BUT that part of his game is improving and his tap outs, to our advantage is a thing of beauty, (, Iwhich I would like to know some numbers), I love.

Much better than Nank.

Those two goals Briggs got from following up against Nank were nearly the difference.

Ryan’s hit-outs to advantage this year is 40.7% which is elite. Nankervis is 28.6 which is below average.

That 40.7% actually ranks Samson number 1 in the AFL for those who have attended at least 100 ruck contests this year.

I know he is frustrating people with his dropped marks
but I feel he is getting to good positions (remeber Chol was easily blocked off the ball and we hated his softness )
he is often getting two hands on the ball and getting a good piece of it ( I watch Jmar Ugle-Hagan closely , he tends to run under the ball or make unrealistic attempts from the back)

that all counts for little if you dont clunk some of them Lynch style

I think there is good cause for optimism on the way he has improved this season

over the last 25 odd years we've had Richo , Ottens , Reiwoldt and Lynch and a lot that have come and gone Griffiths , Elton , Vickery , McBean , Chol ...
lets hope he makes the good side of the ledger

Max Gawn is listed as 209 cm and 111 kgs. He’s more on the leaner side at that height compared to ROB (crows) 203 cms 105kgs or a Mumford type.
Maybe a couple of kgs more. But I think core strength needs more time and development. I don’t think he’s carrying much fat. Just needs more a little more muscle

Wasn't a flashy game, just a good really solid game from the budding star on the weekend.

Just did the common big man things well. Front spot, ball to ground, competed, tap work to advantage, hit the scoreboard. His elite smarts are starting to shine through.

Still think he could do with a rest at some stage, and a week or two at VFL level along the way so he can have an easy kill clunking marks.

And for suggestions saying he should number one ruck this year - No, No, No.

He has 10 years to play that role. Let's look after him and get every one of out of him by preserving his best physical and mental shape while he grows into his body.

One small observation from the weekend was when he deviated from his usual set shot routine and started to spin the ball in his hands like Castagna used to. He then veered right, off his run up line like he was trying to hook his kick and needless to say missed the set shot.
He’s normally a very good kick for goal but must stick religiously to his set shot routine. He’ll be better for it.

Its a fascinatingly good idea P-man.
It'll give Sammo a clear role but without the pressure of stoppages.
Backline rucking against the big frames like Hawkins Darcy or Jackson is difficult with the immature body.

It will help Nank too not needing to cover the ground.
And give a structure for long pack kicks.
But we'll pay for it with speed on the ground by playing 2 rucks at once. I think it can work

He's played #2 ruck for much of the season.
Which he clearly is the tallest.
Did he compete against Riccardi and Himmelburg yesterday?
So the numbers are skewed.
But he's doing well
