2023 Women's World Cup

thought the Ref let England get away with a lot ... foul count anyone ?

I'm all for aggressive football, but some of it was too cynical ... which fits and why they're disliked

not why Matildas lost however .. GO SPAIN

The poms were so much more skilful as a team and individually, much stronger and cleaner - ranked 4th in the world and I didn’t realise it was their 3rd WC semi in a row - so I guess the result isn’t that surprising .

Maltildas still did well and lifted well for awhile in the second half - the aim is still to finish on the podium.

indecisive defending cost the team dearly. Well done Matildas, all the same. Congratulations England.

Did we win yet? Did we win yet? Why is it taking so long? I'm hungry, I'm thirsty. This is just soooooo boring.
Past your bedtime Abe. Why post such *smile* on such a positive and transformative occasion? You really are a miserable old *smile*

England too good. We had our chances but were chasing the game, superb goal by Kerr, amazing. Great tournament.

Didn't think there were any lions in England. I don't reckon Burkina Faso would call themselves the rabbits.

Anticlimactic. Reckon we were clearly outplayed by England. Their ball skills were sublime and they maintain possession so well. Their defence resolute; seemed to cover Kerr and Fowler really well and didn’t give them much space to work in. Didn’t let Foord into the game. And when they had their chances they took them with clinical finishing. Hemp is an absolute star. Fast, skilled and strong and our defenders had no answer. She took full advantage of Carpenter’s brain fade and the pass for Russo’s goal was exquisite.

Notwithstanding Kerr’s outstanding goal we couldn’t finish second half chances. Absolutely terrible defending allowed England’s first 2 goals.

That said great tournament from the Matildas. Awesome effort and a semi final place is an incredible achievement.

Out-coached and out played. England cut out any space we had so we could not get any speed on the game.

But the goal from Kerr was top shelf. You don’t get many better goals than that in any competition regardless if it’s men or women.

Yeah one of the best couple of goals of the tournament. Only probably rivalled by Colombia’s goal in the quarterfinals and the cracking free kick goal for Panama that was their first ever World Cup goal. Some great moments.

Not sure we were out coached. Just not good enough.

Reckon Cooney-Cross was great.

We got destroyed tactically. England too good.

Can't help but feel we got this far through talent as opposed to tactics and system.

We were too timid, stagnant and negative. Maybe cooked from the France game?

However, the referee had no control of the game. Some nasty tackles in the first half. 1 card given, but should have been 4.

Second goal looked like a clear foul from my angle. Will check the replay.

Really disappointed, but that's Football.

Not sure what to do with myself over the coming months...

Beaten by a better team unfortunately.

Their defence was very well organised, I don't know much about Association Football but you could just see how well they defended.

Australia managed to create some very good chances in the second half, but we were just not quite good enough - the cross was a little off or the finish just wasn't there. Plus, England's defence was very difficult.

Sam Kerr's goal was legendary, what more can you say, spectacular, what a player.

Our defence far less organised. Those first 2 goals were too easy, could have defended both situations better.

It is what it is, England are simply a better team.

Great achievement by the Matildas, semi finals is pretty epic given the state of soccer in this country. Our players all play overseas because the A League and W League really are not much chop. Not sure if we can get any closer to he top in soccer, men will never get this far, but to compete against the best we need to be a notch above where we are now.

Oh well on to the final - Viva Espana.

On your 1st points, personally I thought the game in terms of style panned out exactly as expected. England would control possession and the Matildas would look to counter attack with pace. Thats how it played out, but England also knew that and their formation is set up to counter that. Playing wing backs means the wingers weren't sure if to stay forward or to drop back and support the defence, the holding midfielders in Stanway and Walsh stifled the space for Fowler to play in for much of the game.

I didn't think Gustavsson did much to counter this but it panned out exactly as expected IMO. I didn't think they looked cooked, the effort was there all the way through.

The 2nd goal - initially watching on TV I thought it was a foul but it wasn't, the position Carpenter got into meant she was totally off balance which caused her to miss the ball and leave the chance open to Hemp.

Didn't see any foul on the second goal. Carpenter made a schoolyard error trying to get boot to ball and allowing the defender to move past her. I imagine she'll be reliving that nightmare for a while.

Reflecting the morning after, what a brilliant effort by the Tillies to get to the semis. Our talisman, captain and best player in the world goes down injured in the eve of the biggest tournament in the world. The girls manage to put that away and become household names on their own. It's no longer Sam Kerr and the others.

And for us fans, last night we were able to see the magic that Sam Kerr can bring. While we lost the match, that Kerr goal will be talked about for years to come. She's the world's best, and she's Australian.

Paris Olympics here we come.

Regarding the men, wouldn't say never DS. Sure, the current dynamics mean you are competing with a deeper field in the men's tournament, which makes it extremely difficult. Plus the sporting landscape we have within Australia, with largely domestic codes of football taking a massive chunk of the male talent pool is another point of difficulty (this being a major contributing factor as to why our female athletes perform comparatively better in the Olympics than our men).

But, the World Cup two years ago, the Australian team on paper looked the weakest in years. Only just struggled into the tournament at the last moment. Looked expectedly outclassed for large periods of the opening game vs France. But after that were surprisingly solid. Made the knockout round and took Argentina (the eventual Champs) all the way in the round of 16. Certainly had our chances to score in the last moments to take it to extra time.

And remember in 2002, in a home World Cup, South Korea made the semis. Traditionally a very similarly ranked side to Australia and one of our main opponents for supremacy in the Asian Confederation.

In the broadcast last night there was a discussion about how the Matildas efforts aren't just a win for women's soccer in Australia. It was a win for the sport's profile in Australia overall. There were hundreds of thousands of little girls and little boys watching. And those boys can only aspire to be Socceroos, not Matildas (at this stage, despite some bizarre activism on this front). So it was just the fact that the sport has had such visibility that helps so much. Would it have captured the imagination of the nation quite as much if it was out of our timezone? The more dedicated followers yes. But for the casual, more fair-weather non-sport watching public? Or children who cannot sit up to the wee hours? Probably not. It's all about visibility. Visibility of the tournament being right here, and the bonus of the host nation going deep into the tournament combining as the perfect storm. A very shrewd move by FFA (and the NZ equivalent body) going after this tournament so hard. Some scoffed that it was a consolation prize after missing out on hosting 2022. But has turned out to be as powerful a marketing tool, albeit in some different ways.

Agree, go Spain. Really like their style of play. Enjoyable team to watch. And a great story too. In under a decade, they went from not even qualifying, to rifling straight up the rankings to the sharp end. Can see the likes of Argentina, The Balkans, Italy and co doing the same as they put more resources into their women's sides. Africa too. Will make it harder for the likes of Australia, the US and Canada. But great for the progression of the game overall.

Same. Thought she must have got pushed, but she almost relaxed as she approached the ball (overconfidence due to her pace?) and then got herself in knots and missed it twice. I suppose it shows you why being decisive and clearing a ball like that is the safest method!

So sad for Carpenter, she worked her guts out all game, she must be devastated.

Reckon Cooney-Cross was great.
She is just about my favourite now. Her improvement over the last 12 months on the international stage has been huge (along with Fowler). I am a big fan of the composed skillful types.

Thought she had a terrible game. She’s a shaky defender and scrappy on the ball.
I dont think she has come back to her best form from her ACL, her running is there again, but her decision making is a bit hit and miss.
