2023 Jack Dyer Medal

One thing the Jack Dyer medal shows is that we really need the youth to come on. The youngest players in the top twenty are Mansell and Balta at twenty three.
We need the one to four year players to start demanding games.

Don't you think those supporters who attended the function and all those watching the Live stream deserve a lot more than 10 sec of a few thank-you's? We'd like to hear that he's looking forward to next year, to play 300 at the Tigers, etc. But we got nothing. His manager should take some responsibility as well. He couldn't get off the stage quickly enough.
No ill will toward you at all mikey, it was a throw away line, but seriously, Norm Smiths or fancy feel-good speeches? Bit of what have you done for me lately.

FWIW I have a personal theory regarding talent and human endeavour, the better you are at something and the more famous you are for it, the less likely you are at being good at other things.

1987 was the start of the youth policy, this is more like 1983 with a host of aging stars dominating and very little in the way of fresh talent rolling through. This was also the time we lost Geoff Raines, Brian Taylor and David Cloke and recruited a whole host of B graders (although I did like Annear from that era). Looking at the bottom 5 there's a few red lights, those players should be featuring in the top 15, we're lagging and Clarkes' picks are looking sickly in comparison to Jackson's, it's been 7 years and will soon be 8 with very little chance of nailing an A grader this year.

Leysy is proof this is false.

From inside the room last night:

Progressive top 6 leaderboard was shown up on the screen whilst the round by round highlights were being shown up until Round 18 from memory. Taranto was on 63 votes at that point (around 15-20 votes clear of Rioli in 2nd) so obviously both tailed off at the end of the season.

Baker and Hopper from memory were both in the top 6 up until Round 7 or so.

Dusty didnt appear in the top 6 until very late in the season (perhaps Round 17).

No photos allowed with the players on the night as requested by the club, but one player I will single out is Lynch - went out of his way to say hello to as many supporters as he could on his way in which was quite impressive (most other players completely ignored the fans as they walked past). They dont have an obligation to say hello of course, but I thought it was actually some impressive leadership by Lynch to do so. Unfortunately he was still in a moon boot as mentioned on here which is a bit worrying.

Speeches were a bit lacklustre, highlight of the night clearly when Jack was up on stage. We are going to miss him dearly around the club no doubt about that.

Whilst it was a good night - I'd suggest that for the ticket price it is not worth it unless you view it as a sizeable donation to the club. Not sure Ill be heading to it again at that price point for what you get.

I went for many years and it’s always been a good night, very good when weve won the flag :)) . I agree though the price is bull *smile* , I know they always say it’s the players night “ please no photos “ fair enough , however it also should be a thank you to the fans as the final event of the year , there’s a hell of a lot of die guards who do plenty for the club all year who fork out the big coin for the evening , not sure it takes much for the boys to be polite . Generally they are left alone as their tables are seperate to the public .

definitely sounds like the JDM needs an overhaul

It was left to the new boy in the room, not once but twice to thank the fans at the back, well done Timmy Taranto👋

votes per game (for those that polled 10 votes or more). so many poor results - experienced players such as Jack, Grimes, Pickett, Graham, Kmac polled poorly. Even Shorty, who should be in his prime.
Ross the major surprise.
Youth really need to step up.

The under 19s were roaring around this time, the change of focus began with KB and although many failed to kick-on the sentiment was well ahead of its time. The kids started appearing in 1988 and would see some top end talent arrive at the club - Lambert, Pickering, Ryan, Hogg, Nicholls, Gale, Free, Knights and Bower.

2017 comparison for reference:

Martin 3.6
Rance 3.2
Lambert 3.2
Cotchin 3.0
Grimes 2.8

Bachar 2.7
Vlastuin 2.5
Riewoldt 2.5
Butler 2.4
Prestia 2.4

Grigg 2.3
Edwards 2.2
Conca 2.2
Bellis 2.0
Rioli 2.0

Nank 1.9
Broad 1.9
Astbury 1.8
Castagna 1.6
Mcintosh 1.4
Caddy 1.4

So Vlastuins 2023 performance was enough to get the 3rd highest votes per game. The same number of votes per game would have seen him finish 13th in 2017.

Thanks for that Ice, ice baby 😉

Dusty was coming home like a steam train.

Missed 3 and Taranto 1 game.

That 2017 table shows how even that side was from 6-20.

Top 4 all above 3’s and 2023 we had only 1 above 3.

4 2.5 and above in 23 and only 1 above 2.5 in season 23.

That 17 side is just so overlooked by the media with their love fest over Collingwood.

That 17 side would wipe the floor and take them to the cleaners such was their phenomenal power 2 way running.

They would have been relentless and ruthless.

Not sure if this has been asked, was Marly Pickett there? His demenaour?

Also, did the indigenous boys stick together on a table or sit anywhere?
Only asking as when they pose for photos on ground they are very close.

Also rumour that T. Thomas may come over from Norff.
Having big indigenous foot print may be big factor in his decision.
Thanks.

Soldo 0 votes from 8 games. And some around here would rather him over Nankervis!?!
