Welcome To Richmond - Steely Green

Oscar McDonald just got re-drafted for his 10th AFL year.

Played 12 games since 2019.
Ffs…

Still doesn’t match my boy Mitch Brown though.

McDonald has played 86 games in 8 seasons whereas my boy Brown played 79 games over 13 seasons going just 9 games in his last 3 seasons with Melbourne.

Brown also played for 3 different clubs, just to further highlight the long running absurdity and charmed existence some players are given.

Tom Campbell, 10 years 55 games, card carrying I'm no good but drawing a cheque big man club.

Having to wait for a ruck six years is going out of fashion, pinch them from elsewhere.

I need to do some research but it feels like the waiting period for rucks has shortened up.

By 23 Sean Darcy was showing plenty, Riley O'Brien broke out at 23 after 4 years of nothing....
Darcy and O'Brien are big bulky grunt rucks. Samson's more like Gawn in type. (Don't @ me, I said type.) Tall and willowy.

Gawn in 2014 was the age Samson was last year: he played 9 games, averaging 10.6 disposals, 4.2 marks, 14.8 hitouts, 0.4 goals. English was that age in 2020: 18 games, 13.4, 4.3, 16.0, 0.4. Samson in 2023: 14 games, 7.1, 2.9, 12.2, 0.9. Played mainly forward, I'd say more than the other two. More goals, fewer disposals, marks and hitouts.

Gawn spiked to 37 hitouts a game in 2015, at the age Samson is this year. Disposals up to 13.5. Marks and goals much the same. English's big leap forward came in 2022, the year he turned 25, when he jumped to 18.1 disposals, 5.4 marks, 23.7 hitouts, 0.7 goals. Improved again last year to 19.1, 6.3, 31.2, 0.7.

We should see improvement from Samson this year. (We've seen it every other year.) Like Gawn, it might be quantum, or like English, it might be incremental, with a later spike.

I'd be pleased if Steely was selected for 1 senior game this year after his unspectacular debut season.

To his credit he played well in the match sim managing four opportunist goals up forward so that was encouraging.
Seemingly was matched up against Short & Ralphsmith when he kicked those. He did look to have increased his strength & fitness.

Looking forward to seeing if some of that positive form translates as real games start. Fingers crossed he improves significantly this season & has a great year.

Who was the ruckman we took with a low 1st round pick who stayed for years and never played a game?

As I recall Samson rucked against Max Gawn in 2023. Gawn killed us in the end but for a good period in the first half before he ran out of puff Samson was quite good, very competitive. Gawn imo is the best ruck the AFL has seen in the last decade.

I have no doubt Samson will be an excellent ruck, he is tracking nicely. To be the sort of player Gawn is he needs to build his body and tank and improve his marking because Gawn's big asset is getting back into the hole to take defensive marks or drifting to a wing and competing down the line. Samson's actual ruckwork is very good.

On the other side I think he is already a more natural forward than Gawn and is a better kick for goal, which means he can rest forward and be very effective

This is not a knock Ryan, but Gawn had done his ACL twice before he was 21.

I agree we should see continued improvement from Ryno this season.

i reckon at half time Gawn and Grundy figured out they were a lot stronger than Ryan so just started to batter him. They then took over the ruck contests.

Can Steely Green play ruck..?
That's it, Oldie. Not only do talls take longer to develop and therefore must be given longer, there's also fewer of them. How many 175cm, not particularly athletic, bloody good little players are there in Australia? 20,000? How many with Samson's height and gifts? 20?

Talls do get more time & smalls have to impact quite quickly no doubt.

Anyway Bakes was overlooked in the 2016 draft so he wasn't impressing too many back when & Steely has a been compared him.
Whilst unimpressive in year 1, I want the best for all our kids so hopefully the rate of improvement in Steely is similarly brisk.
