Richmond v Collingwood - Community Shield Game - IKON Park Tuesday, February 27th 6.40pm

Just a good hit out for mine against a quality side. Plenty for Yze to work on, and if gives him a clear picture of where we're at. Prefer a 5 goal loss against a good side, than a 5 goal win against a poor side.

Happy to trial Balta up forward, but FFS he's an elite interceptor in the backline, and he's an 80 metre player with speed to get us out of trouble. Sure he got some kicked on him last year and has some brain farts, but let him develop there. I think Gibbo would be more comfortable as a forward.

As has been mentioned, 23-8 frees. Obviously we're use to this nonsense, but it doesn't make it any easier to cope with. You can see the despondency in the players. Work your arse off only for the umps to pay a soft free to the oppo, or miss one to us. Our players were baffled by that *smile* one, threw his head back and got the free.

Collingwood are very fortunate, good luck to them but FFS. Getting 3 elite F/Ss in one team is lucky. Lucky their parents had a boy, and not a girl like most of our ex-players. Lucky they have elite skills, unlike our F/Ss Raines, Naish, Roach etc. And then you have Pendlebury and Sidebottom still playing elite footy at their age. Imagine if we still had Cotch and Lambert still playing in 2017 form.
Pretty tough on Balta. Over use of handball when under pressure meant our disposal into the forward line was poor. Don't write him off as a forward after only 1 game against last years premier defence.

Unfortunately serenity was never part of my Uncles life. Gun footy player (played state footy for SA) but could never handle the punt. Coached a in Tassie and country VIC after his SA career ended. Burnt a few bridges in those towns is the story (gambling debts). Could never find peace.

A very australian story

Last play, Johnson whack Pickett on the chest then the Septic Tank pushes him forward, while the flog just watches...

Should've been a (soft...for once!) free to Pickett.
Correct. Umps should have been alll over that. And it should of came up in their review because the non free kick ended up being a melee. Totally avoidable.

It's bizarre how poor his judgement is under a high ball. When he has a run and jump to a normal kick he is OK. When he has to judge a high kick he almost craps himself. He doesn't lack courage, but he is so suspect in those instances. Cost us a goal and momentum.
Cost us 2g dropping sitters , one in defence and one in f50 that should have been a shot from 30-40 out

We have so few players who can get separation on their opponent. Many one paced players.
It puts our disposal under enormous pressure. Slow scrappers.
This is how the Pies, more than any other side, have put us to the sword over the last few years. Overhead. The mistake many people make, IMO, is that foot speed == speed. If you have hard working players who run to receive and kick it to a player with separation (workrate) the ball moves quickly, it doesn't matter if the player himself isn't a jet. Run-&-carry looks flashy and we all love to see a jet flick the afterburner and torch an opponent. But you don't need a fleet of them to be "fast". You need players who's 1st instinct is good and who can hit a target. Or you need a very, very well drilled unit that allows a HBF to instinctively boot the ball to a space because he KNOWS we have it covered. Looks like genius when it works. Looks like Auskick when it doesn't.

YZE has had all pre-season to set the team up to handle the speed of the modern game.

Received a reality check last night.

Wonder if he double's down and runs with the same heavy midfield or if he realises the team is too slow through the middle and changes things up.

Not long until round zero, will take some big plums to try and implement positional changes now.

When is Pickett's court case? I think March 1 going by below: just saying!!, not sure how you block that out, (but yes he was ordinary last night).

but the case was adjourned until March 1

That’s just a committal mention date, his actual court case won’t be until after the season is over.

Was not a match that I will want to remember but in hindsight, we can see where many of our problems lie and hopefully Yze and the coaching team can do something to correct the main ones before the start of the season because if not, then it will be a long season

Not referring to Balta last night, and I'm not writing him off. Just think he's better suited to the backline.

Pickett was one of our better players on the day.

I look at players like Pickett and think how important is going to be to have someone tough, who runs all day, and puts their body on the line, when we're bleeding through a bunch of kids who need leadership.

Tom Brown, Seth Campbell, Steely Green, they need to see what it looks like to actually run. To put pressure on the seams of your lungs. To make the contest when you can't make the contest.

And the side needs it if we're going to ever win the ball back.

Biggest complaint I saw here was the ease with which Collingwood transition. With which they sliced through us. You trade a Pickett for a Sam Banks, and you may as well butter the knife.

Yes, he had a couple of dropped marks, which hurt. But a key takeaway from reading Jack's book is that good sides whether those moments. A error and then a goal will happen, (always and for both sides) but it's the overall shape of the game that determines the win.

Great take CT. Do you have the same thoughts on KMac?

Really liked what I saw in the first quarter. Not so much in the last 3. Yze needs to persist and encourage the players on their 1st qtr effort.

Went to the game, 1st qtr was great but not getting too excited by it, also a combination of pies being a bit rusty before they got motoring at qtr time. It was a good hit out before the season starts, we showed enough to give us confidence to build on moving forward but also showed us the difference between us and the best. Pies cover space really quickly and one thing that stood out to me more than anything else, was that once they put a mitt on one of our players we couldnt break their hold/tackle.

Naismith, Gibcus and Dow were real positives. Baker and Short worked into the game and by the end were looking sharp and ready for round 0. Tarranto was very good early before fading. Kmac and Pickett were very good also(except for Picketts dropped sitters). Prestia and Hopper were meh, disposal was sloppy. Our repeat entries and transition defence was very good till about halfway through the second qtr and then folded under the pies pressure. Definitely something there to build on.

I noticed that when we were under the pump from halfway through the second qtr, we lost our composure and stopped looking for short passess to try control the tempo. We just kept banging it long down the line and pies just kept moping it up. Thats something we'll get better at as the season progresses as the players get more and more confident in our structures and new team rules.
