Richmond v Collingwood - Community Shield Game - IKON Park Tuesday, February 27th 6.40pm

Flaws in Skills can't be fixed.
Our footskills would be ranked 19th
That was one issue, but there we're others to. Players with poor footy skills and can't hit targets need to be weaned out of the team there not negotiable.

Collingwood are always gonna expose that game.

their pressure is real.

Posted this in the ressies thread but thought I'd post it here too.

McAuliffe, Cumbers and the Sonz will add to the senior line up when they get their chance.

Cumbo just has a knack of getting into the right spots. Kicked 3 and had 3 goals assist.
McAuliffe great running goal on his left. Works hard, has speed and uses it well.

Archie may looks a likely type. A good turn of speed. Very mobile.

In the end a 6 point loss.

The game commenced at quarter time. We had the outnumber until then but were victims it after that. Once established, Collingwood's defensive traps and rebound were too much for us.

When we have the outnumber targets are easier to spot because more space and time and easier to hit for the same reasons. More space and time for user and target. Conversely when we are outnumbered targets are harder to identify in the traffic and much harder to hit. After a sustained period of being outnumbered players expect pressure even when there is none. And *smile* up.

The outnumber flatters disposal. Root cause does not equal disposal skills. (Not to say that we weren't sloppy with the ball when clear. Different root cause IMO - setting to space I50 plan.) Root cause = no time or space.

Our formations in the game proper, after Collingwood turned up, were often ragged. We looked disorganised and yeah - slow. And yes, some of our players were not switched fully on in February and shouldn't be.

Yze has to persevere with his plan for now. Three tall forwards. But we need better talls, talls who can own air. (Josh Gibcus owned air.) And perhaps smalls who can play tall in lieu of actual talls. (Shai was our third best tall. Maybe second.)

Fly put the cue in the rack early in the third. Subbed on four juniors. Yze persevered. Eventually he threw numbers behind the ball. Had it been in season he might have taken talls off to get better numbers. Instead he sandbagged the margin.

With the game blown away the camera lingered on Yze in the box, arms folded, face grim, numbers behind the ball. It was an educational Escort Cup match.

my Nana and Pop's week-long honeymoon constricted quite suddenly to a half day-long honeymoon,

by a short-half head at the Moonee Valley races.

Yze's 10 unanswered goals, on the way to winning the war on drug last week,

was perhaps a longer and more fulfilling honeymoon?

We shouldnt lose sight of the fact we should have been 5 goals up at quarter time against the premiers tho

Honeymoons have a planned finish time, eZ. I hope the finish of Adem's didn't catch him offguard.

When Dusty blows the cobwebs out he'll be lighting games up. He was right to play to his usual preseason form. Shai allows himself exactly the same privileges that the coach allows Dusty. And even if the great champion Dion ever recaptures his old form it won't be before August.

Hopper is a naturally scrappy player. He takes time to polish up. Taranto improved then got patchy. Fair enough.

If a fit Lynch plays and has a dip (like it's September) he kicks five in that first quarter.

It's February. There's not much form to be trusted.

Just a good hit out for mine against a quality side. Plenty for Yze to work on, and it gives him a clear picture of where we're at. Prefer a 5 goal loss against a good side, than a 5 goal win against a poor side.

Happy to trial Balta up forward, but FFS he's an elite interceptor in the backline, and he's an 80 metre player with speed to get us out of trouble. Sure he got some kicked on him last year and has some brain farts, but let him develop there. I think Gibbo would be more comfortable as a forward.

As has been mentioned, 23-8 frees. Obviously we're use to this nonsense, but it doesn't make it any easier to cope with. You can see the despondency in the players. Work your arse off only for the umps to pay a soft free to the oppo, or miss one to us. Our players were baffled by that *smile* one, threw his head back and got the free.

Collingwood are very fortunate, good luck to them but FFS. Getting 3 elite F/Ss in one team is lucky. Lucky their parents had a boy, and not a girl like most of our ex-players. Lucky they have elite skills, unlike our F/Ss Raines, Naish, Roach etc. And then you have Pendlebury and Sidebottom still playing elite footy at their age. Imagine if we still had Cotch and Lambert still playing in 2017 form.

Had a similar tale related down the family of an Uncle who, by courtesy of 100/1 pop, bought a ring and paid for a wedding & honeymoon.

Unfortunately he never changed and ended penniless & miserable, living in a converted garage in Salisbury Adelaide.

Theres a new free for Daicos Bros - 'shat pants, nick daicos'
Fast becoming a very disliked pairing. Nick is going to fast gather a reputation similar to Selwood. Would not surprise to see him subject to some booing. He's got some amazing traits but this part of his game is very irksome!

Baker and Trezise to the backline.
Rioli, Cumberland, Coulthard, Sonsie to the fwd line. We need more zip run and class.
Bolton and Martin to the midfield. We need more clearance players.
Banks and Ross to the wings. We need better delivery.
Graham, Hopper, Pickett, McIntosh to the reserves.

Exactly right. Luck is their gift. Fluked goals, flogs in love with their backsides, best new coach went to them, copying our blueprint......

the elbows were out of Pop's cardigan.

and he drank a lot of booze to medicate the melancholy,

but he had one of the most picturesque cottages on a hill in the Central Highlands.

and lots of happy times;

I've watched the 1st 10 mins and we have played really good footy, but burnt heaps of chances. 1.7 from 9 shots (Dustys 1st went out of bounds) from 11 inside 50's. We've burnt heaps of chances, Shai burnt someone at the top of the square and kicked a behind from the pocket. Dusty missed 2 you'd expect him to get 1 of. We've had a few kicks at goal from 50 on the run when we should be running them in closer to goal. Thats rusty decision making but the handball game is terrific so far. Bakes, Taranto, Rioli, Short and Prestia are the main drivers of it so far.

I know from the score that the game will turn, but this is a great start showing our best matches it with the best still. Instead of 1.7 I reckon we should easily have levelled that up. 4.4 or 5.3 would have been the more likely return and then scoreboard pressure does its thing.

Certainly poor after 1st qtr when Dusty, Prestia, Taranto and others played well. Don't forget Dusty has been managing soreness or something and Prestia has been dealing with another soft-tissue injury so I'm not surprised they both faded as the game went on. Still not sure what our recruiters saw in Hopper so he looks like a recruiting fail. Not sure if Brown will make it, Kosi is only a temporary substitute for Lynch and we do have Coulthard and Mcauliffe to come in when they're ready. But if we want speed and class we probably need to get some top 15 picks or get lucky with very late picks like Castagna and Butler but who knows if those types are still around. On the bright side, if we slide down the ladder we will be in the frame for picking some quicks with kicking skills. Then we have to wait for development.

Unfortunately serenity was never part of my Uncles life. Gun footy player (played state footy for SA) but could never handle the punt. Coached a in Tassie and country VIC after his SA career ended. Burnt a few bridges in those towns is the story (gambling debts). Could never find peace.
