Darren Winter coached my boy at Lauderdale in the State League. Horrible man. Treated the players like *smile*
Doesn’t come across as a particularly affable character. Or the type of person who would be a good manager of men.

Could play footy no doubt (not overly fairly). Had some talent and skills. But it’s actually pretty often that those blokes live in a bubble that they have zero perspective or tolerance for people without the same natural gifts as them, or how to get the best out of them. Add to that a naturally belligerent demeanour…..a pretty shitty cocktail.

i wonder how much of that $375 million (I'm sure it'll be more by the time it opens) the Tassie government is paying for the new stadium could have been used for grassroots sports? Or an upgrade to My State Bank Arena?

It won't impact My State Bank Arena. Money will be invested in that. The JackJumpers success will see to that.

Getting the stadium, thus a team also means the AFL will put in $33M towards junior development and $90M in grass roots football.

Plus the extra govt money to help other sporting infrastructure in the Nth West and North.

Taking aside that it is needed for the team to go ahead, the stadium is the single biggest thing that will determine the new teams success.

Not to mention all the other benefits it will bring. Best thing for the state in decades.

Reckon anyone doesn't understand that has rocks in their head.

I think what it probably illustrates though, is the AFL team is a last gasp to essentially keep the sport alive in Tasmania, in any meaningful capacity.

I’ve always had the fear that maybe the AFL team has come 20-30 years too late. The time to enter was the on the back of the 90s bid, when the AFL then chose to admit Port Adelaide instead of Tasmania. This was coming off strong State of Origin performances when the general systemic entrenchment of the sport at a community level was sufficient to underpin a team.

I still have doubts we haven’t gone past the point of return. Time will tell.

The Devils need to provide an AFL, VFL (ressies), AFLW and women’s ressies side.

Sure, the AFL and AFLW sides can theoretically be filled without needing to even draw on Tasmanian talent in the first instance. But the supporting ressies sides need to at least to some degree, draw from the supporting footy system to maintain sides. Hard to see that element being up to scratch in such quick turnaround. That will be a generational project.

If you think the men’s footy structure in Tasmania is on its knees, should see the women’s. All over the shop, so poorly managed and hap hazard. The initial flavour of the month has worn off and girls/women are leaving the game in droves in the south at least.

My boy could play ok. It's when he didn't want to play for Winter that the personal campaign started. Abusing a 21 year old is not acceptable. Horrible man

He was the king hit champion of football for a while. Strong competition from Ambrose MacDonald and a couple of others like Tractor Graham.

All of them cowards.

Ha! Whish! Just misunderstood lol.

Couple of olds videos here.

“In one of the most violent matches seen in Tasmanian football for years, the Hawks would race away with the match early and not give the disappointing Demons a sniff.

Hawks defender Dale Whish-Wilson sparked off much of the violence when he was reported for an ugly incident involving North Hobart's Mark McQueen in the third quarter, some 60-metres behind play.

So angry were the North Hobart players that the whole Demon team raced in to confront Whish-Wilson, Burnie Hawks coach Warren "Putt" McCarthy had ordered Whish-Wilson from the ground after the incident and as he was leaving the ground the Demon players chased him over the boundary line, across the cement bike track and over the fence in front of the Frank Matthews Stand to continue the brawl.

In a media interview after North Hobart's 63-point loss, coach Garry Davidson lashed out at the umpiring standards, labeling them 'a joke' claiming his 'younger players were bashed out of the match by thugs with no protection whatsoever from the umpires'.

For his part, Whish-Wilson was suspended for four matches by the TFL tribunal, a suspension which also riled Garry Davidson for its leniency, and Devonport police announced its intention to charge Whish-Wilson with assault following the incident on McQueen and he was later charged and sentenced to serve 49-hours of community service orders. McQueen spent two nights in the North West General Hospital following the incident.”

Sounds like just an old fashioned enforcer that Whish bloke. Every player from the oppo side would be quietly peeping over the shoulder n Whishing he wouldn't come near them.

Beyond enforcer. Just a criminal thug.

A fair thing to do would have been the Burnie coach, players and fans just cutting him loose and allowing the angry North Hobart mob to have their way with him unhindered. Sounds like his coach wasn’t well pleased by Wish’s actions on this occasion anyway.

Yeah, country/suburban football (including the VFL back before trial by video) was too often an excuse for gutless thugs to assault people. So many blokes should have been charged with criminal assault and didn't even get suspended. Utter dogs.

Pretty much par for the course back in the day. Every club had an enforcer or two in the side n if some bastard got away with something untoward in a game, there was certain to be retribution in the rematch later in the year, or even a year or two later if opportunities were hard to find.

Perfect example was Dennis Banks’s infamous knockout punch on David Rhys-Jones.

Pretty sure there was a big bloke from Richmond that was pretty good at decrapitating Carlscum players back in the day too. Got me a feeling he might have taken out a pair in one game n didn't even get in trouble for it.
There'd be players getting there match day permits revoked n a please explain from the Plod these days.

Banks got suspended for 3 matches. That was payback for Rhys-jones splitting Banks eye open shortly before. Late hit from Rhys-jones after Banks got a handball away.
DR-J dished plenty out and copped a few back. There was an incident with Diesel Williams as well

Correct, that’s exactly what I inferred, the so called enforcer copping one back as TM said.

If you watch the body language of DRJ, how he drops the sitter. He wasn’t really committed to, or watching the ball. He knew he had made a fatal error in that he didn’t get Banks well enough prior (and not a good bloke to cross), and knew full well Banks was lurking in the area, looking to deliver some payback.

The thing that stands out about these incidents from the 80s (and 70s for that matter) is how cowardly they all were. Hits from behind, belting someone who is on the bottom of a pack, defenceless. None of them saw it coming. Rare that you saw one of these tough guys face up to their victim and pop them on the nose.

It’s a bit of a contrast with Rugby League style of fights. Not saying more cowardly sniper type shots, that you discuss, didn’t occur in Rugby League (and of course, there was the infamous Hopoate finger up the bum hole match). But often it was more honourable toe to toe fist fights.

Rugby Union on the other hand, even more brutal sniper type tactics than Aussie Rules. Stomp on blokes heads at the bottom of the pack, rip the scrotum, gouge out eyes etc.

Indeed. I was just thinking about the infamous Bob Cooper brawl, Wests v Illawarra in 1982. Netted Cooper a 15 month suspension, during which time he took up Aussie rules!

Ballarat FL GF, circa 1990? Dale Lewis's brother Wes was a class above the comp. I watched a bloke called Clark - a renown boxer hard man, kinghit Lewis off the ball, knock him out, stood over him and lifted his head by the hair, and hit him again.

can't remember the outcome. I think the hitman was too tough and mental to remonstrate with?

but he was clearly executing a plan. Plan worked - Lewis's North ballarat lost.

worthy of a life-ban and a year in jail I reckon.

definitely an aspect where AFL has progressed lightyears
