2024 Draft Thread

Can see why you’d have little faith in that cohort based on performances to date but gotta keep in mind they’re still very young (except maybe Ralphsmith) and only just approaching physical readiness for AFL. Haven’t exactly had a stellar inside brigade feeding them clean outside ball to this stage of their careers either. I reckon we’ll see substantial growth in Banks and Clarke in particular next year, if they stay healthy. But we’ll see.
Clarke is coming off his second knee reco. He is long shot to make an AFL career

Does anyone know much about Boxshall? As in, is he a good footballer?

I ask, as his combine testing was pretty terrific. **but can he play?**

Entirely possible that YouTube has put together a very uninspiring highlight clip for Moraes and Algar, perhaps they have hidden talents, but if that’s what’s left on the board I would be taking the ruckman or trading out and waiting for the rookie draft.

We played it safe with our long-term vision for the game while taking risks on the individual selections within that safe broader vision.

The first round revealed that Richmond is committed to the idea that an optimised future of AFL will continue to include the same number of talls as today. If that's our vision, then we were smart to recruit a bag of talls early in the rebuild.

Now, some people believe the future is small. Even the #1 contested marking player in the competition only takes 1 contested mark per half of football. Only 2 CMs per game. They rarely influence finals. Most GF goals are kicked in general play from I50 handball chains or from shorter, intentional kicks to players in space. Short players can mark those balls. So, some argue in favour of abandoning the "kick it long to a tall player" strategy entirely.

The second argument for tall players is that you still need to bring the ball to ground to prevent the opposition from taking intercept marks (which are highly damaging as a fast counter attack). However, in a Grand Final setting, medium players like Townsend and Caddy have succeeded at this task, so height isn't a prerequisite. There's still merit to some height helping to nuetralise their intercept defenders. But still, there's nothing forcing us to kick it to packs I50, and how much should we invest in what is effectively a modern day "tagger" for their best defender?

Anyway, we took the traditional approach and have done a flawless job within that paradigm. It's probably for the best. If we took an extreme view regarding the future of the game, then we'd risk ruining this rebuild on a direction that's only been tested in spurts. It's interesting to think about, but now that we've shown our hand, I'll back them in. Go Tiges!

No one should be judging our draft in 12 months time.
The talls will take time, the guys with injury concerns might take time and the 2 mids we drafted both present at types who need a couple of years to really show their potential.
Very true however people will be judging it after next years preseason game(s)!

Next year we are bottom 4, grabbing a Berry probably doesn't change that outcome. The issues you have identified should have been addressed by trading up, that to me was always the best play instead of grabbing two players with huge injury question marks. I also suggested Tauru at 6 because you effectively get a swingman with significant forward upside, that's an excellent way to mitigate risk and avoid a tall forward bust. Gut says Faull would have been available down the order, but even if he gets taken we have other options to grab a tall forward.

This is how I would have played it to address your concerns as well -

1. Lalor
2. Smith
6. Tauru

10 & 11 traded to move into pole position, Saints had their pick on the table, we could have stooged North no problem.

The remaining picks could have been a combination of Faull, Armstrong, Whitlock, Sims & Dobson. If Faull goes early we switch the focus to another tall.
We have definitely gone for high risk high reward so only time will tell if we have got it wrong or not. However taking Tauru wouldn’t have improved the situation either, he also has a poor injury record over the last 2 years. He could also be classed as high risk high reward.

Alright to be sarcastic/cynical about things but we got an exclusive cross to Geish at the club function post draft and when asked what the biggest surprise at who was available at our pick it was Armstrong who we rated in the 5-7 category also getting Norths future 1st was a bonus for future planning.
Also said Lalor CLEARLY # 1 ranked and Smillie at 6 and an easy button to push, have followed his progress for years.
Don' t get me wrong mate, I was very pleased he slid so far and we grabbed him.

I was just amused when Shifter came out with the line that is trotted out at every draft and a few of us on here get a bit of a laugh at.

No sarcastic or cynical intentions

True, they discussed his back last night, that's a potential snag in the road.

Among the hubris of a big night for the Tigers, let's not forget how horribly Essendon's evening turned out.

While we hope that our deal for North's F1 gives us a top pick next season, the Bombers have here-and-now made an unequivocal mess of their hand.

In my opinion, giving up pick #9 to cover a bid that never came warrants someone getting the sack.

They were played like a fiddle. Embarrassing.
No, no one from Essendon should get the sack, life time tenure to all of them

Can someone explain why Port gave away pick 46 to WC to move up from 16 to 15 ? Surely WC would have ensured they didn't nab their target Allan, and if Port agreed, why do the trade?
I think it was because Freo were also trying to get WC pick to nab Berry.

Blair said it correctly we a recruiting for a premiership team. Looks like dons into our pick 28 for a first rd and pick in the forties they want Shanahan.

Shifter I agree, he thinks everyone is a star but when said by Geisch & Blair in separate interviews I will take them at their word as there was no need for spin last night.
Cheers

I don't know mate. From my pov, and what was conveyed at the club's event, it was more about taking the player we had listed as the best at the pick, regardless of injury concerns. Giesh Jnr also mentioned how all of the players (including Bill & Ted 3's Jonty Joins the Band) were very high quality individuals, as well as great talents.
