500K extra for that hack? / Ben Holland sues Richmond [Merged]

Re: 500K extra for that hack?

I was at work when this broke through on the footy show. I didnt get the full story , just bits and pieces. Heard Richo being questioned , wasnt convincing i thought for some reason.

All this time we have had goes at other clubs. Cheats etc.

First of all if true, the past administration has alot to answer for. Frawley for one who made it public he considered Ben not loyal to be considering leaving the tigers. He ended up staying, no wonder. Casey's involvement ?

Secondly , how on earth should we and have paid him that much? Kama, he did his knee the year after and two years later was traded to the dees and where is he now?

Thirdly, no money was exchanged. Promises and heresay but Ben. He states though that he has proof. Written?

Fourthly, if proven , and we are stripped of draft picks, fined etc , this would make me so sick. Not only me but so many of us here.

5) WHERE other players offered any incentives ? Brown comes to mind as he chose us over other clubs.

6) Poor form by Ben now. What he cant get a game, not getting paid much these days and does this now !

I am just shocked to tell you. I hope the truth comes out. If we have done wrong, gee, i guess we should be punished. This would do my head in and send us further behind, especially in the event we finish near the bottom and eligible for a pick.

Cheats never prosper i was always told. We may never take the high moral ground again.

Re: 500K extra for that hack?

Go away, Ben. You hurt us enough with your ineptitude on the park. You belonged on the bench, if that, and now you have the gall to take us to the (court) bench.

Does seem incredulous that Casey would do such a thing. Though, the yellow and black makes us all do wacky things.

Re: 500K extra for that hack?

Hard to beleive that any team we've put together over the past ten years could have put us anywhere near the salary cap.

Staggering.

I think we're in some massive strife here. You cant help but see some Carlton like penalties, and lets be honest, if we're found guilty, then we probably deserve them. No doubt we will, its the Richmond way!

At best, we'll be in trouble for our dealings with Ben. At worst, every contract signed under CC reign of terror will be looked into.

Re: 500K extra for that hack?

However, where is the line in assisting a work mate with a good deal or some advice?

Why cant CC give property advice or have players buy into his developments? He cant give them property, but surely he can network and give advice to a friend?

Did Buckley ever have a contract with Channel 9?

Does Judd have a contract with VISY?

Re: 500K extra for that hack?

I would guess Ben would have approached him via phone & email before he would of taken legal action. Casey is a dirty rotten business man that has many skeletons in the closet I hope he gets his arse dragged through the hot coals.

Re: 500K extra for that hack?

If all this is true, then-How far back can the afl go in regards to salary cap breaches?
-Can the afl punish holland as well?
-Can the crows be investigated for offering him that much? :)
-What can be done to casey, and anyone else involved, if they are no longer at the club?
- If there are players at the moment who have had a similar deal, what will happen to them and their contracts.
-If there are past players who have had similar deals, what happens with them?

Re: 500K extra for that hack?

Every club offers players future employment opportunities.

No one has said that Richmond was giving Holland a property. He was going to be sold a property that they say will go up in value - every real estate agent says that. There are rich board members at every club offering similar opportunities.

How was Nathan Buckley working on the footy show any different to Ben Holland possibly working at a Clinton Casey aligned podiatry clinic.

If anyone sees Holland around give it to him. Hope he plays for Melbourne against us later this year.

Re: 500K extra for that hack?

Unbelievable. What kind of a two bit organisation is this?

He was a hopeless player- had one good season at CHB and we then offer him the world to stay.

We could have got Kane Johnson for him, thereby not wasting our first round draft pick on him a couple of years later.

We are an absolute joke. If we lose draft picks etc out of this then don't expect us to climb up the ladder any time soon.

Re: 500K extra for that hack?

I bet Carlton and Chris Judd will be nervous right now

You know this how exactly? Sounds like a slanderous statement to me?

Many here would be surprised just how much cash Casey still tips into the club. He never asks for recognition or publicity.

If what's being stated is true then I'm guessing we're not on our pat malone.

Re: 500K extra for that hack?

I'm sorry but who decided Ben Holland was worth rorting the cap for? :help

Just when we think it can't get much worse... SURPRISE! Sucked in yes it can! :duh

From what Brian Waldron said on SEN this morning the tigers at least had to disclose related party type transactions like this even if they didn't strictly fall under the salary cap. Waldron also said that this is worse than what Carlton did which is patently ridiculous considering Carlton probably rorted the salary cap since its inception, sounds like he carries a grudge against the Tigers.

Nevertheless if true it is illegal, and could affect the club for years.

There was something reported last year about clubs offering under the table deals to players which circumvented the salary cap.

Holland sues over Tiger deal (realfooty)

Holland sues over Tiger deal
Thomas Arup | April 4, 2008

VETERAN Melbourne player Ben Holland is suing his former club, Richmond, and former Tiger president Clinton Casey for lost "business and investment opportunities" that he claims he never received in a 2001 agreement that may have breached the AFL salary cap.

In a statement of claim filed in the Supreme Court of Victoria, dated September 27, 2007, Holland also alleges similar "opportunities" were offered to other Richmond players and officials "including business opportunities in property developments with which Casey was directly and indirectly involved such as the Sandhurst project".

The statement says that in October 2001, Casey, a property developer, in the presence of then Tigers coach Danny Frawley, offered inducements that would compensate him for the $530,000 difference between a contract offered by Adelaide, also in that month.

The allegations, which were raised on Channel Nine's The Footy Show last night, may mean Richmond contravened AFL salary cap regulations, for which the club can be fined and lose draft picks and premiership points.

According to the statement, the inducements were offered at a meeting with Casey and Frawley on October 6, 2001, at Koko's restaurant at the Crown Casino and that the "opportunities" were later "confirmed in writing on or about 16 October, 2001", a copy of which Holland says he possesses.

The Age last night tried to contact Casey. He is believed to be overseas and could not be reached. AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou said late last night that he "had no reaction".

Richmond said in a statement issued last night: "No formal claim has been served upon the club. RFC is currently awaiting legal advice in respect of these matters and we have notified the AFL of these claims.

"Once legal advice has been received this information will be made available to the AFL."

In early October 2001, Richmond offered the out-of-contract Holland $800,000 over three years. Shortly afterwards, the Crows offered him $1.33 million over three years.

In the statement of claim, Holland alleges that Casey offered the following "business and investment opportunities" to compensate him for the monetary difference between the two offers:

■ Involvement in a Sandhurst property development in which Holland would be allocated selected blocks of land for $180,000 before the land was released for sale to the public, plus similar opportunities in other property developments.

■ An arrangement for Holland to provide podiatry services — Holland is a qualified podiatrist — at aged care facilities in Victoria in which Casey was involved.

■ An arrangement for Holland to acquire a large parcel of shares in a particular company whose shares were expected to increase.

Holland finished sixth in the Tigers' 2001 best and fairest count in a season where Richmond finished third.

Holland injured his knee in April 2002 and was cut from the Tigers' list in September 2003 and subsequently traded to Melbourne on the basis that Richmond would pay Holland the difference between the two contracts for season 2004.

Holland maintains the business and investment opportunities never eventuated, apart from $4000 in podiatry services.

He is suing for $530,000, which he claims is the difference between the Adelaide offer and the one he accepted at Richmond.

Casey quit as the president of Richmond Football Club at the end of 2005 to concentrate on his business, the Casey Group, which develops property including luxury aged-care facilities. Casey and his wife Leslie founded the company in 1988.

The case has similarities to that of former Carlton duo Stephen Silvagni and Craig Bradley, who, at the urging of the club, came forward with information about promised monetary entitlements outside the salary cap, which were never paid.

In 2002, Carlton was fined $987,000, disqualified from receiving priority picks and barred from the first two rounds of the national draft for two years.

Speaking on The Footy Showlast night, Richmond forward Matthew Richardson said he was never offered "opportunities" by Casey, nor had he heard of the allegations until yesterday afternoon.

The Casey era lingers on. I wonder if Miller was present.

Hopefully they'll look into Patrick Smith's property portfolio as well.

Re Miller, no he wasn't, he started in 2002.

Re Patrick Smith, Heh glad I'm not the only one suss about him and Casey.

Frawley, typical, hopefully he will be raked over the coals for this as well.

Re: 500K extra for that hack?

Just when you think things are on the up watch this cause havoc.

This is just the type of PR issue that the AFL will come down on like a tonne of bricks. This will blow up and have serious ramifications not only for the club but the industry.

At the very least it Will be a massive fine, could be draft picks taken away.

Why wouldn't we just let Holland walk, do a deal. Just goes to show how little of a clue we had about list management and who to place value on.
