Changes V GC

Aarts. The delisting cannot come quick enough. If he’s not on the list they can’t pick him. At least they didn’t throw Parker in there as well.
I think aarts still has another year on his contract, so can’t see him delisted. Thought he and stack were way too good for vfl a couple of weeks ago. Reckon he has earned his recal (unlike George who is still being gifted games).

It will be wet and slippery.
The footy will be like a cake of soap.
We love playing on that ground.
Rankine not playing is a massive bonus

Should get one or two dry quarters with a 4.30pm start.

Wouldn't be surprised if Soldo has hamstring awareness around half time before the due sets in and we bring a mid on for the 2nd half which could be dewy (not Stuey Dewy)

These are the worst changes of 2022.

We will not win with Aarts and Castagna in the side. We are unlucky with forced outs and the unavailability of Stack, but we have selected a losing side.

Which is unfortunate with the season on the line.

Over the last 2 (2021 and 2022) years our win loss with Aarts in the side is 10-1-15 (win rate of 38%).

With Aarts out of the side, we are 8-3 (win rate of 73%).

Not sure he solves any problems.

I reckon we will.

Aarts get a game when we're undermanned. We lose more when we're undermanned. Do we lose because Aarts plays or because the team is weakened to the point Aarts plays?

If the team is much weaker when he plays, that says something about what he offers when he plays.

He has also been selected in 70% of games over the last 2 years, so it's not just about team fitness.

My friend and I used to sit at games and talk about the Aarts Super Highway.

This was when opposition played through Aarts opponent.
It was the fastest and easiest route the opposition could use to get the ball from defence to offense.

Get ready to see a complete degradation of our ability to slow or contain the opponent.

To be fair Aarts has been good in the VFL of late, at least he is getting in on the basis of performances, I'm still not convinced. But how Castagna got his spot back I don't know.

Miller is a good pick, he has been playing well, time he got a chance and this is the perfect opportunity. He needs to play like he has been in the VFL, attack from defence. Hope Miller does well.

All the games to the end of the year are must win, not least this one.

I know exactly what you mean, as I said earlier I've been anti-Aarts longer than most. But the team is weaker more because Cotchin, Martin, Vlastuin, Lambert and Balta are missing than because Aarts is in. And the fact is he's the best option. It would be the Sonsie Superhighway (minus the inside tackles and grunt that at least Aarts will give but plus ball use when someone gave it to him) or the RCD Warp Drive. Dow's been struggling to get a kick before last week.

We'd all prefer one of the younger blokes to have demanded a spot but fact is they haven't.

GC are a contested ball side more than a running side. Aarts is in to tackle.

Aarts is only in the side when good players aren’t playing due to form or injury. Correlation and causation two different things.

It a real concern that Aarts is preferred to all of the kids in the twos. We are playing to win though so it's a clear message to them to get moving.
The concern is that it shows that our young mids are not up to it. RCD is gone I reckon; as is Will Martyn. Dow may not be far behind them. Our drafting of mids in past few years has been poor.

Also if the conditions aren't great it does make some sense to pick mature, seasoned bodies over weaker ones. Have to back the coaching staff in that they know what they're doing..

I think we all agree selection should be a meritocracy. If yes then Aarts is a no brainer, been probably our best/most consistent player at VFL level.

Aside from this week, that's simply not true.

He has been considered best 22 by the coaches for the vast majority of the last 2 seasons. He was selected in round 1 this year!

As I said, he has been selected in 70 per cent of games. We have not been undermanned in 70% of games. In that 70% we have won 38%. In the 30% he wasn't selected, we won 73%.

IT's not the be all end all. But at the least, it shows he's not a useful player.

Win/loss aside, he is simply too athletically limited to be a contributor at AFL level. We are a weaker team when he plays, regardless of who else is available.

I get it. We are unlucky this week to have a lot of unavailabilities in the same position.

Stack's injury is particularly annoying.

I would have played Cumberland and had Bolton as a permanent mid. Or used MRJ as a pinch hitter mid.
