Another boring BBL game last night. I’m not sure low scores and a lack of boundaries was what T20 cricket was meant to bring to the table.

That continuous Freddie Mercury call to liven up the bored crowds is becoming terribly cringeworthy now.

Anyone got advice on best seats to view cricket at SCG? Public area preferably with mostly shade?

See my man Stoinis has shown his class for the Stars against the Renegades, 78 off 49 balls and 2 wickets. Get him in the test side, he has X factor is spades.

Warne was drooling all over him last night. I think he may have taken Liz Hurley’s spot in the great man’s affections.

I too am a fan.
He should have been in the side the last year learning the ropes while we regroup.
Perfect oppportunity missed while the same old failing players were selected.

I agree entirely.

The Age saying Finch dropped and Labushchagne will bat at 3

i am shocked to see a guy who has always been an average 1st class cricketer struggle in Test cricker.
just as shocked as i was to see a guy who has shown he is not up to Test cricker as a batsman or bowler and finally got dropped for poor performances and who has not been in great form struggle when brought back into the team.
and almost as shocked as i have been to see a 36yo who has shown over his career to be a mediocre test cricketer continue to reach those heights of mediocrity.

i do expect to Labushchagne to succeed though, despite failing in his last tests, getting dropped then struggling in Shield cricket. he should be full of confidence.

Langer- “Try being a selector at the moment,” Langer told reporters. “We’ve got to be careful not to reward poor performances but … it’s not as if the guys are absolutely banging the door down.

“Most of our batters knocking on the door are averaging in the 30s (in the Sheffield Shield).”

Potential test cricketers averaging over 40 this season:
Wade- 63.44 (ave 43 in 17/18)
Burns- 47.20 (aver 57 in 17/18)
Stoinis- 42.57 (also taken 10 wickets at 25)
Maxwell- 42.00 (ave 50 in 17/18)

thats 4 guys who deserve a game before Finch, S.Marsh, M. Marsh and Labushchagne.

To be fair S.Marsh was tearing up the Shield this summer as well.

Good point though. Wade in particular is panels ahead of the next best on performance. We have a phobia of picking guys when confidence is sky high.

Tending to wait until out of form before picking them.

Will post more on leysy's views tomorrow, but article from Geeves bears some truth.

From Tom O'Neill on twitter. He points out that Langer quotes stats when they don;t support his argument. But the media don't seem to challenge him. The table shows Shield averages of the 8 bats in the test squad (bold) and the next best 12

No real surprise our batting is schizen.

If this happens you know the selectors and Langer have completely lost it.

Langer loves all rounders, the WA shield side had 3 or 4 of them in their 11 on a lot of occasions. No wonder they were a very poor shield side in the six years Langer was at the helm.

Yeah saw that on Twitter JB. Very interesting isn't it.

A couple of guys do skew upwards significantly with improved form over the past couple of years i.e. Harris and Labuschagne.

But the basis does hold firm. The selectors play favourites and especially Wade and Burns who have backed up longish careers with better numbers than their peers with outstanding form recently are being overlooked is crazy.

How Finch can open the batting ahead of Burns on both technique and numbers beggars belief.

Maxwell is the other one that appears unlucky. Against him compared to the two above are that he just hasn't had much red ball cricket to push his case forward and when he has this year he struggled compared to Wade/Burns.

Leysy knows being a national selector is a thankless task and over time they get a rough bargain on here and in the media. Also understand it is natural to have some favourites when picking teams. The big concern is we seem to be putting a lot of faith in players with large technical flaws i.e. Finch, Head and Handscomb with only reasonable numbers.

We also don't seem to value players that can work the ball. We have so many four or dot batsman. The good players work good balls for one. We continually dot up until frustration seeps in and we play a big shot, sometimes for four, sometimes out. Marsh x 2, Head, Finch and not so much lately but still guilty is Khawaja.

The selectors don't seem to value this skill.

Leysy has been harsh on the No-Show but it is a reason we should revisit him. He does have that skill. Only rider is because he bowls same style as Lyon his bowling almost becomes moot. It's a batsman or nothing.

For reasons above Brydon Coverdale's team (Cricinfo) reads far better:

1 Joe Burns, 2 Marcus Harris, 3 Usman Khawaja, 4 Travis Head, 5 Matthew Wade, 6 Glenn Maxwell, 7 Tim Paine, 8 Pat Cummins, 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Nathan Lyon, 11 Josh Hazlewood

Leysy would actually swap S.Marsh for Head as well. But happy none the less.

Would also explore dropping Starc. He's lost his swing thus ability to knock over decent batsman and just about the confidence of his captain. On thin ice.

Lastly on this rant is the schedule which doesn't help. As Geeves outlined very difficult grounding our players have to come in from BBL ATM.

Solution - play the Shield in it's entirety from start Sept to Xmas. The kick Big Bash off from there, then have JLT Cup to finish up. Grounds may be some issue early but surely we can sort.

Anyway that's leysy's rambling 2c.

Lastly when are Victoria actually going to contribute to the national team with the willow.

The list going back to Deean Jones reads:

Finch
Handscomb
Harris (WA)
Maxwell
Quiney
McDonald
Hodge
White
Elliott
Phillips

In 30 years Elliott with 21 Tests the most successful. About time a state this size started pulling it's weight.

Hopefully Pucovsky can get himself right and change that, he has the right cricket mindset to. Hold out big hopes for him.
