Cricket

Just turned on. Why was Maxwell allowed to bowl 11 overs?

Edit: Never mind, cricinfo had him at 1/66 off 11 well after the innings finished, but they’ve since changed it.

A bit of a furore in the IPL with Ashwin mankading Buttler.
I'm surprised to see most fans on social media (and indeed even most Indian fans) being critical of Ashwin.
"not in the spirit", "he should have warned him".

This is one aspect of cricket I have never, ever understood.
I consider myself the most traditional of red-ball cricket fans, love the history of the game, etc. etc. Traditionalist from way back.
But it's a mystery to me this one.

The batsman should simply wait until the ball has been bowled. End of story. And if he doesn't, he's trying to gain an unfair advantage and he's fair game. Run him out.
All this nonsense about delivery strides and Ashwin deliberately stopping and waiting for Buttler to move out of his crease ....
So what? Don't run until the ball has left the bowler's hand and you'll be OK.

I agree with Lisa Sthalekar's take:

The ball should have been called a dead ball.

I've never understood the angst about mankading either. Nothing better as a young fella than mankading your mates in a game of backyard cricket.

Imagine if Greg Chappell told his little brother to do it against Neu Zulland all those years ago. Our Kiwi cousins would have exceeded from the brotherhood for sure. :o

Depends how its done, in this case the batter was in the crease at the point of delivery, Ashwin simply didn't bowl and in fact paused, which is why it should have been called dead ball.

In these circumstances tradition says you should warn the batsman first, and after that he's fair game. I recall Alan Hurst running out the Pakistan #11 in Perth without a warning, which prompted all sorts of bad blood including the 'handled ball' dismissal of Andrew Hillditch.

There was one a few years ago which prompted some debate here, in which I supported the bowler, but in that case the batsman was taking an obscene liberty and was on the march before the bowler had even reached the stumps.

Ashwin was probably better advised to give a warning but I'm not going to be too critical. If we have a few more of these, it might de-stigmatise it for the bowler.

BTW I didn't think the rules permitted a Mankad once the bowler enters his delivery stride?

This was the MCC's response when Buttler was Mankaded in 2014.

"The unanimous view of the [MCC] committee was that if the non-striker is out of his ground earlier than allowed in either the Laws of Cricket or the International Playing Conditions, then he can have no complaints should he be dismissed in this manner. Furthermore, the committee believes it was not against the Spirit of Cricket to uphold such an appeal, and urges batsmen to ensure they do not try to gain an unfair advantage by moving out of their crease before the appropriate time."

Fair enough Ian

Just saw this, really quite poor from Ashwin. You are spot on, at delivery stride Butler is OK, Ashwin clearly never intended to deliver the ball. Should have been a dead ball.

Lost respect for Ashwin, not that I ever had much for him. An average bowler anywhere but in favourable conditions.

Good start by the Vics in the shield final, after winning the toss and batting they are 0/58.
I hope they don't underate nsw bowler Conway, he's impressed every time I've seen him.

Went to the CA website prepared to have to watch their 3rd world stream of it but they want you to sign up to Kayo to watch it. Thought I’d see if Fox were showing and luckily they are. As a dedicated cricket channel should.

Vics 3/113. Copeland got Gotch out but replays showed it was a no ball and it’s the not the first no ball that was not called today.

How hard is it for umpires to watch the front foot? We saw it it regularly during the summer.

Just not good enough from the umpires.

Short's looking very iffy, he just needs to get through the next 30 minutes or so. A crucial partnership this one with Pattinson coming in next at 7.
.
Harris just dropped at about a third slip, 4/134
