Waugh wouldn't even make the semis. Chappell, Harvey, Border, Hayden, Gilchrist ahead of him.
Of that group, Gilly was undoubtedly my favorite - and polar opposite to Waugh in that he was always team first. Despite that, he averaged 57+ in his first 50 tests at a strike rate of 90. An absolute match winner and could do it in a session.

Bancroft with only scores of 33 and 7 in the tour game, Harris 62 n.o overnight.

It’ll be interesting to see how Jofra Archer goes in the second test. It sounds like the Poms think he’s gunna run through the Aussies with his pace.

Also interested in our line up. Does Bancroft get another gig? And does Starc or Hazelwood play for Siddle?

Archer hasnt played Tests before so likely wont have the conditioning to bowl for long hard spells.

Play him out with a straight bat for 4 - 6 over spells, plenty of leaving the ball just let him wear himself out.

Once hes tired he will be easy pickings.

Old mate Dan Cherny has just published an article purporting to articulate what makes Steve Smith's technique so different. Other than mentioning 'a strong bottom hand grip', he doesn't mention the grip at all. Smith's right hand is further around than I have ever seen anyone's, so much so that when he holds the bat up awaiting delivery the back of his right hand faces point, whereas for most players it would face the keeper or slips. This is a major factor in his ability to keep the ball on the ground unless he wants to go airborne. It's almost impossible for him to accidentally hit the ball in the air, and he can play that sliding back foot drive behind point off the full face of the bat without slicing it. The turn to leg, even when played from outside off, carries little risk of catching the leading edge.

Dan also makes the all-too-common mistake of calling a hook shot a pull shot. I might have to have a chat. :p
