He can't be giving that out. You could clearly see the middle and off stumps outside Stokes' front leg. The ball's drifting to leg and clips the front pad. It could have been hitting leg stump at best, and the batsman gets the benefit of the doubt.

Ball tracker showing it hitting middle and leg is rubbish. A ****-stir.
I'll need to look at it again.
Watching it as it happened in real time it looked very close to me. I agree Hawke Eye is dodgy, but in this instance i thought it was ok.

It doesn't worry me, but the ball tracker I saw had it smashing into leg, not middle and leg, which is what it looked like to the naked eye. I don't really blame the ump though, big crowd, not hitting middle as you say, general jumping at shadows with DRS, but the Payne review in hope was inexcusable.

This link probably won't stay up long. Have a look where Lyon releases the ball from, bowling right arm around - it's come from outside the return crease! He virtually has to turn it square to hit the stumps from there.

Middle and leg my arse.

I'd be ropeable if Australia lost a Test in those circumstances. Wilson had a shocker in the 2nd Test but he wasn't bad in this one. It was a sensible decision.

Here it is on the HS website (paywalled)

Also, and I’m not going to pin the loss on Harris for dropping a difficult catch at third man, but he is not a Test standard fielder. He was responsible for a number of mis-fields during the match which ended up being costly. If you don’t bowl and you’re ordinary in the field, you need to be making a shitload of runs to justify your place.

So, the Tiges are in the finals hey?

Been saying for a while now ball tracking is just confected *smile*.

1981 ashes all over again.

Win the first test, draw the second and lose the unloseable third to a brilliant innings from their all rounder.

We won’t recover from this

Perhaps the best innings of all time? The patience he showed early coupled with the devastating late hitting was amazing.

Will take a miracle to hold the ashes from here.

As noted by others the short bowling to Leach was ridiculous. Just gave him a free pass. And we needed a bowler who could change the pace of the ball - as they do at the death in 20 20 games.

Leysy will be disappointed, got nothing from the Tasmanian's Brierly or Wade.

Although i think we can bounce back. Smith will be back with ML so our batting will be better. Despite some of the tripe bowled on the final day our bowling attack is excellent.

If Paine couldn't see that the ball from Cummins had pitched a foot outside leg stump he needs to get his eyes checked. He needs to stand up to the bowlers, they think every appeal is out.
Apart from that wasted review, Lyon fumbling the ball on the run out is something that you'd see at recess at primary school. He needs to get his eyes checked too.

all is not lost. We get the best batsman in the work back next game and Labuschagne has shown he is a test player. As much as I want back Pattinson as a proud Victorian he needs to be dropped for the next test, just bowls too short and is predictable. I’d have Hazelwood, Siddle and Starc as our bowlers for the next test.
As Michael Holding said why are bowlers not bowling Yorkers anymore?

A calamitous last 10 overs or so from the Aussies.

Seems Stokes was the only one out there who didn't panic.

From memory Cummins didn't think it should be reviewed and Paine sent it upstairs?

We need to do better than Paine. He is part of a hopeless batting order and his captaincy isn't good enough to get him a game solely on that.

Despite all of the final day drama, if we had have made an additional 50 runs in the 2nd innings we would have won. What will get overlooked is we made only 179 and 246, with 3 50s for the test, 2 by the one player. Our batting is pathetic.

Yep

And that was after we bowled England for 67 in the 1st innings!!!!
Paine has done a good job at a difficult time since becoming Captain, and i'm record as saying that it would harsh if he didn't finish the series as Captain.
If we had Carey who's the best wicket keeper batsmen in Australia and not in the squad, i could be swayed that Paine should go.
It's like Healy and Gilchrist all over, Gilchrist was kicking the door down in ODI's, and we all know what happened when the selectors finally relented.

We've played to a plan all series. Maybe the plan didn't take into account that the bowlers were tired and the wicket had slowed up and flattened out.

We still had chances to win the game and didn't take them. The pressure got to all of them, including the skipper. Just have to dip your lid to Stokes.

Paine's incessant, compulsive appealing evokes the culture of the subcontinent. While I disagree with ball tracker, it's not a bad thing if the match review results in him pulling his head in.

Couldn't stop watching it last night. Was glad I did because it's one of those innings that will be talked about for a long time. Sure we had a couple of screw-ups but you can't take anything away from Stokes. Barely acknowledged his 50. When he reached the ton it was very subdued. He was in that zone and it was something special.

I'm not 100% sure but I think Cummins didn't want to use the review; it was Paine's call.

But yeah the Lyon miss on the run out was absolute amateur stuff.

It wasn't Pattinson bowling the short and wide tripe for most of that last wicket stand. It was Hazelwood and Cummins. Pattinson got the last wicket LBW with a yorker.
