Cricket

Australian Cricket has been through a few evolutions of funding over the years since WSC.

Initially one day cricket subsidised everything, West Indies tours were the only one that was profitable, then after they became a shambles South Africa and then England bankrolled the losses from every other tour.

Then the juggernaut of India arrived and created a river of cash, and now that river has extended to whatever Indian people want to watch.

When New Zealand hosted India in 2020 they made a decade of funding from the Indian TV rights alone. They just sold the rights to show all their men and women's cricket in India until 2026 to Amazon Prime in a deal that must be worth in the hundreds of millions.

It's basically free money for cricket and the reason one day cricket still exists.
Definitely 1.5Billion people is like 56 times the viewing audience of little 'ol Oz. Not a bad little deal they signed off on ;)

1. Sony Sports Network is both televising and streaming England’s tour of Australia 2022 for the Indian audiences. Australia-England first ODI will be televised on Sony Sports TEN 5.

2. July 2022 - Cricket Australia strikes seven-year, US$250m Star India rights deal. Deal includes all international cricket, as well as the BBL and WBBL until 2030.

3.. July 2022 - Disney Star has acquired the rights to broadcast all men's and women's international cricket played in Australia into India on a seven-year deal, Cricket Australia announced today.

The deal, which commences in 2023-24, will see Disney Star televise all internationals matches as well as the KFC Big Bash League and Weber Women's Big Bash League into the world's largest cricket market.

Disney Star will take over from Sony who have held the Australian rights since the 2017-18 season.

“We are delighted to announce this new association with Disney Star from season 2023/24 onwards," Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley said in a statement.

“Disney Star is synonymous with the game in India and we look forward to working with them to showcase the outstanding cricket played in Australia every summer.

“The magnitude of this association is a testament to the enduring rivalry and respect that exists between Australian and Indian teams, the excitement and popularity of WBBL and BBL, and the high regard of Australian cricket in India and global markets more broadly.

“There was significant interest in our rights and we are very grateful to our current rights-holder Sony for their partnership which will continue throughout this season.”

In June Disney Star also won the TV broadcast rights for the Indian Premier League's next five seasons, which cost them a touch over $3 billion USD.

“Cricket Australia represents some of the best content that the world of cricket has to offer, be it the standard of cricket played, the popularity of Aussie Cricketers, the rivalries and narratives or the context of playing in front of expressive crowds and in tough conditions," said Disney Star's Head of Sports, Sanjog Gupta

“Disney Star has been delighting millions of Indian fans by showcasing marquee cricket across our linear and digital platforms.

"Some of the most memorable moments for Indian fans have been produced in Australia and we look forward to elevating many more such moments with our unique brand of story-telling, programming, local activations and tech-enabled experiences in association with Cricket Australia.”

Jeez Langer can carry on and sook.

I'm biased here but JL is easily one of the most fiercely loyal people I have ever known.

If you were ever in a battle you would know he had your back until the end. I'm not close to him by any means but in hard times in my life he has always been amongst the first to reach out and I know first hand of many other people for whom he has done the same.

The fact he is so aggrieved by what happened for me just confirms that it stunk.

Interesting comments from Buttler here. Whilst I take on TBR's points around income from India, whats the point if the players aren't engaged in a series. If they have a series that doesn't go towards ICC Championship points, it isn't for the World Cup, frankly whats the point. These games become meaningless. If they are meaningless to players, this is where you get ridiculously one-sided results like we've just seen in this 3 ODI series.

Yep. Money is not an end in itself. If only it was that simple.

This is where modern sport has layers of complexity. You have the traditional cricketing values of big crowds, long series with finals, schedules run to maximise attendance and performance, the best players playing every game and so on, which have to now go hand in hand with the reality of maximising commercial value. The players want to play in big games and important games, but they also want to be paid huge amounts of money.

It's a bit like in the AFL when people will mock GWS for having no crowds and being funded by the AFL and suggest they shouldn't exist, but if you look at what the creation of the 8th game brought in in terms of TV money it funds itself 3 times over.

Interesting analysis of Langer and his recent comments in this Peter Fitzimons piece:

Coaches get sacked all the time and there are crap bossess in all vocations. Langer can't seem to handle it and of course, his ex-teammates aren't helping by sniping from afar.

Yeah CA letting Langer go was handled (typically) appaullingly by Hockley.

In his typical fashion it was done in a weak, spineless manner.

Saying that, Langer needs to move on.

Also great to see Tasmania hand Victoria's arse to them at the G in the Shield match this week.

Quietly building a good team/season. Vaughn is a good, well regarded coach.

It's looks like it will get worse.
The schedule will shift to suit India.
Is that why day night tests are promoted, to suit the Indian timezones?

Many ODIs and T20 played in junk time without crowds so the players will have to be doing it only for the money

The Vic's (after winning 4 of the last 8 Sheffield shield titles) are blooding a lot of youth in Chandrasinghe, Kellaway (nephew of Duncan btw), Sutherland, Harper, O'Neill, Elliott and McLure from this game alone then there's Crone, Evans, Fraser-McGurk, Parker, Perry and Harvey and possibly Pucovski. And of course the Vics supplied the PMs XI with Harris, Hanscomb and Murphy.

Tassie are rolling out with the aged ex Victorian in Siddle, the aged ex NSW Bird and the aged Wade, the overweight park cricketer in Freeman, perennial state level guys in the ex QLDer in McDermott, ex NSW Silk, Beau Webster, ex NSW Jake Doran and ex NSW Ellis.

There’s Caleb Jewell at 25 yrs old but a FC batting average under 30 and ex NSW Tim Ward at age 24 who still have time to develop. So it looks like Tassie aren’t blooding much youth, playing a lot of old guys, playing a lot of bit players from interstate. In a bit of no man’s land IMO, not supplying future quality National players and too much mediocrity to win a shield.
