Essendon = Entitlement

I doubt if Hird will get appointed but if he does it’s because of the “feels” and the hope of redemption and the hope of a beautiful Hollywood ending of Hird holding up the premiership cup but not because he’s the best candidate.

Hird was a brilliant footballer. The way he could extract the football from contests and be gone in a flash was outstanding.

I felt sad that his football ability has been buried under his coaching balls up

Then I slap myself and went back to the baying crowd.

There is dumb and then there Is Essendon. The golden boy syndrome is so sickening to everyone outside the club and a fair few within I suspect but the powerbrokers in Dodo and Sheedy want it to happen thus it will. Everyone will know the whole process has been a sham. As to Hirds culpability in the whole supplements saga, he was the one who “worked” with Shane Charters and thanked him in his 97 Brownlow speech. Charters was a bodybuilder/trainer but his methods of training were well established by that stage. So to think that golden boy went to see him to do some gym work and nothing else is laughable.
An article from the past is an interesting revisit:

Oh and in the article it said Hird did Ballet at school so maybe Hird went to Charter do reacquaint himself with that lost art;) :mhihi

I now question Hirds ability as a player. He and a few other AFL players had Shane Carter as a "strength and nutrition adviser"
Shane Carter is a self confussed steriods/peds abuser and supplier and helped Dank supply his drugs from Asia.
Back in the good old days when the AFL had no idea about drug testing.

I love it.

Great to see the bloke healthy, great to see him putting his hand up for the job.

Hope he gets it and does really well, for the first time ever I'll be hoping Essendon wins against the 16 other teams, and finishes runner-up.

What ever it takes

The boys are almost all back in town.
Guess who was interviewed by the bombers today
That wild-eyed druggie that had been away
Hasn't changed, had much to say
But man, I still think that coach is crazy
He was askin' if you were around
How you were, where you could be found
I told him you were livin' on skid row
And still on the gear, I'll have you know

The boys are back in town
The boys are back in town
The boys are back in town

I dont really care either way about Hird, and wouldnt care if he got a 2nd chance, but seriously if they appoint him after such little involvement in football for the past 8 years, any other applicant now for the job should vow never to work at that club.- and the AFL should not even consider any calls for assistance if they continue to prop up the ladder.
the only way he can be the best applicant for the job is if he is the only applicant for the job.
Probably he is the best candidate. The only thing that will erase the supplement scandal stigma is on field success. This will linger with them until then and it doesn't matter who coaches them. Not sure why so many people are hating on Hird who has already paid a big price for what happened 10 years ago. And as TBR has mentioned none of us really knows what took place.

Wow. Better than Phil himself.

The drugs scandal had a lot more people involved than just Hird if you ask me and a hell of a lot of them got off without any sanction.

I'm certainly not convinced that Hird will be a great coach, don't think he was very good last time and it isn't like he's been getting experience since.

But I really do wonder what this will do to Hird himself. Essendon is clearly a club with a lot of issues, not least all the coterie groups you hear about. If Hird goes back there as the golden boy and cannot get results out of what I reckon is a pretty average list, and the prospect of the list not improving much given Dodo's record, what will it do to Hird? What little I know about Hird doesn't particularly make him sound likeable but I really wonder about whether anyone is thinking of Hird's well being, if he goes back there, fails, and gets all the crap poured on him for not leading them to the promised land, I reckon it is a bit irresponsible. If they bring him back they need to provide a lot of support, oh, and a decent list might help too.

DS
If Hird has put his hand up for the job then he feels he’s ready for it.
If he isn’t then that’s on him.

He has a lot of influential (at Essendon and the media) backing him so he’ll be given every opportunity to succeed. I wouldn’t be surprised if Essendon blow the footy department salary cap to buggery and just pay the fine in his first year to give him more support than they would dream of giving anybody else.

If he falls over and turns into a basket case well… too bad soo sad

I work in the fundamental medical research sphere.
If a researcher did to just one mouse let alone a human, what hird did to 80%+ of the playing group, they would be delicensed immediately and never allowed to use animals or human subjects in their work again.
It is irrelevant what was injected. Making them sign consent forms without any information and cutting the club doctor out of the chain of command the way hird did, was beyond foolhardy. Totally inexcusable. Sackable offence if not jail time. Career-ending for leadership roles. No coming back from that in my opinion.

Spot on. I think people tend to confuse their admiration for the player with the dodgy coach. What he did as a player was heroic. What he did as a coach was unforgiveable.

I agree completely, but the person you should be referring to is Stephen Dank, not James Hird.

It's bewildering that he was allowed to work back in the afl system in coaching or in any footy capacity in coaching in all levels should never happen that's what happens when you have a governing board that sweeps things under the carpet and corrupt.
