Powerful men abusing their power and pressuring women who work for them for sex is not OK.

I just listened to a podcast on nygard. It’s truly horrific what some powerful men have been able to do for such a long period of time without consequence.

with that said that forgoing rule of law and submitting to mob justice would do far more damage than these type of aberrations IMo so it remains a vexed issue. power can pay off/scare off all sorts of people involved in the justice system to protect the accused and punish the accuser.

The solution has to be in prevention which means building respect at young age and calling out shitty behaviour. Not sure we can flick a switch but the growing awareness of what leads to this and schools starting to take action too is going to help. Attending the ‘education’ session for parents/kids last year with my son at his school - the concept of consent which was covered was certainly something that never got mentioned when I was at an all boys school as a kid. (And seems to still be an issue at some Sydney private schools too as a minimum)

Have heard attitudes expressed by young private school-educated blokes that weren't part of my school experience.

Addressing the symptoms is pointless; one is led to question where this hostility stems from, why the academic performance of boys is in freefall etc. Where is the system failing? Presumably all these kids' parents are not poor role models.

If all women loudly shouted "No!" then the system would clean itself up. Like if nobody bought drugs, the dealers would be out of business. Referring to the article, if no women did porn etc.

In the lives of modern adolescents there is this toxic combination of social media, instant communication, hard-core porn, hormones and shots. Is it any wonder there are consent issues? Society is completely off the rails!

Plenty of marriages result from relationships begun in the workplace. There is no way for a man to know whether an approach is going to be reciprocated... except to approach. Where is the line between an invitation for social company and sexual harrassment?

I bet the vast majority of militant feminists would like to control the situation and be the ones approaching men... or other women.

more seriously though I think it’s education much like seat belt use To where eventually society pulls up people who treat other people (male or female) like *smile*. E,g, My kids would tell me off if I don’t put my seat belt on.

there will always be *smile* though.

screaming and yelling won’t solve anything but can potentially raise awareness and maybe be an impetus for change / start conversations.

This improvement in educational performance is recent, in the era of feminism. It is clearly feminism having an effect. I have heard that these days women in their 20s & 30s do out earn men!

The patriarchy is a conspiracy theory. A better explanation of male success is gender differences. The basic one being that women have children. Others might be male aggression (due to high testosterone levels) coupled with a well documented male tendency toward risk taking behavior.

Not to mention a consumerist culture of instant gratification. In short, people are living for grotesque hedonistic, narcissistic aims as their central reason for being. Rather than living a life looking for a duty and purpose as one's central reason for being and hence, finding contentment from that.

This feeds into those themes you point out above.

I grew up with quite a traditionalist, conservative upbringing. Very close to (and partly raised by) grandparents. This was very much the mantra I took from that upbringing. Live humbly and live a life of mutual obligation and self sacrifice for one's family. And by extension you take this into your community life.

I am sure there are women in Holliwood who use sex to get what they want, but in the scheme of the inequality women face in Australia, the Western World, and the whole world, I would have thought it was a pretty minor issue, especially for a discussion in Australia.

Maybe there needs to be more "career women" aspiring to higher positions where they can influence senior appointments. Although you'd hope all promotions are on merit.

clearly promotions are not all on merit. there are many factors that influence, that shouldn't, and gender is a significant one.
