Yes that caused a fair bit of angst in the local peanut gallery. Anything to rile up the old north vs south chestnut.
All I can guess is that it's because of the inconvenient truth that many of my fellow southern dwellers know, but won't admit. Bellerive just isn't that good a venue for football. It has no atmosphere, and frankly, just doesn't seem to play as well as York Park. Plus Bellerive has a permanent cricket wicket (York Park doesn't).
Bellerive really was developed with cricket in mind. A specialist cricket venue. York Park had nothing but footy in mind when it was redeveloped. And although, obviously oval shaped grounds double up with both sports. The specialty focus that went into these two grounds seems to show.
Hehe. What would you do Angry? Just keep it in place because it’s the AFL?
Clearly I was a bit premature. And the AFL have pleasantly surprised me.
My wife is a Swannies fan from our time living in Sydney, so she is definitely going along to the Saturday match (Sydney vs GWS).
Unfortunately being a Saturday, one of us has to stay home in Hobart and manage the kid’s activities (sports, dancing etc) so looks like that will be me. If the game was in Hobart I would have been able to do both (manage the kids and get to the game with the wife). But being a two hour drive it unfortunately doesn’t work. Not to worry. I have had a pretty good run myself over the past few seasons heading over to Melbourne watching our beloved Tiges playing finals and leaving the wife at home to manage the kids. So it all evens out.
And I’m not one to get too upset and passionate over the whole Hobart vs Launceston civil war. Plenty of local commentary sooking that Launceston got both games, not fair…sook, sook, sook….Hobart should have got one, Launceston the other etc. Sure for selfish reasons, it would work better for the wife and I if the game was in Hobart. But like I stated in earlier posts. If one is being pragmatic about it. Launceston has the better venue.
I actually grew up in both cities/towns, hence why I don’t get too tied up in the whole north vs south rivalry. You blokes shake your heads at the divisive, parochial shortcomings in our Federation that have been exposed over the pandemic. But I despair at the whole north vs south rubbish that goes on within just our tiny island. When there were cases detected in northern Tasmania early in the pandemic. There were people in the south ready to roll out the razor wire at the 42nd parallel and make official the Cascade-Boags demarcation line and demilitarised zone, that they’ve always been itching for, to keep those filthy, diseased northerners out.
Glad that mrs PT gets to go see her beloved Swannies, that's hard to pick a result for that game. I'm tending towards Giants.
BTW love Tassie, done a few motorbike tours there and my mum and younger sister lived in Hobart for a few years. Great place. On the rivalry stuff, I guess people invent it to keep things interesting - happens all over the world.

Why have both games at Launcestion? I can't even find it on the bloody map of Tassie!

Yeah I just typed into the google search at work to try and get a map of Tassie for you. But got a call immediately from the IT people, that it set off the filter alarms regarding appropriate internet usage.
To be fair, Launceston is easily missed. It's a common mistake. Many a lady have been left unsatisfied when their clueless man misses Launceston and goes further south and straight for Hobart on the map.

There's a reason why the Libs/Nats only won about 8 seats in State Parliament and McGowan won the rest. Because West Australians approve of how he's handled this. If you want in to WA, at least be vaccinated.
Makes perfect sense to me - I hope that's applied to people who want to enter Australia too.

Brisbane being handed a pretty big finals advantage, again.
all sides going into a hard lockdown, Brisbane going to cafes, massages, and the beach.
its a pretty different prep?
I dont get why they aren't going into a finals kind of bubble?
the premiership is designed to go to the best side of the year,
not the side who has the biggest *smile* in charge of their state?

What about the doggies not wanting to play in Tassie but forced to play Essendon on a ground where they will have 80% of the crowd support and who played their recently.
How much did the bummers pay the AFL for that decision- it reaks if you ask me.
Yeah, from that perspective I reckon the Melbourne vs Brisbane final would have been a better fit for Launceston. Send the Footscray vs Essendon final to Adelaide.
Yes Melbourne vs Brisbane would appear to be the fairer choice especially as Essendon supporters seemed to outnumber the Hawks fans for that game. Western Bulldogs & Essendon game is sold out. Tickets for Swans V GWS seem to be limited so should get good numbers there as well.
You know. Fitzroy did dabble with Tasmania for a couple of seasons. And it coincided with that late 80s/early 90s era, where Tasmania put in a bid to join the AFL.
I know I am on record here as saying that the current manifestation of a Tasmanian bid only has a chance of working if it's quintessentially a Tasmanian identity from day one (like the Adelaide Crows). As in, I don't see widescale affection being shown for a relocated North Melbourne as an example. They just don't hold that sort of appeal down here.
But I'm willing to concede that a relocated Fitzroy, maybe would have. All hypothetical of course. But they seemed to have that aura about them where they were kind of everyone's second team, if you were a neutral observer. Had some really strong Tasmanian connections in that era too. Would a relocated Lions to Tasmania - rather than eviscerating them and selling the carcass to the Brisbane Bears - have been a least bad option that the Fitzroy people and Tasmanians could have lived with? Obviously we will never know. But interesting to ponder.

The other interesting point in all of that. A North-Fitzroy merger was pretty much across the line with the members of both clubs. It seemed a compromise they could at least live with. A few other clubs vetoed the idea and the AFL intervened to then broker the deal with Brisbane, is how I understand it played out.
