Whether he should or shouldn’t be inducted is up for debate I guess, but its another poor reflection on the man that he couldn’t turn up for an event that honours the games very greatest, nor even be bothered to appear on video for it.

More to it than just not being bothered. The bloke obviously has a lot of personal problems with depression, self esteem/ image. A lot of demons as they say.

Best player I've ever seen, (Young Roachy second).

Just to illustrate different rules for different folks. Wayne Carey once appeared as a character witness at an assault trial for Jason Moran, in a case where he'd nearly killed a bloke in an assault. Apart from all the people he probably killed who probably had it coming, he also once belted a bloke senseless with a steering lock on church St for cutting him off.

Ablett, maybe the best ever on the ground, hopeless off it.

Does any one here actually know the criteria for induction?
(Thought I heard reference this morning on radio that the criteria encompassed both on and off field demeanour.)

He doesnt deserve it.
Yer, he was a great player but he has lost all of my admiration for what he has done after football.
And IMO i don't think he cares if he is in the hall of fame or not.

He Isn't even showing up to the event at Crown Casino Monday night!

Phantom is absolutely correct. I was at the game, and in fact, was sitting right on the Northern Stand wing where Ablett started the game – right in front of me. It was 1989. I remember it well. Wayne Peters definitely started on him.

Like Phantom, I too was absolutely amazed that Bartlett could start Peters on him.

Again, because he lined up right in front of me, I can tell you that for the first half Ablett played on the same Northern side wing. After that, he went into the forward line as a leading target. I think Peters lasted about 4/5 goals on him after which a number of other players were tried on him for the rest of the game including Bomber James (who he also destroyed) and I think Peter Czerkaski (?) was another that copped a belting. Egan finished up on him in the end when Ablett was playing straight out of full forward in the last quarter. (Egan from memory was actually one of our better players on the day.)

I still have visions of Ablett getting cornered on the boundary line on the Northern Stand side at the Punt Road end by 3 Richmond players. He was about 30 metres out from goal. He weaved around all 3 Richmond players and lazily snapped the ball through for a goal. Geelong won by 134 points.

Very humiliating day.

Thanks Redders. I thought for a while my creeping senility might be building up into a fast jog.

tc36,

I dont really want to get into anything that might damage PRE but, if you're interested in substantiating any of these stories, then your best bet is through the public records.

I dont really wish to go any further.

Just one of many stories about him.......

but that just the thing...they are STORIES
is there any proof?

Depends on who's telling them. If, as in my case, a number were told to me by one of his ex-coach's at Geelong, then you'd have to say they're fairly robust.

But none can/will be repeated on PRE.

Yep, lot of stories. Check out the biography by G. Linnell (I think), for some of the tamer ones, but still pretty bad.

The Warnie quote "if I couldn't play cricket I'd probably be a garbo", applies, although Gazza may not have been able to hold that job down.

So he was in the same room with someone who overdosed on drugs.. Unless he had drugs in his system aswell at the time, or if he sold the drugs to her then what's the problem?

OK drugs aren't something people should be taking, but they are used everywhere. How does the fact he knew someone who took drugs soil his character?

Load of rubbish I say.

Thanks to those who have wisely chosen not to discuss Gary Ablett's private life on here.   I'm a tad fed up with legal threats this week.

Sorry Rosy, forgot that people are so petty as to force legal actions onto web discussion forums.. ???

Have you got enough info yet, thejinx? Check with the coroner.

But the fact she overdosed isn't Gary Abletts fault. I may be being a harsh, but what happened to Gary, could happen to anyone.

Did you read the transcripts at the time, thejinx? Or since. It was a pretty complex and rather disturbing sequence of events, IMO.

Very sad, too.

Who gives a rats ar$e, what happened after his career finished when it comes to selection of the Hall of Fame.
He is, in my opinion, the most exciting footballer of the last 25 years & should already be in there. Too much PC *smile* going on these days. So what if the AFL recognises someone who isn't a saint.
Should George Best, Maradona not be recognised as greats in their sports?
