Ross isn’t an inside mid. Not yet anyway. The vast majority of his career possessions are uncontested which is sort of ok because of his excellent kicking efficiency.

He might become one, but he is definitely not an inside mid at this particular point.

I tend to agree Red.

We have had raids on our depth last 4-5 years so we need to rebuild this, perhaps Ross becomes starting 22 or not but if he can elevate his game slightly (And all evidence shows his working hard to do this) we should be in a better situation depth wise which will be important ging forward.
 
I wonder how he coped mentally with hopper and Taranto being drafted. If that didn’t happen he is starting every game - but pretty low chance of playing in a flag.

He played inside / outside mid for the charges consistently in the juniors has not been used that way since arriving at Richmond where he has been played just about everywhere. HB/Wing/Fwd

That’s right. So as it stands right now, he’s not an AFL inside midfielder. He was a mixture at Oakleigh - I know the Oakleigh people - be but he isn’t and hasn’t been at AFL level. Yet.

Shedda's gawn, as is Lamblett.
Cotch is more than likely in his last year n Foosh is probably not far from the finish line either.
The Dusty one will simply spend more time hovering around the forward half with occasional midfield spells, Presty's got reliability issues n so has Fridge.
We may have added Tarantino n Grasshopper to our midfield but we desperately needed them.

Plenty of space gunna be available in our midfield rotations this year and as we roll forward into 24/25 and onward there'll be a core requirement for a Jack Ross just coming into his prime.

From Caesars match sim reports it appears that Ross is being played at half back. Do we think this is to add a bit more flexibility to the list or a genuine positional switch? I’m worried that he’s just starting to find his feet as a mid and this is going to set his development back as has occurred in the past?

With Prestia tweaking something in the preseason I think it’s going to be crucial to have a rotation of good inside mids outside of TT and Hopper (Graham, Sonsie, Ross).

Across his 40 odd games they’ve been poor but in the games where he’s been played through the middle his disposal and clearance numbers have been pretty good. There was a game towards the end of last season where he racked up 6 clearances and 25 disposals.

I'll indirectly quote Kingsley at a club function last year, who mentioned how many centre bounces Ross had attended for zero clearances. In a side now with Tarantopper, Ross is now half back.

Onesie shows more promise in the middle too.

Ross showed he was an AFL-level player last year. Previously ponderous possessed of the pill (eh!), he improved the speed and quality of his decision-making, authority and haste of use. He played well in the final, one of our best. He has shown the ability to run, and has put every foot in the right direction in the off-season looking at his improvement from an already pretty high level of endurance running. He wants it. He'll do all he can to get there. Yet there's no denying that with the two newbies, he's fringe. He's not a natural in the way Sonz is, but he's bigger, and that counts. He's a leader, I think.

I've said it before, I see him battling with Graham for the Lambo role. Maybe only one of them is at the club next year.

I somewhat agree that he may be a fringe player this year along with Graham but who else do we have coming through the ranks as an inside mid post Prestia and Cotchin retirements? Yes we have Hopper/TT and Sonsie but not much else after that.

I’m assuming we’ll be targeting a couple talls this trade/draft period and that doesn’t leave much currency left for a young mid or two….

Totally agree with your second paragraph. Reckon there's only room for one of the Jacks and Graham was basically out of the door until Port turned to JHF. Will be an interesting positional battle.
