The player I feel very sorry for now is the second best kid in the country who will end up being drafted/condemned to spend at least the next two years at this basket case club.

Hardwick was sure up against halfway through his first year 23.

‘Worse then Fitzroy’

We were at lowest in 2010. Hardwick was set at zero.
To think 3 years later he had us in the finals was an unbelievable achievement.
His record looking at it now is unbelievable.
2010. 0
2011.0
2012. 0
2013. Finals
2014. Finals
2015. Finals
2016. 0
2017. Flag
2018. Finals
2019. Flag
2020. Flag

The media don't compliment Hardwick like they do Clarkson or Scott.
Hardwick currently is the best coach in the comp by a country mile.
Not sure why Simpson and longmire are held high regard either.

Yep, he’s gunna be up against it from the start. North are at rock bottom so aren’t going to be winning too many games which means he,ll have a poor win/loss record which will put the pressure on. Like Neeld at Melbourne, Bolton at Carlton.
Or like a Dimma at ............................................................................................... Oh wait, this is #lolnorf we're talking about.

He won't last 3 years. Maybe 4 because it is North Melbourne.
Not sure using the old codger as a guide to selecting a coach is a good idea.

Leppa, Voss, Carcella or Knights would've been my top candidates
Well I suppose three of those young blokes have experience at coaching losing teams n getting sacked, at least that will stand them in good stead for future coaching jobs.

Good on Noble. Unlikely to have got a job under any other circumstance but gee, it is going to be a tough gig for him and the AFL not known for giving coaches second chances if you aren't successful the first time.
WIthout knowing much about him, it is probably a good appt, in that he will help sell the calm measured approach. I dont think there will be the expectation he will take them to a premiership, but will be seen to be planning the transition to success. as long he can sell the narrative so to speak.
he will have a couple of years where they dont need to win much, but they need to have a timeline and communicate that, and then be somewhere close to achieving it.

The second-bottom side put 8 goals past us in the last quarter in Round 7 and our percentage actually improved.

Always very easy with the benefit of hindsight but in 2010, we had a nucleus of quality or potential quality in Lids, Jack, Trent, Dustin, Grimes, Astbury and Edwards.

The north appointment seems understandable and safe. I think the major issue is their list. They will be paying the price for list management and strategy during the Scott era for years to come.

Fagan is making a decent fist of it, but it's a young man's game.
John Todd coached my old team Swan Districts. Was great in the early 80's. An unhinged lunatic by the time they let him in charge of the Eagles.

So I wonder what Norths philosophy will be after dumping 13 players? With list sizes to be between 37-44 do they go the lesser 37 thinking “well we know we,re not going to be great in the next few seasons so no point loading up only to cull and extra 7 we,ll keep it to a minimum” or do they say “we know we,re not going to be great in the next few seasons so let’s load up with 44 and see as many players as we can and sort the wheat from the chaff”?

With a minimum spend in the salary cap there will be quite a few guys being paid well overs if they only have 37. Logic says they go for 44, but do they have enough picks? And what type will they get in the very late rounds anyway? What a *smile* storm.

We were in a similar position with the exodus at the end of 2009. Martin/Griffiths/Astbury/Dea/Taylor/Webberley/Nason in the ND, with Nahas and Browne upgraded. Then six rookies added (including the delisted Polak) who never amounted to much.

They're not going to solve their list problems in one year unless they're psychic. Yeah, big trouble. This is the closest thing to a Hardwick-style rebuild since Hardwick.

One big difference is that #lolnorf’s dysfunctional board won’t back Noble, the way ours backed Hardwick.

You'd think they've received some sort of guarantee from the AFL as to their survival. Plenty of big bumps in the road even in Hardwick's success story.

It's a gutsy move for a small club. I wish them well, but not too well.

Draft as many Tasmanians as possible so that when they relocate in a few years time they improve their chances of retaining a few of them

You reckon he,LL be another Dimma?
Not at all. But you linked coaches who were "going to be up against it from the start" with failures like Neeld and Bolton.
I was merely pointing out that most first time coaches by definition inherit basket cases, so even those that end up being successful are up against it from the start.
Not everyone inherits gift-wrapped premiership sides in the way that C.Scott and Buckley did (both of whom, mind you, have largely failed to bring home the bacon, Scott's first-year Christmas present notwithstanding).

North should see if they can off load pick 2 and snag 3 picks in the top 20.
Because this year is a lottery. Not convinced Footscarys number 1 pick is as good as they are making it out to be.
The foward from WA reminds me of Schauke.
Phillips is too small for an inside mid.
And Holland's is an oustside mid/winger. Not worth pick 2 in a draft.
Best they try and load up on picks and hopefully they snag another Ziebel or Cunnington or Goldstein.

North must get more selections right than wrong in this draft.

Its now or never they need to do a full rebuild starting with the kids from the last 2 drafts who are left such as Simpkin, Zurhaar, Larkey, Davies Uniacke., McKay, Xerri and Thomas.

Btrad Scott's legacy.

His brother is going to leave the Cats in the same hole when he goes in a year or 2.

Part of the problem is that Hardwick was recruited as a long term coach who was employed to take the club forward. Noble looks like a stop gap not a permanent solution.
