This is an interesting one.
The south has everything, trade, money and now industry
The north now has something the south doesnt have - a bomb
Mind you the south and the japs could probably develop them very quickly. Plus they have a mate that's got plenty.
So what is the north up to?
Cant be to relieve sanctions, as they will now increase. Could upset the Chinese as well. Leaving the north without any friends.
Could be KimJong just boosting his ego
Could be developing arms to sell - but who would deal with them?

L&B, there is a lot to question about US foreign policy, but North Korea is one of the most wretched places on earth. Millions of people eat the bark off trees while the leadership builds monuments to itself and pumps what money it has into the armed forces in order to keep the people suppressed and the despots in power.

I think Clinton was trying to get to some trade agreement, then Bush came into power and pretty much said, nup, and the tensions rose... the North wanted good trade arrangements and now that Bush is in power they aren't getting what they want/need....
talking about the government pumping money into the armed forces... September 11 happens and America needs more arms etc... who gets the contracts but the buddies of government??.... who goes into the army, the young unemployed??....
I hate politics. Why can't we put the money where it is needed instead of putting it into development of weapons of mass destruction that they cannot find anyway.....and when they can find it can't do anything about it....

At least a person in South Central LA has access to information and facts about the irresponsibility of the US government. At least a person in South Central LA can voice their disapproval of the systematic neglect and and the long-standing lack of action to improve their living conditions. In North Korea the citizen is told from birth to worship the "Great Leader" and "Dear Leader". The authorities blame the famine on the outside world, and not on their propensity to build unnecessary monuments or to simply steal large amounts of what the country has for their own personal use. Anyone who disboeys the regime or questions its authority or motives finds themself in a forced labour camp.
An impoverished American has freedom of thought.
An impoverished American has the freedom to vote.
An impoverished American who has no food and no money to buy food at least has some chance that someone -- family, friends, charity -- will do something to help them when the government will not.
An impoverished American accused of a crime at least has recourse to a court of law.
An impoverished American will not be be thrown into a forced labour camp simply for discussing the failings of the government with another impoverished American.
An impoverished American who is the victim of injustice from the government at least has the chance that someone will speak out and bring it to public attention, even if nothing is done and the damage cannot be repaired.
A North Korean peasant has none of this. None.
An impoverished American has the freedom to vote.
