Pick 72: Ryan Garthwaite

A scorecard of 149.24 in 2 seasons is a fair case for!!
Simply an outstanding conversion rate for any forward at any comp level. Kid's got some development work ahead of him while he grows up so he might as well have a quiet chat to Fly over summer n see if he can't sniff out a couple of ressies games at CHF.
Could be an outrageous steal if he developed into a dead eye CHF in a couple of years.

3 things that i found different with Ryan's kicking style " not going to say its wrong but its different'

1. As most have picked out its a 2 handed ball drop
2. He drops the ball from lower down than the usual footballer ( which is probably why he is accurate )
3. He doesnt kick through the ball , His leg doesnt go far back and he actually kind of jabs the ball than kicks through it with the front of his foot, Looks as though he is just guiding the ball onto his navicular.

I was always taught to bring my foot back and to kick through the ball and further down. But he is effective so

If you can remember the Krackouer brothers back in the eighties it sounds like you are describing their kicking style.

Good pick up Yanbo, I was just reminiscing about them on the Shai thread. If I recall Phil's action was pretty conventional whereas Jimmy's was the one with a similar action to Argy's.

Other way around, TT. But Phil was a leftie. One of my favourites as a kid.

yeah good one. add Uncle Krak to Cloke, Round, Gas, Wakka as great players with horRible looking kicks

Francis Jackson said we're going to modify his kicking technique. How many players have successfuly modified their technique once into the system?

Good luck.

The Irish recruits need to do this, I remember Pearce Hanley's kicking in the early days and it was rough. Not sure how they intend to make the change but from all reports Moore has made some incremental gains.

Our own Jack Riewoldt early days was not a very good kick, He improved dramatically in just 2 seasons and now is an extremely reliable kick

Stuart Lowe was an awful kick and improved also

You are correct. I'm getting old!! I just checked out some You Tube footage. Gee footy was fun then.

Ditto Brendan Gale.

Earl Spalding was another who looked awful in the early days.

David Rhys-Jones couldn't kick the ball more than 10 metres off the ground and not more than 30 metres long when he played his first few games for South in the Escort (could've been the Stirling) Cup. Became one of the best all time kicks in the game imo.

Alistair Kynch was ordinary to start with.

But who can forget Rod Austins highly irregular style?

Only one mans assessment but here is a full profile:

Good assessment. As a KPP the most important skill imo is reading the play and the flight of the ball. It's why Brereton was a champion despite his size. It's why Jack is so effective. Taking simple marks in packs while others are flapping around. It's why Ben Griffiths will never be better than average. Ryan seems to have ths ingredient. Be interesting to see how he develops.

I hope that Ryan isn't penciled in as a defender.
With the departure of McBean and Vickery, and Chol possibly being a defender, there's a need to develop a couple of forwards in the VFL. His marking and goal kicking accuracy are very handy commodities.
I read somewhere that he is now 194 cm's, that's a nice size for a forward.
