LOL, what classic selective quoting with punctuation rules no less.

Here's the quote in full:

But good to see Turnbull was trying to wind it back. Just a shame the riotous right kicked him out.

Yeah, dunno. Private schools certainly favour the Libs over the ALP.

I went to a private school and certainly didn't emerge voting Liberal. I can't recall anyone else that did. The only strident political views were left wing, thanks in large part to Midnight Oil's popularity.

When you restrict supply prices go up. Victorian government has banned supply development for onshore development of gas. Hardly surprising. .

Young people are brainwashed via the education system without even being aware of it. It's why Labor wants to lower the voting age. "New voters" who barely speak English understand that 'Labor' is Australian for 'welfare', while others resent the Liberals' attempts to wean people off middle class welfare.

Tax and spend is a winning policy... until the next Cain and Kirner come along to remind everyone of its flaws.

You cannot be serious. Costello and Howard invented middle class welfare.

When it comes to welfare the big losers are:

(a) those poor liberal party donors who will miss out on their windfall profits by having their land rezoned in a way that it doubles in value,

(b) those poor multi nationals who wont enter into a contract that entitles them to a billion dollar damages claim three weeks later;

(c) those poor coal companies who wont have their dying and inefficient plants subsidised or bought out at extravagant prices at taxpayer's expense; and finally

(d) those poor mobsters whose lobster investment failed to pay off.

I did note in interviews after the election Dan was talking about reform. About getting things done. About fixing problems with schools, hospitals and public transport. Given labour have been in charge 19 of the last 23 years why are there so many issues? Why don't we have better infrastructure? Did the libs stuff it all up in their 4 years in power?

There are some who are still blaming Kennett from events a quarter of a century ago.

I'm not tribal Jazzy (other than yellow and black blood) so you're wasting your time.

Voted labor 1 for the first time in about 30 years simply because Andrews walked the talk. Yep many issues like infrastructure, domestic violence, mental health, investment in renewables, death with dignity etc were not adequately addressed but they are now and that's what counts.

Must say that this description of Kroger by Andrews is spot on:

"Swanning around suburbs that you’ve never been to in your Burberry trench coat, lecturing people about the cost of living—people pick fakes and they pick nasty fakes from a long way off"

Like a few others on here I would consider myself right-of-centre and for the most part have voted liberal. However I feel more aligned with the Andrews government despite a few red flags - think they are governing and agree with their "progressive" policies which in this day-and-age is unique.

Certainly won't be voting liberal again for the forseeable future.

Wasn’t doing to wind anyone up. Just an observation. I understand it wasn’t Dan in charge for most of that time, let’s hope he keeps thing moving.

My hope for the future is that the Libs don’t read the vibe of the electorate and move even further to the right. That might put them in the wilderness for a generation. If they don’t learn from this, they never will. They need to return to being the centre right party they are supposed to be. But I'm tipping Uncle Rupert won't agree to this.

What's up with you Easterners? All whinging about Sky Rail and yet they vote for Dan's party. :hihi

Small vocal minority when the vast majority were for it. its the same here in Essendon with a bunch of vocal grandmas protesting against the Buckley St level crossing and even brought in their own independent candidate (who couldn’t even win 5% of the vote). the same is also happening in Coburg where skyrail the whole way through is the biggest no brainer of all time.

Scrapping the East West Link and getting rid of the level crossings has been a winner for the Andrews government.

lets hope this means we have seen the last of the EW Link.

I’m old enough to remember rust belt Victoria in the Cain and Kirner years. Trams striking and clogging city roads for days. Unemployment through the roof. Lay offs and redundancies everywhere.

I actually think Andrews is doing okay. I just hope he is strong enough to resist the overtures of union militancy now he has a big mandate. Remain moderate and balanced.

union militancy to the extent you suggested doesn't exist anymore. when is the last time we seen these types of strikes? that’s just more scaremongering that the people on the street don’t believe. but when wage growth is as low as its ever been, you know the rules are far too in favour of big business.

There might have been a bit of a backlash against the party cos of their preferences. They preferenced a few right wing parties ahead of more progressive parties.

this exactly. Fiona Patten is a fantastic politician, but she choose to preference the DLP over parties such as the socialists. and she paid for it.

because we are decades behind in infrastructure. Even the metro rail tunnel and airport rail link won’t bring us back to parity. Sydney eliminated their level crossings in the 1930’s. think about that for a second…

Yep, and if they were really thinking, they'd bring the upfield deathtrap/carpark/trainstation/blindcorner/walkway/bikepath up with it.

At what point does labor take some responsibility we are in this position when they have been in charge for 4 of the last 5 terms?

Bracks achieved nothing except a disastrous regional fast rail sinkhole, built a tollway instead of a freeway (breaking an election promise) out east and failed on any long-term planning despite 3 terms as premier.

Lets hope Dan is the man.

they are both to blame. there was hardly any new infrastructure from the time Cain extended the Altona line to Werribee in the mid 80's to when Bracks slowly started extending lines at the turn of the century (the St Albans line extension to Sydenham was completed in 2002). the only one i can think of off the top of my head was the cranbourne electrification in the mid 90's.

yes, there has been decades of underspending on infrastructure in this state which will be with us for another 20 years imo.

This is probably one of the bigger local issues in the election. Most in the state get that there probably is no choice but to invest heavily for a long time. The argument in my mind is just about what the priorities are

Hi everyone! I was asked for an update. I'm still second with some counting to go. My t shirts were black and yellow. I managed to shave 12 off the treasurers primary vote. He's the only cabinet member to suffer a swing against. Hopefully it's a wake up call for him and some money flows our way. If I stay second during preference distribution there is a good chance the seat may become marginal. Huge effort from the team.

Thanks Joe. Well done. Always liked your musings. We are becoming more comfortable with independents and electorates seem to like them when they get in.

Will watch the final count with interest.
