Talking Politics

Well, as I said I don't see the sense in destroying productive farming land. If that's the case, I'd be against it. I'm certainly not buying into the xenophobia part though.

Not selling Xenaphobia, just stating a fact. I used to know a guy who was paid by the Chinese Govt to go around Australia and to talk large land-holding farmers into selling up. Like I said, just a fact.

And here's another article... http://www.buzzfeed.com/alexlee/farmers-not-convinced-coal-is-good-for-humanity

This bunch of Flat-Earthers have now cut funding to Solar and Wind further and created a new commissioner for tin foil hats. Australia is sinking fast and Austraila's worst PM is paddling around saying come on in the water's fine.

Nah man, the government is focused on the right things... Like which part of the ABC produces QnA and how many Royal Commissions we can have into the conduct of past and present Labor leaders.

Uncle Rupert is going to make sure we all remember this come next election.

As for workers, if you read a letter from A Robb, it paved the way for Chinese workers to come across to build and run it.

Hey K3, I read that the local mayor is all for it. Jobs, Jobs, Jobs after all.

'Gunnedah Mayor Owen Hasler said he expects many benefits for the local economy. "Potentially there's up to 600 people to be employed permanently at that mine and we would expect a number of those employees, as many as possible, would come out of our community," "It also means we would potentially get a lot of people coming here to work and to live preferably.'

As stated, most (if not all) of the major well paid jobs will be reserved for Chinese Nationals however a few Aussies should do alright out of it. My guess is they will have to be somehow politically connected toadies.

Still if the good people of the Gunnedah area can push a broom, swing a mop or even direct vehicle traffic then they can get a job there, on minimum wage of course.

Finally, as someone who has had some dealings with mainland Chinese, they wont be spending any great amount of money within that local Australian Community.

Personally I hope it doesn't go through.

Think you're spot on there Thai-guy.

When the desal plant was being built on the Bass Coast I was living a few k's away in Wonthaggi. As I often had to head up to Melbourne at 4.40am, the amount of road traffic coming 'into' town, from the suburbs of Melbourne, was unreal. Just like the propaganda on this massively oversized project, there were all these promises about how there would be lots of jobs for the local economy and that people would move down etc etc etc. Well, I can report that all of those immensely overpaid construction people came in, bought up property, screwed the 'vibe' of the town right up, sold their property for any low low price (causing a massive drop in land value which continues to this day, half a decade later) and then buggered off with their fat wallets to the next major project the unions could screw a state government over on.

Did locals benefit from a job at the desal plant? Well, of the 14 or so full-timers still on, less than half were locals prior to the plant being built.

Gunnedah is going to be the next Wonthaggi if this goes through *except* that it has going to have a massively negative impact on agriculture in one of the best producing areas in Australia. Are we looking to be "Asia's foodbowl" or "Asia's sandpit"?

Maybe I'll start a Bull Sh*tten party.
Just for balance.
This is not meant to be a pot shot Poppa but your comment is to me symptomatic of what is wrong with our political situation. Just because one or two post about how much we can't stand Abbott you feel like you have to " balance" it with a potshot at Shorten. It seems to be an assumption that hating Abbott means loving shorten.

As far as I am concerned Shorten has really only one redeeming feature, he isn't Tony Abbott.

Maths is not your strong point.
And I'll always insist on balance.
But of course this means my dissenting voice should be silenced. Or put down.

the interesting thing Poppa is that your reply has actually reinforced the point i was making, which means you didn't actually get it.

The point I was making was that balance in a debate about Abbott is not gained by assuming that those who hate Abbott love Shorten and your post assumes it is. Balance in the political debate has to get away from assuming people are Labor or Liberal. I will join your Bill Sh!tten party as well but it doesn't mean my opinion of Tony Abbott changes.

Give us balance for sure, but don't think that the old Labor vs Liberal argument is balance. If you read the posts I have made here, which aren't that many, they are pretty consistently about lamenting the fact that both major political forces we have in this country are imo totally useless at the moment.

My beef with Abbott is not about his political party, it is about where he is taking this country.

can you give balance to the Abbott hate by providing any Abbott love?

can you, or anyone else, say anything positive about him (other than he is not Shorten)?

Can you lead the way with some positives Brodders? I've got a bit of a mind blank at the moment but to me the negatives would far outweigh the positives.

i got nothing. sorry.

No worries Brodders. I'm interested in what positives people can come up with. Maybe I'll think "Oh yeah I'll pay that one" but I can't really think of any myself. Far too many negatives clouding my brain.

Um, he's transparent. He's honest in that he warned the public not to believe a word he says unless it's been scripted. He's keeping shorten out of power, but at a high cost though.

That's about all I got.
