It is bizarre. ALP will likely lose but claim victory - reminds of the Australian soccer team when playing at the World Cup.Tigers of Old said:What a mess.

The electorate is moving away from the old party political divide where people choose parties the way they choose sporting teams. Issues are much more informative. The parties response has been to appeal to their "base" and shore up their rusted on supporters while missing the point on the things the electorate are trying to tell them. This is why The Greens are pulling votes from both sides. No one really wants them to get any bigger. Give the people a better choice and their vote will crumble.
To match the voting peculiarities the parties would need to cleave off into smaller parties comprised of the members that agree on major issues. Refugees, Climate Change policies, immigration, tax, welfare, infrastructure etc. There are many members in both major parties who disagree with their leadership over asylum seekers, marriage equality and the issues above. They need to break off and give voters a less compromised choice. They can come together to deal as a block after the election. The government would be comprised of a coalition of smaller parties where the members are free to advocate for the issues they feel strongly about and which won them their seats.
A multicoloured government. A rainbow coalition if you like.
