Tyler Sonsie

Sonsie isn’t a see ball, get ball, type player. He’s no Cunnington for sure. What he is elite at is reading the game. He sees where the ball is likely to go and gets there before others. That’s his one wood. That’s how he accumulates his possessions. That skill can’t be taught but he can definitely increase his hardness with coaching and a more mature body. And he’s got very good skills. I’m buying his stocks.

Available evidence does not support your opinion TM. Sonsie had 13 contested possessions last week alone. That’s ~42% of his total which is a pretty good ratio for any midfielder.

Regardless, Sonsie can find the ball better than most and his disposal is first class. In my view, he’s one of the few elite young prospects in our list and when he finally gets a full, uninterrupted pre-season he will well and truly show it.
Stats Schmats. Reckon most of Sonzies contested possessions are actually contested disposals, there's a difference. Also doesn't "' find " much footy as it's generally the hard work of team mates finding him way out in space and providing him the footy.

Reading the wrong game then at most centre bounces and boundary throw ins. Usually lurks behind his opponent then sags off before the rucks actually contest the ball. Leaves his opponent a free run at the actual fall of the ball while he's often going the wrong way.
Loose, outside running link up player is pretty much all I'm seeing in game after game from Sonz, that's his 1 wood n it's more like a little 5 wood.

Just in case anyone's uncertain, so far from what I've watched of his game. Old fart Maso's not a fan of his game, still hoping to see something to convert my opinion, but not really expecting.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaat...???

Sonsie criticism is a bit sacrosanct on the forums. Tread lightly.
Haaaarrrrgh. What'll happen, will people type at me in big fat capital letters with lots of weird little asterisks n symbols??

It's just an opinion and discussion about the way a player performs on match day on a footy forum. Some might agree with me and others won't. Those that get their knickers in a bunch simply would probably best be served by having a bex n a cuppa tea followed by a good lie down in a darkened room.

True everyone fumbled on a wet n slippery day, but that's not Sonzarelli's problem.
The bloke simply tries to avoid contact like he's trying to avoid the plague.
Rarely gets a contested possession, he sometimes has contested disposals ( subtle difference ) when an opposition player happens to be near enough to get him when he's already got the pill which results in a scrappy little dinky kick or hand pass to not much.

Years ago I started calling Heppell a seagull because he was usually found hovering outside the packs waiting for the easy chip to distribute to others.
Compared to Sonz, Heppell was a raging beast inside extractor.
Ah the old seagull analogy. I prefer the Catholic School Girl one myself but it’s very dated now, not unlike myself I guess

Watch him sing the song its the same way he plays no intrest no intensity no passion hes not invested in football unfortunately.

Really, I don't think that's right, he seems to be quite a reserved sort of character to me. Certainly not as outgoing as a lot of his team mates.

Sonsie got a kick. That's good. If he keeps getting a kick he'll improve. MoJu got a kick too. Happy days.

What was the knock on him before we drafted him.
Gut running/work rate wasn't high enough.
Wasn't consistent in performance

They were the two things I'd read (Nb- I don't watch juniors, paraphrasing phantom drafts etc)

As a midfielder we cant gift lazy blokes games.

We need a fit and two way running Sonz.

Hes no Martin Petracca or DeFatty who get protection to allow them to run one way.

Martin got it from Lambert, George, Dion, Graham and Coitchin.

De Fatty gets it from McCreery, Lipinski, and some other campaigners.

Petracca gets it Neale Bullen, Spargo, Swallow etc.

He still manages to get it 30 times despite “sagging off”.

Sounds like a bit of poor coaching process that could be rectified - hopefully
