Umpire farce - Getting worse by the minute!

Not sure if someone has already answered this here, but do they count OOB on the full as a Free kick for?

Saints had at least 3 of them, all in the first half.
It's a good question, BT. I'm sure someone one here will know for sure.

we seem to be pretty good at forcing the oppo to kick under pressure and out on the full. If they are counted in the frees for, it would only further highlight how few in play frees we get.

I still think Dimma should let fly during a post match presser sometime. It would be worth the fine. I'd chip in!

Maybe Balmy could tell a journo that Dimma is seething and he could get a scoop.

Dimma could just say -
"Take a look at the data! Same thing, week in week out, year in year out!".
"Don't give me that rubbish that we play a different brand of footy! There are a few clubs copying our game style and they are right up there in frees for".
"We get dudded consistently!".
"I never want to see Deboy umpire a Richmond match again! Bloody cheat!"
"Anyway, you know I can't say anything about the umps. I'm pleased we had a good win" :D :D :D

Heard a funny talkback caller on the Dwayne Russell podcast when I was walking our dog before. The caller said that he didn't follow either team but "kind of hoped" the Saints would win. He said watching the game that he felt that Richmond were getting the "rub of the green" and then noticed late in the game that the frees were 20-10 in favour of the Saints. He wondered if this was a deliberate strategy by the the Tigers to give away plenty of frees earlier in the match so that the umpires would go easy on us later in the game. Hmm, still waiting for our "easy run" later in games for the past five years :)

Several times watching the game yesterday, I saw the umpire(s) who were unsighted, guess and award a free kick.

I cant remember seeing that for a while.

Is it mostly from other clubs training to win free kicks like soccer players do?

I mean, look at every other club’s small forwards and mids dropping the shoulder into tackles to win free kicks for “too high”.

Aarts, George, Rioli, etc. aren’t soccer players like the soccer players at every other club.
Ssssshhhh! Let them. We train to win premierships while nobody is looking.

Five years of getting flogged by the maggots for three n possibly even four flags. Reckon I'll bite the lip n take it.

How did "Honey" Russell respond to that ?

Years ago The Age game stats had a source of goal stat. From marks, open play and frees.

Made a lot of sense and revealed a lot.

Now thanks to Champion Data they divide it into rebound , stoppage , kick in etc which is only part of the story.

Closest to old stat now is Sun showing location F50, D50, mid.

I work with a saints supporter. He thought we got favoured by the umps. He thought we got a lot of our goals from frees. When I told him the free kick count he was surprised. I asked him about goals from frees and he said Rioli. I asked him if he thought that was not a free and he said no, it was there. But still a goal from a free. He couldn’t remember any others but was sure they were there because we kicked a lot of goals. He was surprised to learn we are bottom of the free kick diff table for the last 5 seasons he thought we’d be at the top.

Just goes to show the influence of the media there, Doctor.

Clowns like Cornes perpetuate the myth that we get an easy run from the maggots, that we don't travel and that we are favoured in the fixture in that we get so many games at the MCG. If people hear it enough they will believe it.

Hey 22, Dwayne has been surprisingly positive in his comments about us since the 2020 flag. He said it might be a tactic, but our tackling pressure is so high, we probably don't care about giving some frees away. He said that you can go to a casino and see 14 reds come up in a row, that sometimes the free kick count is not a true reflection of the game. I think he was intimating there that even though the numbers suggest we get a bad go, that we might actually get the "rub of the green", which would be rather strange!

Yes MD, this is a common thing. A Blues bloke at work is a massive Tigers' hater. He explained to me after our 47 point win in the 2019 Qualifying Final against the Lions that we were lucky as the Lions didn't kick straight early and we got dodgy frees (even though we were -3). I gave him my thoughts back and have avoided the nuffie since. After my daughter and I were walking back to the car after the round 1 game versus the Blues and being -10 in the frees, I said to her that I bet the Blues character from work thinks they got ripped off by the umpires. Sure enough, he was telling another lady at work that they were "playing against 25" with the umps! When she pointed out that they were 10 frees in front, he just mumbled about "it's where you get them". I agree the media has a lot to do with creating and perpetuating the myth of us being looked after by the fluros!

Especially with commentators. The losing team is always “unlucky” and the winning team is always “lucky”. I’m sure they’re instructed to frame it that way to keep people believing in their teams and to keep watching.

I’m fine with it though, particularly because our club is so good at avoiding getting sucked in by this kind of thinking.

Agree 123. The commentators set a narrative to keep everyone a little bit interested. Our boys are great at filtering out the crap!

when i watched footy with neutral supporter mates 15 years ago, Richmond was kind of their 2nd team and they would cheer for them with me.
have found the last 4 years, they despise Richmond and cheer for the opposition when they play us.

I now dont have mates around whilst watching footy. haha.

Of all the ones he could pick out, picks out the one where the Saints player clearly dives on the ball and doesn't attempt to get rid of it. That is paid every single game. That wasn't even a 50/50. I suspect your Saints supporter work colleague watches through rose tinted glasses.

Includes rounds 1 through 4 this year

It gets worse if you roll in Round 5.

Looking at average free kicks, we receive 16 frees. The next worst are the hawks on 17.8. Yes we are worse than the next worsat (not the average or the best) by 1.8 frees per game, yet people think we receive too many frees. How few do they want us to get?

I can deal with the frees we give away, I do agree that this is most likely a tactic, but the frees for isn't anything to do with tactics. Our tactics don't allow for head high frees, pushes in the back, holding the man, holding the ball etc (being the top 4 frees to be given away) but for some reason despite what we see with our own eyes, we are just not paid frees that should be theref.

Go back to the commentary from Thursdays game (I've watched the 1st 3 quarters) and there are numerous times where the umps are surprised when we don't receive frees.
