Umpire farce - Getting worse by the minute!

I dislike his playing style. He rarely makes genuine attempts to mark. He's more interested in seeking umpire assistance. It's a disingenous way to play. A bit like the Selwood shrug seeking to draw frees. Not behaviour to be celebrated IMO.

I'd be interested to know what his reach is. Only listed as a cm taller than Lynch which surprises me as he seems to play a lot taller.

Reckon his hit point on the ball would be pretty high compared to most forwards which would cause issues for the defenders.
The forwards always play against shorter defenders. Guys like May 193, Rance 194, Aliir 194, Sicily 190, Rampe, the McCartin's have to man up on much taller forwards. I reckon most of the talls play 5cm taller than their opponents most games.

Buddy 199, Hawkins 198, Kennedy 196, Cameron 196, Lynch 199, Brown 22cm.

Darcy Moore and Harris Andrews the tallest defenders that come to mind. Barrass and McGovern at the Eagles.

My biggest issue is why is he allowed to run 60m for a shot at goal?
I thought the 15m running before bouncing rule would apply all over the ground, all situations?
I know they don't adhere strictly to the 15m, more like 20-25m but c'mon man, after he's hit half that run up, at least after 20-25m it should be called play on shouldn't it?

It doesn't apply to stop plays but probably only because no-one ever considered that someone would go back that far!

I think the rule that needs to be changed is the time for the set shot. You should get 30 seconds and then play on is called, not as it is currently where you have 30 seconds to begin your approach to kick or play on is called.

There's a massive loophole there where in a tight game a player can take an extra 10, 20, 30 seconds just by approaching goal slowly on the way in.

1/ It doesn't apply to stop plays, is that 'all' stop plays? So you can mark it inside the centre square, ump acknowledges the mark and allows you to run 50-60 metres backwards as long as you then come back and kick it forward?
2/. Definitely the set shot should keep counting until you kick the ball, if 30 is up like you said before you've kicked it, play on man.
3/ When does the 30 start, when Ben takes his mark, that run up must take him a long time, like take 20 seconds of his set shot allowed time?

4/. He also is taking out half that side of the field for his opponents when he misses his shot! Not one opponent allowed for pretty much the whole left side of the field. They can't get into defensive positions when he misses, they'll cop a 50, that's another reason something has to be done about it.

Sorry, I meant bouncing the ball doesn't apply to stop plays. I guess theoretically you could go back as far as you like, we certainly used to see that before the umpires used to cal play on if you didn't move along. Now if you tried to go back they only give you a few seconds to move it on so you would just be losing ground.

2/. Definitely the set shot should keep counting until you kick the ball, if 30 is up like you said before you've kicked it, play on man.

Absolutely it should, currently the 30 starts when you mark the ball or get the free and stops as soon as you start moving forwards to kick.

So Brown has to get back to his run-up and start moving forward within 30 seconds. If he takes 45 more seconds once he starts moving forward it doesn't matter. It definitely should be a flat 30 seconds, as soon as the player is clear and walking back the umpire should start the clock and call play on 30 seconds later.

4/. He also is taking out half that side of the field for his opponents when he misses his shot! Not one opponent allowed for pretty much the whole left side of the field. That is a brilliant point. I've never heard anyone think of that before, you've just discovered a genius tactic clubs should be exploiting.

I agree. I’ve never understood why he’s been allowed to get away with it for so long. If he got pinged for it a couple of times he’d stop doing it.

So you reckon everyone should tell their players, take 40-60 metre run ups and block that side of the field in case U miss the shot.

U should tell the Tiges to complain or do it themselves man :eyes

Every game I follow they keep going on about giving fans more game time - AFL, NFL, NBA, World Game. And I wonder how many close games his team has won and lost, and the losses if they had that extra 2-3 minutes he sucks up a game for his set shot routine of running/walking backwards then running forward . It'd be interesting to know what Roos/Demons close game W/L% is in games he's played for them

Definitely situations where that would be an advantage. I'd love to see the opposition scores from Ben Brown points stats to really assess it.
Yeah now see where we are taking this, you'd think it would be lower than most other guys who've had lots of set shots at goal. We need to get onto Champion Data man :eyes

That shot looks like it is after the siren, so no one is attempting to spread, but if the opposing ruck, say, got stuck on the wrong side they would not be able to switch.
The other advantage would be when running down the clock late in the game. he could pass the ball 20 mtrs forward, and still be 30 mtrs away from the man on the mark, it if giving his team mates easy space to lead into- not for a better shot, but to eat up time.

I think the scoreboard operators time it? which can cause issues, i remember one time a tiger got a free on the bottom of the pack, the clock started pretty quickly, but it took a good 10 secs, or longer for him to actually get up, causing a rushed shot.

I have a vague memory of one happening with Balta? when play on got called and the replay had shown it was 35 seconds or something from the mark and I thought they said the umpires actually keep their own time and the scoreboard is just a guide.
