The clubs and AFLs actions make business sense short term, but is it right? Richmond has large cash reserves so could keep everyone employed this year if they needed to, even with no income right?

The AFL is freakin loaded and dumps 80% of staff? If every business does this the country is farkeed.

Every player in the league has volunteered to have their salaries slashed by 50% announced just now.
Incredible gesture that will likely save many jobs and the competition. Bravo AFLPA.

As others have stated, if we are trouble then everyone is in trouble. I have a hunch that the competition will look quite different this time next year.

Unfortunately the club will need to be as ruthless as every other club to keep their heads above water. Timing has been fortuitous with no debt, plenty of cash and no major projects underway. No different to the broader situation in the economy.

If there is mass financial ruin for many clubs then you'd expect the AFL to take ownership of them and start to arrange a league that they see as ideal. Mergers, relocations etc.

Can we send North to Broome?
You got something against Broome, Baloo? :)

It's gonna look like the old days pre-80s with the 1 or 2 coaches in the box.

That seems very harsh on the guys on low paid contracts. Like Marlion.

Dusty at 50% is still on $500k plus for the year. Marlion would probably be on base, so dropping to $75k?

Tricky one, while 50% of Dustys wage is a huge real amount, but it leaves him on a huge amount too.

some rookie like Mabiors 50% is a lesser real amount to forgo, but doesn't leave him with a whole lot either.

I would think the reasonable thing to do, since they are all very equal when they aren't playing,

is all of them accept a basic footballers wage?

I can see mum and dad club members who are forced onto the dole but keep paying the memberships to keep a club afloat, could be unhappy if Dangerfield takes home half a million buck while doing nothing?

I totally understand the industrial relations issues, and I havnt entirely got my head around how I feel about this,

but my hunch is, they should all take the basic footballers wage until they are playing again.

having said all that,

a voluntary 50% wage cut is admirable.

For people with mortgages, car loans/leases, business interests etc etc in the industry though taking a cut is a huge deal, as it is for everyone else in society. To ask people to do that when they are ready and willing to work and have contracts in place means there has to be a bit of middle ground found I think.

I hear all you say BR, and good on you for getting yourself in a position where you can forgo renumeration.

but for everyone with a mortgage, a car lease and business interest and investments,

theres plenty more being laid off who renting a room, rely on public transport, and with zero savings.

the honeymoon is over I fear.

If I was the AFLPA, a non-negotiable pre-requisite to any pay cut would be Chris Scott and every other snout in the AFL HQ trough take at least a 90% pay cut

the game cant go on without the players. It can go on with out a *smile* evolution director

We will come through the other side but not without a lot of red ink and a torpedo to our balance sheet that had a cash reserve of 24m
We have the scale with 100,000 members and ability to draw large crowds and sell lots of merchandise and sign valued sponsors that we can attract finance if necessary and claw back our position reasonably quickly
There’s only a select handful in our position , the balance will need even further afl support to get through , if this is worse than initially thought , then the comp may look very different to it does right now

There was a time not so long ago that I would have been happy for Benny to head to the AFL and sort that rabble out.
So glad he's still at the helm as we will need ever bit of what he's learned throughout his playing, players union and executive career, to help us through it.
Endless tough decisions ahead for a very long time and I wish him well.

I've made repeated statements of what the country should have done, but Dumb and Dumber have taken us down a very different and dangerous path. Scomo only said a week ago that the measures they were bringing in would keep job losses in the 10's of thousands. I wonder how many lost their jobs today, seeing the size of the queues for Centrelink its already large and I would expect that this is only the start. The tens of thousands will be proven to be a pipedream with the type of stimulus that they brought in.

Watching Classified... apparently there's a major dispute between the players and the AFL over pay. They (players) must exist in a bubble.
