U.S Presidential Election

"I think that everyone who has a baby should get a million dollars or something." Kanye West.

the myth that all politicians are equally bad. They ain't.
Different degrees of bad sure, but the key point is they are all bad. Some are better at hiding it than others. Trump bashing is so easy and boring and it distracts people from the fact that the alternatives are also garbage.

disagree.
you dont like politicians because they dont fit your libertarian beliefs therefor all must be bad. it is not true.
but we all know your world view is blinded by your belief system so debate is impossible.

Absurd reductionism. There are literally hundreds of policy differences between say, Biden and Trump. These policy differences have real impacts on people's health, rights, environment and economic well-being. Whether you prefer one or the other they are different in deeply significant ways.

So what's not true? My libertarian beliefs or my assessment of politicians based on my libertarian beliefs?

My world view is blinded by my belief system....what an interesting claim. Is your world view not blinded by your belief system? Not sure why this negates the possibility for debate either?

Sure they are different, but they are still bad. You and others are getting all hung up on Trump, praying for him to be ousted, but it won't improve things overall. Different groups will be privileged but overall well being won't improve because Trump is out of office.

I'll concede, not all politicians are bad, but for the amount of good politicians compared to bad politicians there are the statement might as well be true. The more useful way to categorise it is in terms of how bad a politician is, not whether they are any good.

OK, so since your position is that the outcome of the election is effectively meaningless, I'm hoping you'll leave this thread to those of us who do see it as significant.

If you want to discuss libertarian theology make a new thread.

Trump's doing two things right now, well three.

1. restarting his corona press briefings - big risk given his penchant for saying idiotic things, but I guess the WH has finally realised this problem is not going away any time soon. You can guarantee whatever he does it will be done in his typical half-assed, half-hearted way so can't see this getting much traction. Wearing masks plays well for rational people, but probably not enough to convince them to change their vote. And it will alienate/confuse his tin-foil hate wearing base.

2. Sending anonymous military forces into places like Portland - democratic cities - to restore "law and order". This against the wishes of local and state authorities. It's another "law and order" president gamble but its risky as again its divisive rather than unifying, and also contravenes state's rights, traditionally a sensitive issue in the US. https://nymag.com/intelligencer/202...tactics-in-portland-will-likely-backfire.html

3. Presidential decrees - seeing if he can override federal and state laws, and court decisions on things like immigration, schools etc through presidential decrees. This is because if you look back over the presidency you can see he's achieved very little except overturning Obama era legislation and building a few miles of Mexican wall, so he's trying to get his homework in late. Again risky as it alienates other arms of government and potentially large parts of the population. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/jul/20/trump-john-yoo-lawyer-torture-waterboarding

It's gonna be a crazy cluster-*smile* over the next 4 months.

his latest Harriet Tubman comments probably won't help too much with sales

I spoke to a few yank mates on the weekend. They reckon good ol' Kanye is still a Trumpster, and is out to cause a split in the POC vote this election.

Being divisive is an interesting strategy, what he will be banking on is that he can divide the country in such a way as to have the majority who turn out to vote, to vote for him. Thatcher was very divisive but relied on winning Southern England and enough of everywhere else to stay in power, it worked but Thatcher was a more astute politician than Trump.

It certainly will be crazy until November, and more than likely well beyond November.

As for politicians, given my political leanings I have little time for most of them. But there are genuine differences between politicians, political parties and governments. Although I would say not enough difference (they are all free market capo scum ;) ). The reality is that the current form of capitalism is unlikely to make way for a better alternative for quite a while so we should support those politicians who are most likely to actually implement policies we prefer: less inequality, fair trade, environmental responsibility etc (for me at least).

K3, Kanye as a vote splitter? Yep, that is a real possibility I'm sure many are trying to counter. But splitting votes, especially with first past the post and non-compulsory voting, can be very effective.

I read that first sentence as you are saying Trump is doing some things right.

A federal agent shot 26-year-old Donavan La Bella in the head with an impact munition; he was hospitalized and needed reconstructive surgery. In a widely circulated video, a 53-year-old Navy veteran was pepper sprayed and beaten after approaching federal agents to ask them about their oaths to the Constitution, leaving him with two broken bones.

There’s something particularly terrifying in the use of Border Patrol agents against American dissidents. After the attack on protesters near the White House last month, the military pushed back on Trump’s attempts to turn it against the citizenry. Police officers in many cities are willing to brutalize demonstrators, but they’re under local control. U.S. Customs and Border Protection, however, is under federal authority, has leadership that’s fanatically devoted to Trump and is saturated with far-right politics.

This is my thought as well.

Doh. Meant to add that the split in the POC vote would dramatically go against Biden, whose ties with Obama sees him as the main candidate of choice for POC.

As expected trump will attempt to postpone the election. He has a real problem with postal votes as his voter suppression plans will be foiled. Not sure what the process is but *smile* is going to get messy!

Luckily Congress has to approve a postponement so it's unlikely he can get it that way. But yeah, looks like they'll have to drag him out kicking and screaming.
