I think the club has decided that Stack needs a “tough love” training program. They will not give him any concessions and consistently keep on his back until the penny drops. They know he is coming from such a long way back. I suspect he is being watched like a hawk but also given loads of encouragement too.

Sydney has lost conditioning over the break. He didn't tick enough boxes and Burge has given him a public whack.

Has he made progress in this area compared to previous years? If so, how much improvement?

I'm okay with him taking a couple of years to improve his professionalism to the required standard, but you do want to see signs of progress every year.

What did he say for those of us without a HUN subscription?
“Stacky is still learning the caper. He has got some work to do with consistency of preparation. I am not going to mince my words there, he has still got a bit of work to do. He is a young player learning about his preparation, he has fantastic traits in his explosiveness and he’s highly skilled, but he needs to work really hard on his conditioning.”

I can't recall that one Taz, my only recollection of an off the rails Dusty is the first couple of seasons when Dusty was shacking up with Dan Connors who was the worst role model he could have had.
A massive difference between Dusty and Dan and Syd's early dedication to be elite.

I thought it was after his first season. He turned up out of condition and copped a blast from Hardwick. Stacky may be one of those guys who turns it on for the real thing, but doesn’t train well. Doesn’t excuse him, though, and he is surrounded by guys who put the work in and reap the rewards accordingly.

This is only Syd's 3rd full preseason isn't it? Not sure it's that massive a difference.

I am referring to the article, Dusty was doing everything to be elite even as a kid, Connors & Stack not so much relying on talent alone, silly comparison.

Connors is a better point of refence to where Syd is at right now, he needs to choose the right path, Dusty just strayed from his obsessive early drive which is easier to rekindle than those that have never had the will to do it before.

Rock star or AFL star, that is the decision that Syd has got to make.

Would we - or anyone - have likely been aware of any sort of rock star profile for Stacky if he didn’t have an AFL profile?
Either can provide long term rewards - particularly financial ones.
Syd needs to make a call on his personal priorities but I reckon his best chance of making a go of the former will be built on success in the latter.
For our sakes I hope he makes footy his number one priority for the medium term. If in ten years time he wants to think about the other - well good luck to him.

I don't think Sydney's conditioning or otherwise is a big deal at this stage. He's a project payer. Drafted from outside the ND. They take longer.

We're all impatient for the emergence of the mature Stack but it's gunna take time. Maybe it will be two years from now. Had he been ready to go in 2019 he'd have gone in the ND. We got a bargain because he's immature. Time helps that.

But Sumo couldn't articulate what role he would be best suited for, that's the issue with promoting a 177cm player with an average tank, this is really Stack's best shot at a lengthy AFL career, he can look to Jarman Impey as some sort of role model but he needs to bust a gut from here. That position requires some serious gut running, the best are clocking 15km a match, not sure Stack fully grasps the work required.

Height - 177cm

Smart Speed 20m Sprint – 3.006 sec

Smart Speed Agility – 8.515sec

YoYo IR2 Level – 20.4

2km Time Trial – 7min 0sec

Would love to see how much he's improved on these numbers, that will tell a significant tale.
I would highly doubt if he has actually improved and not regressed tbh

He is a very lay person that does not want to work for it at afl level , Extremely talented but just a lazy kid that is preoccupied with social media and acting like a super star afl player but has not earned it or played to the level consistently.

Unless he pulls a rabbit out of his ass and has a great year will most likely be cut from the list and deservedly so , We have drafted 2 players that are now competing for his position that will work hard for it along with Rioli , Mansell , Short , Baker on the list.

Just a lazy kid

He will be 22 in April and has been at the club since november 2018 so it will be his 4th year

He is a small and not a KPP/Ruck and the smalls dont get alot more than 4 years to prove they are AFL quality , His game when he is on is great but not his work ethic or preparation. The club will not accept another year like this if he comes back in bad condition

I would doubt they keep him if he doesnt pull his finger out

Agree. Also the ongoing commentary about Stacky on this site and where he is and what he has to do is not helpful and likely to make him feel even more isolated should he come to hear of it.
Best left to get on with it and allow the Club to manage his progress as it must in respect of all employees.

So Burge puts it out there publicly and we can't discuss Syd in a chatroom that Syd wouldn't be viewing or giving a crap about anyway.

Stacky is of massive interest and everyone wants him to succeed, (even ME despite the honesty I have to bring to my training reports), because he is a potential star with talent to burn so his progress will continue to be discussed.

Should follow the off season dietary program of Mr Burnside. Dropped 1.5kg by adopting the KFC potato mash and gravy only diet. No original recipe pieces, no burgers, no nuggets or fries. Just potato and gravy. Looks a million bucks.

I care less about Stackman tailing off last in runs,

than I do about the gateway skinny dreads.

If he progresses to cornrows at any stage, im afraid I will be forced to suspend his badge (which, bizarrely, was my only change out of $100 for two margaritas for me and @tigersnake made from the very top shelf, on the QT rooftop following the 2019 premiership)

He didn't tell you that's only his breakfast diet did he?

Stacky needs to learn that you do the hard work in pre-season and you don't come to pre-season totally unfit. OK, he was stuck in gaol for one of them, we can forgive that. We know what happened.

But this is his 4th pre-season. He's a talent, but how many talents go unfulfilled?

i think, just to avoid any angst , Caesar should send his comments on Stack's preseaon training to CC for editing before posting.
i am sure they would then bring a smile to everyone's faces (except perhaps Stiglet's)

What disappoints me is that Syd's fitness levels should be good enough to be playing in the midfield by now. He's a midfielder, he was drafted as midfielder.

Hopefully his fitness levels aren't as bad as they were last pre-season, and a big couple of months gets him fit enough to go into the guts. He'll be a star in the midfield.
