Training For Redemption in 2022

Well, that was an interesting experience, to say the least. Got into the ground to watch the majority of training before
I was kicked out by Tim Livingstone - I think taking notes probably attracted their attention eventually but I did so because my memory is not as good as Ceasar!

Anyway, I shall do my best and I do not think I am giving away any intellectual property since anyone can stand on the wing and see through the fence (though I did manage to get a seat well away from anyone till I was ejected). Also, a reminder that these comments are my opinions only (though I have watched footy for more than 50 years).

Watched the warm-ups and noticed the following in the rehab group Graham, Lambert, Ralphsmith and Judson Clarke. Lynch took no part at all and I did not see Banks or Riewoldt.

Have to say Lambert did his work with the rehab group and then kept doing laps when they finished - he will have miles in his legs.

There were warm-ups followed by sprints and then several games of handball through traffic to goals amongst other drills and then a game which I saw 30 minutes of before I was ejected.

Comments on players during drills:

Aarts was very competitive in all the sprints - did not want anyone to beat him;

Stack looked bulkier in the bum/thighs - was worried it was a fitness issue but he sprinted well and completed training easily;

Martyn is made to look slow in the sprints - can get the ball but I am not sure we can carry too many slow players;

Biggy is tall, well built and very athletic;

Tarrant is exceptionally fit (more later);

Gibcus impressed me - a confident kid who is good below his knees - he isn't skinny but will still bulk up in the next few years. He is one of those rare players with a very good leap that times his jump beautifully and can hang in the air well above other players. He is also a nice kick, both in distance and accuracy. You can tell I was impressed;

Young Brown showed desire but was fumbly at times, missed a few targets and will need some reserve time (based on today);

Balta cruises in training. I couldn't help but compare him to Grimes who goes all out at all times when competing;

Sonsie is a solid kid who has the physique to play early, had clean hands but tired towards the end of training;

I was interested in Hardwick spending some time with just Biggy and Sampson, concentrating on body positioning in one on one marking and when to push off;

If training is an indication Edwards has lost not of his speed / reaction-time and is in for a good season if he can stay fit;

Dow is such a smooth mover - can be quite evasive (more later);

Soldo is a man mountain and was moving well given his injury;

Daniel Rioli has exquisite skills - I do not think he missed a single target;

Cumberland surprised me - I have watched a bit of him but today he had a very nice side-step and showed more than I expected;

Cotch was training as hard as anyone and looked like he was moving well during the session - was very encouraging to the other players;

RCD got caught several times in tackles (Aarts caught him at least three times) - RCD has the ability to handball off by keeping his arms up but he seemed to get caught too often. Personal opinion but I think he needs to lift his intensity - he didn't run hard at times though his disposal to leading targets was superb. He really could go either way - become an elite midfielder or drift out of the game - I honestly am not sure which;

Parker is one of my favourites with his pace and aggression - would be a star if he could kick accurately - unfortunately, he rarely does;

Pickett was fair - missed a few targets but it is pre-season

Grimes was the best for me at training - I do not think he got beaten in a single marking contest during the drills - just fantastic to watch though he didn't play the match itself that I saw;

In terms of the game played, Teams were (and I couldn't get all the players):

Comments on the game:

We focussed on quick movement, a lot of running around the stationary man on the mark or handballing through them. Seemed to be a focus on moving more central after disposing of the ball.

A few comments:

Vlastuin strong, even abused himself when he missed his one target for the session;

Tarrant out-marked poor Ryan with ease, disposal was excellent and his communication outstanding;

Miller surprised me with how good he was in the air and how composed he is under pressure - loved his game and he actually consistently beat Balta when they were playing on each other;

Caddy (who looked fit) and Balta both played forward as did Stack;

Mansell is too brave for his own good, even at training - taking marks when he could have been smashed - tough boy

Nankervis was sure-handed and took some nice marks in defence when dropping back;

Broad actually ran down from defence and kicked a goal;

Dusty played midfield and did as Dusty does - moved well and got a ton of the ball;

M. Rioli was quiet but he is so young and will need time

Dow can step around just about anyone but what I liked today was that he got a lot more of the ball - good signs

Hope that was worth the read - will not be back next week as I could not stand ejection/rejection twice lol

And Tim Livingstone, I don't think I gave away any secrets (that couldn't be seen from outside the fence!)
Dusty so good he played for the Black team and was the starting centre bounce mid for the White team! :ROFLMAO:

Just kidding mate, I can imagine how hard it is to do a write up! Thanks (y)

Thanks for the report sezza, really appreciated.
Perhaps if you used your phone to make notes, Tim might've picked you as a punter looking at his phone.

Just audio record yourself using your phone? Hard to transcribe though.

Huge question marks on CD, if his fitness levels don't improve and if he isn't best 22, I can't see him being around next year.
Mansel is a top kid. Reminds me of Tony Free.
Miller will surprise.
Lambert and Graham need to be training fully in the next couple of weeks otherwise they most likely miss round 1.
Fingers crossed we have at least 1 kids show something this year.
I'm on Mansel & Miller

Richmond didn't just go deep into a few seasons in a row, they went right to October in 2020. 2020 had an impact on everyone. At the highest level sport is close, it doesn't take much to slip a few, or more than a few, places. Physically I reckon we were down last year but mentally they went through the huge effort of winning the flag in a very taxing season, there are costs to doing this.

The break will do them good and hopefully some reflection on the way the game has changed. The game always changes, the teams who don't win the flag are always looking to improve and reach the top. The game develops and staying competitive means improving, even if you won it the previous year. Add to this the rule changes, the constant changing of interpretations, and there will always be work to do on strategies.

I reckon we will at least make the 8 this year, the trick will be to make top 4, and that means forcing another team out. Plenty of decent teams around. Melbourne obviously, Footscray with improved defence (they will be working on this), Brisbane, Port, Geelong, etc - we have to displace someone to get back up to the top 4 and there are plenty of other teams trying to do the same. It is never easy but we have the players and we have some exciting youngsters who have had their development interrupted. The pieces are there, we're a shot at top 4 but it's never easy.

Glad you brought this up mate. As an insider to this sort of thing, do you think we looked tired last year? Certainly how it looked. Does a prolonged series of finals campaigns take its toll, or is it more teams “working us out”, hence looking like we’re constantly chasing tail so to speak?
Without any idea myself it'd have to take a toll, between '17-'20 we played 12 finals, that's 12 more games than say Carlton over the space of 4 years, effectively half a season in just 4 years.

I think you always look tired and slow when you are chasing tail and losing. When you are privvy to GPS data it is always interesting to see comments after a game about how a player or a side is going and see that the data hasn't changed, it's just the perception because of the game result.

Having several deep seasons in a row definitely has an impact though. You're giving a big chunk of sides a lot of ground each pre-season and the advantages of that are huge. Rehab and injury management, generally refreshing the mind and body, having time to implement game style work over the summer, and at what stage of the season you can hit your peak are all big factors.

For example if we are playing Carlton round 1 and we won the flag and they missed the 8, they are likely 4-6 weeks ahead in preparation. There's factors that blur that like list age and training years but you've obviously got to dig deep to match their capacity which is a real physical and mental challenge. Then you might have to do that again 2 or 3 more times in the first 6 weeks until you start to find peak as well. That's a real slog. And then you have to do it again and again and again.

That's part of the reason I'm bullish about this season. I think our guys will feel incredibly refreshed, and they will be entering the season where they want to be, not trying to hold ground as much as they can while they chase down everyone else.
I am assuming the 4-6 weeks is 1 heavy training phase we are losing per year & probably need to go through that while in season too which doesn't help. FWIW i am bullish on this season for the exact same reason.

In terms of the game played, Teams were (and I couldn't get all the players):

Comments on the game:

We focussed on quick movement, a lot of running around the stationary man on the mark or handballing through them. Seemed to be a focus on moving more central after disposing of the ball.

A few comments:

Vlastuin strong, even abused himself when he missed his one target for the session;

Tarrant out-marked poor Ryan with ease, disposal was excellent and his communication outstanding;

Miller surprised me with how good he was in the air and how composed he is under pressure - loved his game and he actually consistently beat Balta when they were playing on each other;

Caddy (who looked fit) and Balta both played forward as did Stack;

Mansell is too brave for his own good, even at training - taking marks when he could have been smashed - tough boy

Nankervis was sure-handed and took some nice marks in defence when dropping back;

Broad actually ran down from defence and kicked a goal;

Dusty played midfield and did as Dusty does - moved well and got a ton of the ball;

Ripping report @sezza it is sobering to be obsolete after 1 report;).
Training has always been closed sessions as in no public entry into the ground, (I have been watching on the street through the fence for 4 years), so you must have snuck in when a gate was temporarily open or had SAS training to break through the perimeter
Not surprised you were ejected but hope Livingstone was polite and explaining in doing so.
Glad to see Daniel back disappointed you didn't get a look at Clarke in drills?
It is rare to get the full squad together at the moment maybe a few more Covid absentees?
