I’m in agreement T-man.
whomsoever put the recruiting/ talent Identification team together deserves some very heartfelt acknowledgment. (3 premierships and counting) They seem to be able to work together seamlessly for one common goal (result). Not ego driven.
It's all just dumb luck apparently

Its not the recruiters fault its the coaching staff and the culture. They can all play, its just that they need to be developed in a great culture.

Yes, a good culture and development is very important.
Defining a game style and recruiting players to suit it has been the key to us reaching the holy grail.

Playing to the strengths of the players we have I think has been significant.

But for the delisted players there is a lot of luck involved. Eggs would get regular games in a lot of teams, but, not only is he trying to get into a premiership side, the position he plays is one we have an excess of players. I reckon a player like Eggs got the development and thrived in the culture but there was just no spot for him in the team.

What can you do?

I'd be fascinated to hear how you explain it then. There's plenty of theories around but none of them stack up under any level of scrutiny.

For example:

This comes up a lot. Our supreme culture and amazing coaching prowess.

Unquestionably huge strengths of ours and yet we just delisted two boys we drafted in 2018 when we were at peak performance and culture.

They literally could not have come into any club in the history of the game and found a better environment.
do you think they would have been delisted if list sizes & TPP stayed the same ? I dont

The Pareto principle. 20% of your effort gets 80% of the reward. So play to your strengths. 80% of the effort gets 20% of the reward. So don't worry about your weaknesses too much. Plus the connection of the players allows them to recognise if your are being forced into a weak area and they will help.

Bump.

Reading that inner Sanctum article was a reminder Frank in his first draft nailed two 300 gamers & triple Premiership players.
Hit it out of the freakin park.

Frank's early picks have what he considers to be freak capabilities. And almost all have freak athletic traits.

When a young tall tests Daniel Rioli quick Frank will like that. If he has Scanlan's skills as well that's a Ben Miller. Frank will always take a Ben Miller. (James Sellar?) If he can get freak athletes he'll take them.

Cripps is a Clarke type. Potato. Maybe the best potato in the game but a potato. Ben Lennon is a Frank type. Freak for glamour skills. Built for the game. Big numbers in big junior games. Legend has it that this selection of Frank's is what got Clarke his new job.

Callum Coleman Jones has no freak qualities. Potato. Ben Griffens can kick the ball 70m and jump over Max Gawn. Tyrone Vickery could jump next to Naitanui as a junior and cover 20m in 2.85. Very different busts.

Ben Ainsworth is totally a Frank. Jack Higgins is a Clarke. Freak v potato.

Corey Ellis was a bust because he had no step and fell over if the pie-boy farted. To this day I see the pick as very not Frank. I think he lost his compass on this one but may have believed that Ellis's skills were freak.

Frank took a glamour HBF just about every year. Nailed none. Fraser Turner is a classic Frank type taken during the Clarke reign. (Sam Banks?) To be fair rookie drafted Jayden Short is a pretty handy HBF.

Historically Frank seems to have struggled with inside mids. Cotchin an exception. Martin can do it on his ear but is too important and that's the end of the story. To be fair Frank almost nailed one with Matt Kennedy in 2016 who still took seven years to mature.

Frank likes freak athleticism, freak capabilities (Jack and Edwards's smarts), and glamour. Inside mids rarely have those.

At this stage it would be fair to say that in terms of inside mids Clarke is no better. But maybe we're better off buying exactly the one we need.

Some great observations Jack. I wonder who Frank would have gone for from 2017 - 2021 with his first picks if he was in charge?

Why did we get rid of him again?
We only got rid of him the once, that was when we swapped him, Whale Roberts and Graham Teasdale + 40k to South Melbourne for John Pitura !!!!

Interesting in the early posts - praise for Geelong’s selection of Parfitt. Doesn’t seem really to have come on.
