Luke Meehan and Conditioning team

On a serious note. ... unless of course you're serious. .... what sort of formal/professional qualifications do these positions usually require?
Or is it like as has transpired at the AFL in that there's people who made coffee and delivered the mail and moved up through the ranks as we AFL members probably contributed to their ongoing education?

Generally a high level qualification in sports science or exercise physiology or the like. The actual qualifications vary quite a lot, Darren Burgess has a PHD in sports science I think, Rob Inness was a Phys Ed teacher who did a Masters in strength and conditioning. Coming from teaching is a pretty common path.

Just ignore if too personal:

Have you applied for the job in the past TBR? From what I can work out you have qualifications that could land you the job.

No, definitely not at Richmond Tommy. This isn't quite my field and I'm unable to work now but I would never work at Richmond. It would be impossible to balance the emotional investment in the result with the clear judgement required to make sound decisions.

Even as a 'neutral' person working at an AFL club, it is very hard not to get caught up in the desire to win the game and you are constantly guarding against it. It was very difficult at times with the Australian Cricket team but the slower nature of the game gives you time to reflect. If Richmond was involved I think my judgement would inevitably suffer and the likelihood of a poor decision in the heat of the moment too high.

It better be Rob Innes. We need him back badly. Need to wait for Swans season to finish to confirm.
The swans are running on top of the ground at the moment and swarming the opposition how we used to a few years ago.

That would be great. You could also give Hardwick advice on matchdays- we know he needs it. And we know you know it all. :D

If I declared myself available to coach I'd assume the club would sack Hardwick on the spot, Rutten/Clarkson style.

I would have won 6 flags with this group, and be in the race for a 7th.

Ross Lyon just said on Footy Classified we are promoting within.

Interesting Ross Lyon just said we are making an internal appointment for this job. Who is 2IC?
Don’t like the sound of that one bit.
Best practices dictates we should search high and low for the best possible candidate. If our internal candidate measures the best against all outsiders, by all means promote within.

I was half expecting an appointment from overseas, DA. It's not out of the question that we have a prodigy within the department.

We already have a prodigy.
He wears #4. Could we have another within the organisation?

My thought on this is that Burge has been with us for over 10 yrs. If his 2IC was a prodigy, he’d probably have been discovered and poached by now. Prodigies aren’t usually kept locked up in dark rooms until required.
I’m worried about lethargy, complacency and convenience.
I want best practices
