Ok, here's my final thoughts on the unlucky 8.

Mitch Szybkowski - I felt he has done everything asked of him, as an academy player he struck me as ultra professional, a two way runner, very consistent & a reasonably well rounded midfield game. Perhaps too one paced? That would be reasoning, reminds me of Luke Bunker a few years back, I also liked him but he was never given the opportunity. I daresay he's one who could easily find a way onto a list. Looking at a similar type in Joshua Browne, I think he needs to go back to the state leagues and prove the naysayers wrong.

Ethan Phillips - Some seriously good intercept numbers, the first player who came to mind was McGovern, what he lacks in pace he makes up for with his anticipation and reading of the play. I think he gets a shot but it won't be this year, prime candidate for the midseason draft.

Jed Hagan - Tenacious warrior type who didn't get recognised, not sure to be honest, I think there was an abundance of similar types and that has seen a few glaring omissions. Thought he'd be good as a rookie at the very least. Perhaps it was the lack of zip, perhaps it was the height, or maybe the combination tipped him out of the equation.

Archie Lovelock - Having so many small forwards in the pool made the road to an AFL list all the more difficult, nothing wrong with his game, I had him ahead of Drury who got drafted, these calls can come down to things so trivial as the go-home factor. I think he's still in the frame, probably needs a 30 goal season to put himself back in contention. He's a much better player than Rowe who got delisted this year.

Sam Gilbey - Probably suffers from a similar fate as the small forwards who missed out, so many flankers to choose from, Luke Teal another very stiff player.

Luke Teal - Same deal as Gilbey, could easily have been picked up and still stands some chance next year if he performs at state level.

Marlin Corbett - Can't do much more than he's done, senior exposure tick, sound kicking technique tick, played well at state level and is AFL fit and ready to roll. Gold Coast would be silly to let him slip through at this stage.
I would like to see Ethan Phillips in our VFL program.

I'm emotional.......not Zips level but close. I love that our club shows a keen interest in the talent being produced over here. Can't have too many sandgropers I reckon. I tips my hat to Sam Cousens and the rest of the recruiting team. A couple of fine young Richmond men from my limited interactions. I'm looking forward to watching them develop at our great club.
Great to hear you're from there, definitely we get a lot of hard nosed players from the West, going back to Balmey, Monteath, Wiley, Rioli some WA talent we've had man :eyes

Archie Lovelock or Luke Teal would be great to get down to the club as a mid season pick

still got the feeling we might be monitoring sydney stack though

It's a sad day. When the draft was introduced it was bringing in 100 new kids.

We struggle to get to 60 nowadays. With many rejects filling spots.

Maybe the class of kids is soo shitt these days, clubs rather give duds like Howe a spot then a new kid.

good wrap Bully, appreciate your sharing your insights with us.

Szybkowski must have dated McLachlans daughter for 1-2 hours or something?

projected top 3 in March, and didn't do much wrong in the meantime. AA

Pace is the only explanation, as it must be on most of these?

Something different went on this year, and I can't put a finger on it.

clearly Speed and Agility became extra-vogue,

but the draft somehow became unprecedentedly predictable; All the top 10 athletes from the combine (20m/agility/2km) got drafted.

without digging into the data, I don't think this normally happens? look at the top 10 athletes from combines past, and there's some unrecognisable names.

Further, I believe 2% of draftees in 2022 didnt attend a state or national combine. Thats a major confluence of recruiter opinion across the competition.

there simply were no smokeys picked.

what's the explanation? a constricting of the talent pathway? a loss of human capital (recruiters) from Covid? a seismic shift in the accepted science of what makes a footballer? some kind of post-covid fear of failure amongst recruiters? an increased risk aversion from clubs with reduced lists and caps?

If this is how drafts go now, the new normal, I'd be suggesting at the Richmond AGM that we save $1m or so a year from the soft cap, dispense with our recruiting department, and simply subscribe to Cal Twomey and Kevin Sheehans podcasts. Or better still, read this bullus hit-led thread for free.

but I only have questions, not answers.

I will watch the development of this draft class (and those who missed the intake) with particular interest,

a bit of a longitudinal study.

my hypothesis is this;

something has shifted in our game, and I think its quite sudden, and quite significant.

Thursfield gone to #lolnorf as their recruiting manager. He must have been getting too much attention for Clarke's liking

You think Clarke made him go there? Not that Will was offered a more senior role with greater pay and took it?
