I'm no Clarke fanboi and have been critical of a number of his selections, especially Higgins. But pretty sure he was on record as arguing for Cripps over Lennon. His haul last year indicates a clear and welcome change of priorities and I think this year is similar in terms of pace and footskills.

I like Elliott but I think he's a bit unathletic for the top league. Szybkowski also limited athletically - another Will Martyn?
Clarke takes Oscar Allen and Sam Taylor over Jack Higgins and CCJ and we’d be calling him the Messiah right now

Shattered for young Sibba but the tribe has spoken unfortunately.

At some stage once the heat goes down I will try and find out what the feedback was from clubs to improve etc...as my Son and him are still good mates.

Whatever it was all teams agreed, so hopefully it's fixable.

Hopefully he will get a call from a club for the SSP. I certainly wouldn't be against Richmond taking him in and seeing how he goes in an AFL pre-season

I'm not so sure your household will be big enough to accommodate Taranto, Hopper & Keeler, I think for the adoption papers to be stamped you will need to empty your nest of one of those players. Failure to do so will mean Keeler stays at the Bully residence until further notice.

I don't think two young KPP was the difference. Midfield is where we lost it the last couple of years.
Who knows?
Everything is sliding doors.
Cause and effect.
We take those key position players and we probably don’t take Gibcus.
So on and so forth.

I would have convinced Soldo to go. Or maybe I wouldn't have. The 2023/24 flags are my priority, so I would have prioritised Hopper over Keeler.

Yeah but then we might have taken Hobbs. Which wouldn't have helped.

Fair enough, I still reckon TMitch would have sufficed, looking at things impartially we've got Hewett & Mitchell on one hand, Hopper & Taranto on the other. The big difference is Keeler would have been one developing tall in the pipeline with a second potentially in next year's draft. The peripheral players in Green & Smith look like decent picks but I'm not overly concerned that will come back to bite, particularly given I went for Cowan. There's some chance one of those guys matches the output of Cowan, maybe even eclipsing his achievements, but there's a mighty queue for that role now & is in part why I liked the flexibility Cowan brings to the table. Perhaps Smith could also play on a wing? That would make things interesting when weighing up the merits of the deal, he does have a lot of attractive qualities. Kind of reminds me of Francis Jackson's last draft, the focus on speed was obvious & it paved the way for 4 years of sustained success. Clarke looking to emulate that I feel.

Yeah but the thing about that is you're wrong.
We shall see, I can't be wrong until the season concludes, I think if Collingwood finishes above us & Mitchell is top 5 B&F then going for the bargain bin was the right call. if Collingwood stumbles & Mitchell becomes a liability then happy to stand corrected. The benefit with this strategy is a clean out can be facilitated as early as next year, having a couple of 7 year deals seems like a millstone in a worst case scenario. I clearly don't want to see that happening but I am well aware a few injuries here and there could put a dampener on things.

Just on our rookies, good picks, happy with those guys, textbook drafting for the bargain bin, I personally would have taken Verrall as well, not sure about Narkle, I think for the mid season draft you allow for a LTI, happens most years.

Wasn't sure where to put this article, so here it is.

Ex-Cat Quinton Narkle in line for a potential AFL chance.

Delisted Geelong midfielder Quinton Narkle is reportedly set to secure a train and trial gig at Richmond across the course of the coming off-season.

Narkle was axed by the Cats just days after the club's premiership win over Sydney, with the Maddington product among five players cut by the Kardinia Park club.

The list call saw an end to the 24-year-old's time in Geelong, which spanned 41 games and five seasons.

Narkle's management has already revealed there has been some level of interest in the fringe midfielder since he departed Geelong, however Narkle was overlooked at this week's National and Rookie drafts after being among close to 900 nominees for the off-season intake.

According to The West Australian, Narkle is set to receive a training invite to join Richmond's AFL program for the coming months.

AFL clubs are able to invite players to join their pre-season plans ahead of and during the Supplemental Selection Period, which is set to run from January next through to March.

The Tigers flipped their midfield this year, with premiership stalwarts Kane Lambert and Shane Edwards announcing their retirement from the game, while the likes of Riley Collier-Dawkins and Will Martyn were not offered new deals.

Richmond acquired GWS pair Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper through the trade period in what was an aggressive double coup for the Tigers.

Narkle could add to the new-look midfield ensemble at Punt Road should he impress across the summer.

Agree, but in the strongest draft year for the last 10 years, he butchered our 1st 2 picks. Just as well we got Balta.

I think as a strategy it's a higher risk approach than using the draft, I think the execution was A grade, the two players targeted were obvious needs and should play an important part next season. I feel we've probably overplayed our hand slightly, 7 year deals for starters, multiplied by two, that might be an issue, it will be 2030 by the time those draw to a close. I think we probably needed one more trade to move into the low 40s, there were 5 key position forwards to choose from, we've backed up last year's 3 flankers with another couple, that tells me some of them will probably end up starved of opportunity & development time. I'm not really detecting any midfielders in flankers clothing either, I think there will be some busts amongst that group. Given we didn't stitch up a tall I'm giving the haul a B grade, part of that grading acknowledges that next year's draft won't be our saviour unless there's a slider in the second round, I don't think you can bank on that.

With all that in mind I'm thinking the best investment we can make is giving Gibcus a good run up forward, I think you could probably mix & match with Balta depending on the opposition, even if he doesn't come across as a purebred centre half forward. There were some glimpses last year, it's worth a shot and you may come up trumps as we've seen with Naughton. Samson still could make it but I think we need more key forwards on the production line.
