Game Day - Tigers v Blues

So Cumbo was the reason the twos lost?

Coz Mansell has given so much more as a forward in his career than Cumbo has........................
if he had played in the seniors according to you we would have won
so he must then be the reason we lost in the 2s

Making declarations after round 1 is the 2nd biggest mistake in footy BB.
The biggest is making declarations after practice matches.
Premierships aren’t won in the middle of March
This ^^^ x 100%.

Was at the game and really did'nt have high expectations from either side tonite tbh, called it a 50/50 game and was pretty much on the money. We are slow season starters in general.

Don't forget 8 x 50 meter penalties killed us in the corresponding game last year.

I reckon if Cumbo, Sonsie or Juddy played last nite we easily win. As it went anyway, we had 20+ more inside 50s than these bozos and really should have killed them off easily and pretty much showed our poor execution/decision making.

Not going to rag on Mansell, Ross or others in the first game of the year. Pointless really.

Having said that, on what we showed tonite, I think we would have been easily beaten by the better sides in the Comp.

I reckon we'll get better, of that I'm sure. OTOH, I'm not sure the Tankers will make the 8 imho.

We'll know where we are at by Rd 8 or so.

A draw, I'll take that.

5 minutes to go I couldn't see how we could avoid a loss.

Yes, a bit of early season rust, but still a hell of a lot to work on.

The defence was ok, not good, just ok. I looked back at the last few games of 2022 and tonight we conceded a score 40% of the time they entered the forward 50, a little less than the last few games of 2022. Not good enough for a side that wants to contend, but not bad enough to get really worried. Some of the same mistakes were happening though. Too often we don't kill the ball. Too often all of our players go for the mark and no-one stays down, this led to a couple of Carlton goals and it makes no sense. Too often out players would not go for the spoil. Balta is a real worry if you ask me. His reading of the play and reading of the drop of the ball is just woeful, seems to lack footy IQ. There is a lot of work to do with Balta, he needs to get better.

The midfield was ok. Tarranto clearly a stand out, Hopper not so noticeable but I figure he will work into the season a bit, was good to have him there. We lost centre clearances 6 to 10 and Carlton just seemed to have more options to get the ball out of the middle. Work in progress but not too bad. We won the stoppage clearances 30 to 22 so that is an improvement. Prestia remains a very important player but having Tarranto there and Hopper hopefully working his way back will be a huge help.

Forward line? Difficult to say in some ways. It was a bit panicky a lot of the time, but the delivery into the forward 50 was atrocious, a complete mess. They would chip it around, allowing the forward line to be clogged up and then couldn't find an option. There seemed to be no system going into forward 50, reflected in the 38% scores from forward 50 entries and the fact we had so many more forward 50 entries and spent most of the night behind. A lot of work to be done there. Lynch was constantly double teamed, to be expected but the way we moved the ball gave the Carlton defence too much opportunity to double team Lynch. Thought Jack was ok, he was trying to provide a second option but the entry into 50 gave him little chance. I recall 1 incident, maybe second quarter, where the kick into 50 was straight to a Carlton defender, in space, 15m out directly in front. FFS, that is just terrible, a kick inside 50 and they pick out an opposition player in masses of space. The best inside 50 entry was Dusty's kick to Lynch on the lead - more of that please. Plus, the forwards need to present more. I reckon Cumberland would have helped, another target, but he will need to learn to defend if he wants to play small forward for Richmond. At least the ball wasn't exiting our forward line so easily, that's a plus, but I still wouldn't pick Mansell ahead of Cumberland.

Could see no point having Ross in the side, he looked well below the level required. I saw a Carlton player just run away from him when he should have had the freshest legs on the ground. Not looking good for Ross, can't see him making it.

Umpiring was the usual mess. They seemed to even it up in the last quarter but for most of the night Carlton seemed to get the rub of the green. We got frees in the last quarter we didn't get in the first 3. The holding the ball rule was a complete mess, massively inconsistent adjudication. Players would get the ball, get tackled and some get away with dropping it and some don't. So many high tackles missed. I still think the AFL's goal of less frees per game is contributing to the inconsistency of umpiring, they seem to pick and choose which free kicks they award. The 4th ump was clearly useless. Miller getting shoved, in the back, out of the pack right in front of goal in the last quarter was so obvious, yet 4 of them couldn't see it. Pathetic as usual.

Oh well, round 1, and a hell of a lot of work to do. Defence needs to tighten up, forwards need to provide more options, but the biggest worry is the delivery into forward 50, well below the standard required for a competitive team. Ball movement needs to be better and may help the forward 50 entries, we need to get it in quicker and with more intent. Against a better team we would have been very exposed.

As for the state of the game, well if that was any indication it is in trouble. Not much fast skilled football. Scores low which is something the AFL claim their rule changes would fix, not that high scores are any indication of quality football, but that is what the AFL apparently changed the rules to encourage. We'll see how other games go but that was not a great game. Our game is better than this, the AFL are doing it no favours.

DS
Nice summation. Nailed it in fact.

I like Balta's stature, but you are correct in saying he has ZERO footy smarts/IQ.

He is 250lbs of dynamite with a 1/4" fuse, you can't teach footy IQ ad as such he will always be limited in that dept.

As for the AFL - the less said the better.

And yes, we ARE way better than what we showed tonite but would have been in trouble vs better sides.

But he didn't take many marks inside fwd 50 and didn't trouble the scoreboard so I'm content with that. McKay is one of the best key forwards in the game and Balta held his own. Didn't notice all this fumbling you mention, at least not more so than our whole team did tonight. I think it's a good start for Noah and he should take some confidence out of the game.
Balta didn’t hold his own. Mackay was given BOG by Buckley. And roundly praised by all. Balta was very average.

Petty of SOS not to be there in the rooms.
Jo Silvagni was.
Jack apparently broke down after for his 100th.
Anyway, watched the final quarter replay.
Nank was massive, sharked the ball from the ruck 3 or 4 times.
Mansell slotted in well, did what was required, excellent mark and superb pass to Lynch.
Watch the replay, Lynch signals and Mansell kicks it precisely to the spot.

They highlighted on the match review.
Balta was outmarked several times by McKay, they had to move Miller onto McKay.
Balta's problem is he doesn't have that quality to lead in from behind, he gets caught out of position, static.

Not a great look that Steve didn't go into the rooms.

Although could it be the fact that he's now an employee of another club and perhaps the best thing was to stay out. Who knows.

Sad either way that a legend of the club doesn't feel welcome.

A leapord mixed with a gazelle
Them gazelle's generally tend to end up as leopard poop when they mix to closely. Prefer to think of Foosh as a Tiger shark n watch for oppo players to end up as shark *smile*.

Just listening to SEN now, is it a coincidence Nonsense commentated Cartoon's goals (all of them?) while the other bloke did ours.

Nonsense Whateley is a terrible commentator. Doesn't have the voice.

My useless observations… Worked super hard, not super smart going inside 50.

Rub of green went with Carlton imho , that happens

Going into the game I thought the dangers were Weitering on Lynch, thought Toms form was very encouraging, -McKay , Balta did ok , I think getting Taz back will only help Balta , -Cripps , played well , however I think we did a better job of quelling his influence, CC , reckon old man Grimes did a pretty good job .

Im still of the belief we need to ad class I.e Clarke, Sonsie in favour of the Mansell types .

Ryan is a must in favour of Miller or Jack

Super high pressure game , probably should have got the points by taking advantage of our forward entries, however not bad form starting the year.

We have only cpm, pleted 17/75 interchanges, hopefully that will see us run out the game well.
The whole purpose of the interchange rotations is to give players, especially the on ballers short recovery spells during the game. Bugger all rotations would indicate we're leaving players on the ground for to long in the first half. If they're already cooked during the second half they'll need much longer rest time to freshen up again or become plodders last qtr.

The leading two goal kickers of last year kicked 4 between them. We kept them to 8 goals for the game. If U told me at the start of the game we would keep Carlton to 8 goals I would have taken it. Bad luck our forwards didn't make them count.
Yep, we leaked goals last year, better defensively across the ground last night just didn't capitalize on forward entries.

Yeah it’s good. Season of Redford 2023 officially starts tonight. AFL, VFL, MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL, EPL, PGA Tour and the golf majors (Augusta soon), F1, tennis majors, Supercars, Storm…good grief. Too much isn’t enough !

Spewing I can’t go tonight. Hip surgery on Tuesday. Can’t catch Covid otherwise they postpone for 8 weeks.

Was really looking forward to a few beers and a chicken schnitzel burger. Geez.
Old fella I played golf with another old timer like yourself last weekend, I think he too was at WW2 , anyway had hip replacement a few months back, was walking the next day and was golfing within a couple of months . LIFT

These round 1 games due to no footy for so long always get over analysed ,

Teams that have a bad loss will get written off , teams that have a good win over hyped

then next week to add to the confusion , lots of the teams will look like they have swapped jumpers .

How high does he kick those snaps. No one ever klicks them that high. He obviously hits the belly of the ball and at the wrong angle. Jack needs to give him a few pointers.
I just don't see the purpose of that kick when directly in front.

13 disposals, 7 turnovers, if that's BOG then I'm gonna play for them next game. Had 10 marks, at 10cm difference and playing more up the ground, Balta was always going to lose in the air. Balta was beaten on the night no doubt but that wasn't ctitical to our failure to win.
