Game Day - Tigers v Blues

For those who gave a spray about Short here are his stats.
Not far behind Dion.
17 kicks, 15 disposals, 2 handballs, 6 marks, etc., etc.
Pretty good night in a team that was far below what we expected.

If Mansell is the new Castagna I want the old Castagna back.

At least George could get the pill.

I think theres little doubt, if you must anoint a successor,

that shai was the new George last night

Old fella I played golf with another old timer like yourself last weekend, I think he too was at WW2 , anyway had hip replacement a few months back, was walking the next day and was golfing within a couple of months . LIFT
I could always play in a cart like you I guess. And use a chipper.

I'm definitely glass half full after last night. We should have won but got 2 points. Last year we got a duck egg.

We were underdone and very scratchy. Disposals, especially into the forward line needs cleaning up.

Taranto was very good. Hopper was only fair (but he's a good player) so there's further improvement there.

We (naturally) lost the free kick count. Gee the maggots refused to pay us quite a few.

Bolton needs a quiet word in his shell-like by Dimma re set shots at goal.

Get Clark in (for Mansell).

I'm definitely glass half full.

Biggest plus for me last night was around the ground stoppage work, last year we ranked close to last i think with an average of 19.9 per game, last night we had 30 to 22 so plus 8 on Carlton who do possess the current Brownlow medalist bull.
**The AFL average for stoppage clearances in 2022 was 24.5 so we are off to a good start.

Players:
DRioli: awesome but will the umpires give him a Brownlow vote  .
Graham: immense tackling pressure that was lacking in his absence in scratch matches.
Lynch: only going to build from here was huge on the night despite a good battle with Weitering and being double and triple teamed.
Grimes: Showed some good signs that he is back.
Marlion: Started on fire I thought and his brutish best, subbed not injured, will get better, (was worth the selection despite his prep), Ross was unable to provide his impact despite being fresh.
Nank: Comprehensively won his, pretty much. solo ruck battle and stopped clean Carlton exits on several occasions.
Tarranto: 32 pos, 545 metres gained, it's why we got him, he is not overly quick and has always been a bit of scrappy kick but they are going our way so love it, no goals last night but they will come.

VFL:

Saw 1st half and last qtr.

Juddy: Best on for Tige's in first half, involved in both Samson's goals one being the initiator off half back the second an intercepted over the top handball quick distribute to Samson for goal.
Samson Ryan: Whilst I expected him to work on his ruck craft he was stationed forward again, looked dangerous above and below his knees and kick 2 goals both from general play, not set shots.

**Both these boys were subbed at half time and sent to the 'G' as emergencies.

Sonsie: Was busy, I missed the 3rd qtr where it is reported he blitzed early, took a sensational against the flight mark in the last.
Cumberland: Took a great mark and goaled from 50 and also spent time midfield, (what did Dimma say one step back 2 step forwards for development), I am sure there was a defensive side as reason for omission, we saw with new set up we had 37 forward turnover entries but to the negative we failed to capitalise, Cumber's would have helped solved the latter but not the former. If we end up with a more rounded Cumber's I'll take it but would have loved him out there last night.

**Oh and the 88,000 crowd and to be one of them, footy's back!:)

Agree on Cumbo.

That last kick i50 is the critical one. Lambert did this well.

I’m not going to watch it again but from being at the ground hopper and mansell were a failure in this area and maybe graham but he is normally ok. Cotchin generally put it to the right spots. Just in general so many kicks when we have the ball without pressure to the defenders’ advantage.

Want it in Prestia Martin d rioli Clark or sonsie’s hands going i50.

The fact Clarkie played well in the VFL makes his omission last night even more bitter to swallow.

At the very least, should have been the sub. Terrible stuff up by Hooch.

Jack Graham is one of the best inside 50 kicks we have, last night he was playing as pressure forward generally, he was constantly tackling would be exiting rebound defenders so I don't think he was ever in a position to deliver inside last night and i am not going to blame him for missing a running shot at goal, usually Mr reliable there too.

Agree Hopper's delivery not great on his first outing but that is all it is, (his first hitout in the yellow and black).

Juddy should 100% have been the sub. Would have given us a spark, instead of nothing.

Good luck with the hip replacement, old timer. The ladies at Del Boca Vista won't know what's hit em.

Player ratings.
*Tarranto.9 wonderful player
*Hopper 6 got better as the game went on, but some woeful kicks.
*Balta 3 got absolutely destroyed by McKay.
*Grimes 6 good but Curnow got him over the back twice.
*BigV 8 top class player
*lynch 9 kept us in the game.
*Miller 2. List filler showed nothing against last night
*Pickett 4 He just looked like he didn't compete a full preseason. He was subbed out because he was knackered.
*Flappers 7 he is our link man was in 2 places at once, pushing all night
*Cotchin 2 Not sure he is a bench player 18 touches but no real impact.
*Ross 1 awful panicking looked injured
*Short 5 does some good things mixed in with some howlers
*Graham 9 best defensive player non stop tackle machine.
*Rioli 10 BOG he is unbelievable
*Bolton 4 got to the ball 100 times but wasn't the usual crisp clean player. That snap cost me a tv.
*Martin 5 was good but couldve been better if the match committee didn't screw him by selecting Mansell (2) who's direct opponent double team either Riewoldt (6) or Martin.
Nakas 9, busted a gut last night, umipres screwed him all night shouldve got at 3 free kicks.
Prestia 6, was brilliant in the 3rd, but Curnow shut him down in the last qtr.
Broad 4 was ok but no of his usual mark and bolt style last night.
Baker 6 was ok but not as dynamic as normal. Cotchin touched the ball more.

Giving up a lead in the dying seconds for the third consecutive match indicates to me at least that the Carlton players haven't learnt much.

Play like that against Geelong next Thursday and it will get ugly.

Thanks Methuselah. Only another scope. Cutting more bone out again. Torn muscle around the hip. Fair bit of rehab. Knee replacement later in the year.

Too much warrior football and partying with the Victoria Secret girls.

How can Balta not bloody know by now that if you start running front on to a stationary player in a marking contest, that it will be a free against? Turn around and face the ball mate !
He is all over the joint.
He takes team mates out when he jumps into packs and at times drops his head.
He is the major cause of the goals we concede over the back. Hipwood in the final he was in no man's land and again last night the Curnow goal.
Our defence currently is Rioli Grimes Baker & Big V.
Tall short and can't rely on them defending the high ball.
We shouldn't be having 5 defenders jumping all in the same pack.
Recruit marking talls
