Opposition discussion

I watch most opposition games each week. And I’m watching the Norf v WCE one for a second time, and I tell you what, the Eagles are the biggest bunch of defensive joggers in the league.

They did this last year and the year before. Next to zero defensive energy when they don’t have it. Ginbey puts half of them to shame.

Simpson better get this sorted out, and quick, otherwise he won’t last 6 weeks.

Reckon the Bears should play in this strip more often. Navy and maroon is the traditional old Gorilla’s colours. Not the royal blue, yellow and red stuff they use so often. Looks even better when they use a white lion and white numbers.

I reckon Buckley walking out on the Lions after one year always followed him & don't think Horne-Francis will have it any different.
It would be chaos if the draft was manipulated by unhappy 1st year players who wanted to go home constantly.
Nope son you made your bed & now you have to sleep in it.

As much as we all love to hate Buckley, memory tells me tho he was a professional in his 1 year at the Bears- trying to be a leader to a rabble. JHF on the other appears to have cracked it early and not given his all. possibly very different characters.

on the issue of early draft wanting to leave- i feel for some of them, drafted to teams that are rubbish and poorly ran, sometimes it will doom the kid to a career of failure through no fault of their own.

Yep, Lids is the perfect example

The ole Beyond Blues. I dunno. Kept hearing from media drones early last year how good a coach Voss was (and from one or two people on PRE as well I might add), top 4, premierships etc …..yet here we are.

If they get their arse handed to them over the next 5 weeks then where to for a side that’s built for the now, must be up against the cap big time, and has a coach that has another year to run on his contract ?

Not to say they still couldn’t recover this, but if not, then what ? The window is only there for so long. Where to if 2023 is another big miss ?

Ninth.

Yes, maybe, by where to from there ?

15th ? :ROFLMAO:

Coach sacking ? Players leaving ? Another Board upheaval ?
I reckon they'll stick with Vossy if they miss finals again as 'learn from Richmond with Dimma in 2016' is the norm nowadays (geez....and they all laughed at us sacking coaches....) and maybe next season will start adding pressure if they miss finals again. It was great hearing their ferals melt on SEN today saying they should've picked up Wossy instead of Vossy.

A serious flag tilt needs a couple of years of September to harden the steel.
Bloos missed a significant chance last year, hopefully again this time round.
The window is ticking

So Cook admitted last night that the Beyond Blues are top heavy and it’s a list management challenge as a result. Reckons they have to go to, or focus on, the Draft for the next couple of years.

They sound like they’re in a similar position to GWS. They’re gonna be dumping players.

Just remains to be seen who and what they’ll get for them. I reckon they’ve got a lot of high priced junk that’s gonna be hard to offload for any value eg Martin (terrible move that), McGovern, etc.

They’re gonna have to hope that their young kids come through. Cowan, Binns and Hollands look ok. Lemmey unproven so far. Motlop ok. Durdin ok. Not sure after that. If De Koening walks, which is a good chance, dunno if they can rely on their current crop to prop them up.

Big issues for these Beyond Blues.

Carlton have provided a list build masterclass on how to do it wrong.

Overpay for flankers and hope they can become mids - Jack Martin, Zach Williams and Adam Saad.
Overpay for second-tier mids who can't become top tier - George Hewitt, Matthew Kennedy & Blake Acres
Bad tall retreads from other clubs- Marchbank, Plowman, McGovern.
Go and get all of these icing-on-the-cake types before you have made finals and built a base.
Bad drafting - Paddy Dow, Lochie O'Brein

The question is, who will be the Brodie Grundy, Tom Mitchell or Adam Treloar? Who will be available for a cheap trade and salary dump?

Tom De Koning is gone, that's one. Reckon Geelong end up with him. Who else? Is Sam Walsh gettable? is Harry McKay? I'm thinking they get so frustrated with Harry that he is a chance to be the one. If Lemmey is showing anything in the 2's (and I haven't head a peep, good or bad) then maybe they think it's time.

Now would, you if your Richmond would you throw next years 2nd to take Harry and his 700k salary? I'd be looking long and hard.

Might not be McKay but it will be someone.

They won’t be dumping McKay. It’s those other over priced, mediocre players that they’ll be looking to dump. But as I say, who’s gonna want them or stump up anything of any value for them ? Doubt if there’ll be much interest. There’s no Grundy, Treloar or Mitchell amongst any of them. Carlton just might have to salary dump them for cheap return, chew it up, and move on.

Of course you would, but you'd be laughed out of the building. Even for a salary dump you'd need to give a first and then some. But he won't be on the table. De Koning if he goes will ease cap pressure, McGovern's deal expires this year, as do those of Marchbank, Plowman, Newman and a few others.

Agree on their poor trading, except Marchbank. Bloke can play, just been cruelled by injuries.
