2024 Draft Thread

Agree. Smillie when Tauru was available caused particular concern. Hope I am wrong.

Looking on, ESS is the obvious bidder for our last pick as we look to relieve them of their future 1st + something else,-one of their several picks in the 30’s.
We could throw in our future 4th and if they want Shanahan bad enough they will agree.

Wouldn’t mind either Boxshell or Davidson with that last pick.
Boxshell. Speedster and reasonable possession numbers. Do like.

A trade back and Ough or Boxshell would be good

I don’t really get the critique about not fixing our issues with speed/runners. This clearly isn’t the draft pool for that, aside from maybe Hotton in the top end who we actually took..? Who else did we pass on that would address the issue? Maybe Bo Allan? Can’t kick. Reid and Berry aren’t particularly quick. I suppose Hannaford or Oliver might have helped but they would’ve been massive reaches at 10/11. Hannaford also has no tank. Alger? Still on the board.

In any case am I alone in thinking we already have a reasonable cohort of developing outside runners amongst our youth? Clarke, Banks, Campbell, Ralphsmith, Smith have great speed and/or running capacity. Then there’s Brown who’s not especially quick but the sort of ball user that makes the game quick. These guys are still fledgling and all have scope to establish themselves over the next few years. Our perceived running issues may already be fixable from within. Then there’s next year’s draft which has a few promising speedsters at the top end (Rodriguez is my early fave).

I’m know I’m an eternal optimist, but IMO some are not seeing the forest for the trees.

Praise Blair, amen

You forgot about the Rioli that stuck around too. He's not slow, and really hoping he gets some midfield time this year.
I'm trusting in what we've done. I was initially surprised how we drafted but looking at it as a whole I'm loving the haul and the theory. Looking forward to what we can conjure up tonight

And smalls can be sourced from anywhere in the draft, they are the easiest to find, just look at FJ's picks in Butler & Castagna, now compare that to the talls typically found in this region. We have recruited scores over the years and they usually wind up being busts.

Individually each player we selected appears to have high upside, however, 4 of the picks collectively present higher injury based on what feedback we’ve gleamed. 12 months from now we’ll either be lambasting our recruitment team or raving about how we’ve smashed it.

All we can do now is sit back with fingers crossed and hope like hell these kids are well and showing good signs

Fair points you make. I'm reasonably happy with what we got but also would have preferred another mid. But we should be able resolve that with the 2 early picks next year.

But I have very little faith in most of the existing young mids/runners on the list. The guys you mention can run but the issue is that, in the main, they can't get the pill. Plus Ralphsmith is a butcher when he does get it.

We need this year's and next year's draftees to go past these guys very quickly. McAuliffe is one already on the list that I believe can develop into a really good mid.

If we decide to use are first pick tonight, what type of player do we go after? A pacy midfielder would be my choice, or a small forward.
I'm a fan of Hugh Boxshall, has elite agility, and ran 6.08 for the 2k time trial in the WA state combine, reckon he'd compliment Lalor and Smillie.

Assuming we use the next pick how many spots are on the list for pre season and Rookie draft?
Got room for either a real late pick in the 80's or 1st pick in the rookie draft if we use our pick 28 to start tonight's draft. Other possible options swing purely on what we decide to do with that pick 28 to start with.

Can see why you’d have little faith in that cohort based on performances to date but gotta keep in mind they’re still very young (except maybe Ralphsmith) and only just approaching physical readiness for AFL. Haven’t exactly had a stellar inside brigade feeding them clean outside ball to this stage of their careers either. I reckon we’ll see substantial growth in Banks and Clarke in particular next year, if they stay healthy. But we’ll see.

Agree and that jumper looks too loose. Love the kid, but I think Jagga will be in the same boat with body size.
Looks like he got an op shop # jumper for Xmas. Plenty of room for him to grow into it over the next 5 or 6 years.

Be interesting to see what sort of offers we get for Pick 28 tomorrow.

You'd think the Bombers would be interested, but we don't have a lot to trade back, so just a straight trade for possible a top 10 pick next year? Not sure
If its the Swans or Geelong, maybe its a F1 plus 41 (Swans) or plus 42 (Geelong). I'd take those offers. Maybe St Kilda, would we take F1 and 51? Probably.

I reckon Brisbane will trade a few picks out of this draft too, not sure who has the list spots, but they still have 5 picks I think, and I doubt they have that many list spots remaining.
Essendon
West Coast and apprantly even Adelaide are looking at pick 28.
We could be singing again tonight

No one should be judging our draft in 12 months time.
The talls will take time, the guys with injury concerns might take time and the 2 mids we drafted both present at types who need a couple of years to really show their potential.
