As much as I hate to give the prick credit, Kennett was three years ahead of Gale.

Shows the vagaries of footy, I reckon at least three of them are very good coaches.
Yep. Poor old coaches are just the rancid meaty bit that is easily disposed of when things get difficult. Been proven over and over again that club management needs to be premium, recruiting, coaching, development, fitness n rehab also need to be at premium together. Then of course there's always that little smidgeon of luck n timing also required to create that near perfect scenario of playing finals and chasing flags.

End of 2016 we were a brain fart away from starting all over again as we'd been doing for well over thirty years. Thank the footy gods someone withstood the bloat n held their wind.

Pains me to say this, but we should be fighting Carlton for top 4. No more excuses with their list.
Agreed.

But culture is key here. And excuses, cutting corners, near enough is good enough, someone else will do it, get paid and who gives a toss after that, have all long been part of the Carlton culture.

A healthy list would be handy too. Get a few injuries and I fear they'll struggle badly.

What, Pagan doesn't rate a mention?? Don't forget there was a Brittain n Barker in there as well. Might as well make the most of the last twenty years of Carltony's cooking odours.
Brittain was arguably the club's big f*** up out of the list.

He was a fine coach with a great football brain. Did an apprenticeship under Parkin and learnt from one of the best, but unfortunately when the drums started beating in 2002 amid an injury-riddled season, he was quickly tipped out by Jack, whose ruthless approach had worked in a bygone era.

Jack goes and gets Pagan and the rest is history.

It didn't help Brittain that he never played at the highest level either, but despite winning the spoon in 2002, the young list had a crack.

It's a shame Brittain never got another go at AFL senior coaching and it's a brutal business.

Can understand Pagan, Malthouse, Bolton and Teague getting the bullet as they'd well lost the players. They all come back to initial bad appointments in the first place through a lack of process.

Ratten falls into the Brittain category - one bad season and he was gone, all to go and get a premiership coach well past his best. History repeated itself.

Barker never got the bullet - he was caretaker in 2015 and threw his hat in the ring for the full-time gig but lost to Bolton.

Agree BB especially re the Micky Malthouse disaster.

He was just pisssy that he got shafted at the Maggots and his ego wouldn't allow him to say no, nor did the $$$

Although watching Malthouse eviscerate the media bin dippers in the after match conferences was must watch TV. :))
